Chapter 12 - The Channel Goes Silent

Michael's channel disappeared forty-eight hours later.

Not because he deleted it.

Because the platform suspended it after investigators served preservation requests and reports flooded the account.

Hannah refused to show Claire the comments.

Claire insisted.

"Please."

Hannah handed over the tablet.

At first the comments made Claire sick.

People who had spent weeks praising Michael were confused.

Some defended him.

People don't know what happens behind closed doors.

She clearly needed help.

This looks like a family dispute being exploited.

Others began noticing inconsistencies.

Why was the attic door locked from outside?

Why did Michael film everything?

Why had Claire repeatedly tried to tell the camera she was being held?

Old clips were being reexamined frame by frame.

Viewers noticed Patricia blocking the door.

Michael cutting recordings immediately after Claire contradicted him.

A reflection in a mirror showing a lock.

A moment when Claire mouthed something silently toward the camera.

One commenter wrote:

We watched the evidence and believed his narration instead of her face.

Claire put the tablet down.

"Enough."

Hannah took it away.

"Good."

Claire looked out the hospital window.

"What happens now?"

"Michael and Patricia were arrested this morning."

Claire turned.

Hannah had waited to tell her.

"Charges?"

"Several."

The final list would evolve over months, but initially prosecutors alleged unlawful confinement, coercion, fraud-related offenses, evidence manipulation and conspiracy.

Dr. Kline was also under investigation.

Green Hollow's license review began within a week.

Claire expected to feel triumphant.

Instead she felt empty.

Hannah understood.

"Winning doesn't always feel like winning immediately."

Claire looked at her.

"I married him."

"I know."

"I defended him."

"I know."

"I pushed you away."

"I know."

Claire's eyes filled with tears.

Hannah moved closer.

"And you called me when you realized something was wrong."

Claire wiped her face.

"Barely."

"But you did."

That afternoon, an attorney named Julia Mercer came to the hospital.

She represented Claire in the financial and family proceedings.

Julia was direct.

"Michael's power-of-attorney filing is going to be challenged."

"Did I sign it?"

Julia placed a document on the table.

"Yes."

Claire's stomach dropped.

"But not the version he filed."

Claire looked up.

Julia explained.

Claire had signed a limited authorization at the hospital allowing Michael to communicate with insurers and handle specific bills.

Someone had replaced pages.

Her signature page had been attached to a much broader document.

"Forensics should establish that," Julia said.

Claire closed her eyes.

"And the baby?"

"Michael has no automatic right to take custody from you based on forged or fraudulent incapacity evidence."

"He's still the father."

"Yes."

Claire hated hearing it.

Julia continued carefully.

"But given the criminal investigation, his access will be an entirely separate question."

Claire nodded.

"What about Patricia?"

"She has no independent claim."

Relief entered Claire's body for the first time.

Julia then placed another folder down.

"The house."

Claire looked at her.

"What about it?"

"You are on the deed."

"I know."

"Do you want to return there?"

Claire answered immediately.

"No."

"Then we can seek exclusive possession temporarily and later decide whether you want it sold."

Claire thought of the attic.

The staircase.

The office.

The feeding equipment.

The camera lights.

"Sell it."

Julia nodded.

"Okay."

Claire looked at Hannah.

"Everything?"

"What?"

"Furniture. Cameras. Bed. Everything."

Hannah understood.

"Everything."

That night Claire dreamed she was back in the attic.

The door was open.

But she could not walk through it.

When she woke, her hands were shaking.

The hospital room was dark.

Hannah slept in the chair.

Claire reached for water.

Then noticed an envelope beneath the door.

No nurse had brought it.

Her name was written on the front.

Claire.

She pressed the call button.

Security came.

The envelope was opened in front of them.

Inside was one printed photograph.

Michael and Patricia standing in Claire's kitchen three months earlier.

Between them stood Dr. Kline.

Claire turned the photograph over.

One sentence was written on the back.

MICHAEL WAS NOT THE ONE WHO STARTED THIS.
