Chapter 14 - claire's voice

Ethan looked wildly around the room.
"Claire?"
No answer.
He held Maisie against his chest.
"Claire!"
The speaker clicked.
Then her voice returned.
"I'm sorry."
Ethan nearly collapsed.
"Where are you?"
Mercer stood perfectly still.
Claire spoke.
"I can't tell you."
"Are you safe?"
A pause.
"For now."
Ethan closed his eyes.
Seventeen months of grief pressed against his chest at once.
"Why didn't you come home?"
Claire's voice broke slightly.
"Because home wasn't safe."
"It is now."
"No."
The answer was immediate.
Ethan looked around the room.
"What do you want me to do?"
"Mercer has to tell you the truth."
Arthur Mercer stepped toward the speaker.
"Claire."
"Don't."
He stopped.
Her voice hardened.
"You don't get to use my name like we're friends."
Mercer looked ashamed.
Ethan asked, "What truth?"
Claire said, "Ask him who authorized the original identity program."
Ethan looked at Mercer.
Mercer said nothing.
"Arthur."
Mercer closed his eyes.
"My father."
Claire answered through the speaker.
"Keep going."
Mercer swallowed.
"Charles Mercer funded the first expansion."
"Keep going."
"He partnered with government contractors."
"Keep going."
Mercer's shoulders dropped.
"And Claire's mother."
Ethan stared.
"What?"
Mercer looked at him.
"Dr. Evelyn Hart helped design the identity protection system."
Claire's voice came quietly.
"My mother built the framework Halcyon later corrupted."
Ethan tried to absorb it.
"Why does that matter now?"
"Because she built a fail safe."
Rebecca stepped forward.
"What kind?"
"A registry no company could alter."
Claire continued.
"Every participant. Every child. Every transfer. Every false identity. Every person who accessed the system."
Daniel whispered, "Evidence."
"Yes."
Ethan asked, "Where is it?"
Claire was silent.
Mercer looked at the floor.
Corinne suddenly understood.
"Maisie."
Ethan pulled his daughter closer.
"No."
Claire immediately said, "Not inside her. Nothing like that."
Ethan exhaled.
"The registry was divided into physical access keys. My mother hid them with families connected to the original program."
Mercer nodded.
"I have one."
Ethan looked at him.
"And you never told anyone?"
"Because possession of a key made people targets."
Claire continued.
"Mercer thought he could dismantle Halcyon quietly."
Corinne said, "And failed."
Mercer accepted that.
"Yes."
Ethan looked toward the speaker.
"What do you need from me?"
Claire's voice softened.
"Take Maisie home."
"I want you home."
"I know."
"Then come with us."
"I can't."
"Why?"
A pause.
"Because someone still has your identity."
Ethan's skin went cold.
Claire continued.
"The forged medical records weren't the worst part."
"What was?"
"Someone has used your name to purchase property, open accounts and authorize transfers."
Daniel frowned.
"That can be reversed."
Claire said, "Not if Ethan Carter committed crimes."
Ethan stared.
"What crimes?"
Silence.
"Claire?"
"Three people connected to the research have been killed."
Ethan's stomach turned.
"And evidence places you near all three."
Corinne whispered, "Oh my God."
Ethan tightened his hold on Maisie.
"I didn't kill anyone."
"I know."
"But someone wants the world to believe you did."
Daniel asked, "Who?"
Claire's answer was simple.
"Adrian Vale."
Ethan looked toward Mercer.
"I thought that was a program."
"It is," Claire said.
"And a name."
Rebecca frowned.
"You said it wasn't one man."
"It wasn't."
Claire's voice became quieter.
"Until someone made it one."
Ethan shook his head.
"I don't understand."
"Someone took control of the entire network. Every false identity. Every protected file. Every compromised officer."
"Who?"
Before Claire could answer, alarms began ringing.
Mercer looked toward the hallway.
"Someone's coming."
Claire's voice sharpened.
"Take Maisie and go."
Ethan moved toward the door.
"No. Tell me where you are."
"I can't."
"Claire."
"I love you."
The speaker went dead.
Ethan stood frozen.
Then Daniel grabbed his shoulder.
"We have to move."
They escaped through a rear service tunnel as vehicles arrived at the front of the facility.
Rebecca led them through the orchard.
No one followed.
Not immediately.
Twenty minutes later, they reached the highway.
Maisie slept in Ethan's arms.
For the first time in seventeen months, Ethan knew Claire was alive.
That alone should have felt like victory.
Instead, it opened a larger wound.
May you like
She was alive.
And still hiding.
