Chapter 11 - The Story Michael Could Not Edit
Detective Ortiz entered first.
Two officers followed.
"Police! Show me your hands!"
Michael released Claire instantly.
His transformation was astonishing.
One second he was dragging her.
The next he raised his hands.
"Thank God you're here."
Claire stared.
Michael pointed toward her.
"My wife is having a psychiatric crisis."
Patricia nodded urgently.
"She's pregnant. Please be careful."
Claire almost admired them.
Even now.
Even with police inside the house.
They were performing.
Ortiz looked at Claire.
"Claire Bennett?"
"Yes."
"Do you need medical attention?"
Claire opened her mouth.
Michael interrupted.
"She has a feeding disorder and severe delusions."
Ortiz did not look at him.
"I asked Claire."
Claire began crying.
Not hysterically.
Quietly.
The kind of crying that came when terror finally found permission to leave.
"I need a doctor."
Ortiz approached slowly.
"Okay."
"And I need them away from me."
Michael said, "See?"
Ortiz turned.
"Sir, stop talking."
"I am her husband."
"Stop talking."
Michael went silent.
One officer moved between Claire and the staircase.
Another approached Patricia.
Ortiz asked Claire, "Were you being held here against your will?"
"Yes."
"No," Michael said immediately.
Ortiz snapped, "One more interruption and you will be detained."
Michael's face darkened.
Claire pointed upstairs.
"The attic."
Ortiz signaled an officer.
He went up.
Seconds later his voice came through the radio.
"Exterior latch on the door."
Michael said, "For safety."
Ortiz looked toward him.
"Whose safety?"
Michael did not answer.
Claire whispered, "My phone."
Ortiz turned back.
"What phone?"
"Hidden phone. It died."
"Where?"
Claire touched the maternity support band.
The device was still taped beneath it.
She handed it over.
Michael's face changed.
Ortiz saw.
That reaction mattered.
She placed the phone in an evidence bag.
Patricia stepped forward.
"Detective, Claire has been manipulating recordings. She has been mentally unwell for weeks."
Claire looked at her.
Ortiz replied, "We already have some recordings."
Patricia went still.
Michael stared.
Claire closed her eyes.
Hannah had done it.
Ortiz continued.
"We also have a video statement from Claire uploaded tonight."
Michael's face drained of color.
Then a man in a dark coat appeared at the doorway.
ADA Bell.
He looked toward Michael.
"Mr. Bennett, we need to discuss Dr. Warren Kline."
Michael stopped breathing.
Patricia sat down.
Claire watched the entire structure collapse in their faces.
Not legally.
Not yet.
But psychologically.
They had believed the house was sealed.
They had believed the story belonged to them.
Now strangers knew the names.
The documents.
The recordings.
The facility.
The insurance.
Michael said, "I want my lawyer."
Bell nodded.
"That's probably a good idea."
Paramedics arrived.
Claire was placed on a stretcher.
As they carried her toward the front door, she saw Hannah beyond the police line.
Her sister ran forward.
"Hannah."
Claire reached toward her.
Hannah grabbed her hand.
For several seconds neither could speak.
Then Hannah whispered, "I have you."
Claire shook her head.
"No."
Hannah frowned.
Claire looked back toward the house.
Police moving inside.
Michael speaking to an officer.
Patricia sitting silently.
The attic window glowing above them.
Claire said, "We have them."
The hospital found Claire dehydrated and undernourished but stable.
The baby had a strong heartbeat.
No active labor.
No catastrophic injury.
Those simple medical facts felt miraculous.
A nurse removed the feeding tube hours later after a physician determined Claire could safely transition under supervision.
When the tape came away from her face, Claire cried.
Not because it hurt.
Because she had begun to believe it would always be there.
Hannah stayed beside her.
Detective Ortiz visited at noon.
"We executed a full search warrant."
Claire looked at her.
"What did you find?"
Ortiz sat.
"Enough."
Michael's office contained copies of financial transfer documents.
Draft guardianship petitions.
Insurance records.
Video editing timelines.
Messages between Michael and Patricia.
Messages with Dr. Kline.
Claire gripped the blanket.
"What messages?"
Ortiz hesitated.
"Some concern your planned transfer to Green Hollow."
"Transfer?"
"Michael was arranging for you to be admitted involuntarily."
Claire looked toward Hannah.
Ortiz continued.
"There are also messages discussing how your public image would help support the claim that you were unstable."
Claire stared.
"His channel."
"Yes."
"What happens to the videos?"
"We've preserved copies as evidence."
"No."
Ortiz frowned.
Claire sat up.
"I mean the people watching them."
She looked at Hannah.
"They think he's good."
Hannah's jaw tightened.
"They won't for long."
Ortiz said carefully, "Claire, you should avoid making public statements while the investigation is active."
Claire nodded.
She understood.
But something inside her hated that Michael's version still existed online.
Hundreds of thousands of strangers believed he had saved her.
She had escaped the house.
May you like
But she had not escaped his story.
That battle would come next.
