Chapter 5 - The Papers Claire Did Not Remember

Claire spent the night rebuilding the previous month in her mind.

Hospital.

Nausea.

IV fluids.

Michael carrying folders.

Sign here.

Initial here.

Insurance.

Consent.

Release.

She had trusted him.

That was the weapon.

Not strength.

Not threats.

Trust.

At 3:00 a.m., Claire remembered one particular document.

Michael had stood beside her hospital bed.

"This just lets me speak to billing if you're asleep."

Claire had signed.

There had been at least six pages.

She closed her eyes.

What had she given him?

By morning she had a plan.

When Patricia entered, Claire looked weaker than usual.

"I need Michael."

"He's working."

"I need him."

"For what?"

Claire hesitated.

Patricia became interested.

"The papers."

"What papers?"

"The money."

Patricia's face barely changed.

But Claire saw it.

"Michael said I need to sign something."

Patricia sat beside her.

"Do you understand what it's for?"

Claire let tears gather.

"I don't want him angry anymore."

Patricia's posture softened.

Not from compassion.

Victory.

"He's not angry."

"He is."

"Michael is stressed."

Claire looked toward the floor.

"If I sign, will he stop filming me?"

Patricia studied her.

"Probably."

Claire nodded slowly.

"Then I'll sign."

Within forty minutes Michael was home.

He entered the attic carrying the folder.

Too fast.

He had driven back from work immediately.

Claire pretended not to notice.

Michael sat down.

"Mom says you're ready."

Claire nodded.

He pulled out the documents.

Claire's eyes moved over every page.

Power of attorney.

Investment authority.

Property management.

Medical decision authority.

Emergency guardianship nomination for their unborn child.

Claire nearly lost control of her expression.

The final document stated that if Claire became incapacitated after delivery, Michael's mother would serve as temporary guardian.

Patricia stood near the window.

Watching.

Claire touched the pen.

"Can I read?"

Michael's shoulders stiffened.

"Of course."

She deliberately read slowly.

Very slowly.

At page four she said, "Didn't I sign something like this before?"

Silence.

Michael looked at Patricia.

Claire pretended not to see.

"What?"

Michael smiled.

"No."

"At the hospital."

"Those were medical releases."

"Are you sure?"

"Claire."

She blinked.

"I don't remember."

Patricia stepped closer.

"That's exactly why these papers are important."

Claire looked at her.

"Because I don't remember?"

Patricia realized the mistake.

"Because you're overwhelmed."

Claire placed the pen down.

"I want a lawyer."

Michael's face changed.

"You don't need one."

"It's my money."

"It's our family."

"My grandmother left it to me."

"We are married."

"So?"

Patricia said sharply, "Claire."

Claire looked at her.

Patricia's mask slipped for one second.

"Sign the papers."

There it was.

Not concern.

Command.

Claire recoiled intentionally.

Michael immediately noticed how it might look.

"Mom."

Patricia stepped back.

Claire whispered, "I don't want to."

Michael gathered the documents.

"Fine."

He looked toward the camera sitting on the shelf.

It was recording.

Claire had not noticed.

Michael had.

Of course.

His expression softened instantly.

"We'll talk when you're feeling better."

He left.

Patricia followed.

The latch clicked.

Claire waited thirty seconds.

Then she took out the hidden phone.

She messaged Hannah.

THEY BROUGHT GUARDIANSHIP PAPERS.

The response was immediate.

FOR BABY?

YES.

Three dots.

Then:

MY LAWYER IS FILING SOMETHING TODAY.

WHAT?

EMERGENCY PETITION TO GET YOU IN FRONT OF A JUDGE.

Claire's heart jumped.

WHEN?

WE DON'T KNOW.

Michael will fight service.

Claire leaned against the wall.

She had a lawyer now.

A real route out.

Maybe.

Then another message appeared.

THERE IS A PROBLEM.

Claire waited.

THE ATTORNEY CHECKED PUBLIC RECORDS.

Michael had filed something two weeks earlier.

Claire's mouth went dry.

WHAT?

Hannah sent the answer.

A PETITION CLAIMING YOU ARE MENTALLY INCAPACITATED.

Claire stared at the screen.

Michael had already started.

He was not planning what came next.

He had set it in motion.

Hannah continued.

HE USED A DOCTOR'S LETTER.

Claire typed:

MY DOCTOR WOULD NEVER.

The response came.

IT ISN'T FROM YOUR DOCTOR.

Claire felt cold.

WHO?

Hannah sent a name.

DR. WARREN KLINE.

Claire had never heard it before.

Hannah added:

HE CLAIMS HE EXAMINED YOU.

Claire stood so quickly she became dizzy.

She had never met Dr. Warren Kline.

May you like

Someone had signed a medical statement saying Claire was mentally incapable.

And that meant Michael's plan involved at least one more person.
