Chapter 9 - The Plan Began Before the Injury

Claire was taken to St. Catherine's Hospital.

Rachel rode with her.

For most of the journey, Claire said nothing.

The paramedic checked her blood pressure.

Rachel monitored the baby.

Everything appeared stable.

Only then did Claire begin shaking.

Not dramatically.

Her hands simply would not stop.

Rachel wrapped a blanket around her shoulders.

"You don't have to explain anything tonight."

Claire looked toward her.

"They started before the ankle."

Rachel's expression changed.

"What do you mean?"

Claire told her about the document.

The officer had shown her only the first page before the ambulance left.

It granted Daniel temporary authority to manage several financial matters.

The signature appeared to be Claire's.

The date was nearly nine weeks old.

"I didn't sign it."

Rachel nodded.

"We'll tell the investigators."

Claire stared out at the passing streetlights.

"My injury was six weeks ago."

She remembered the evening.

The Bennett family had gathered for Margaret's birthday.

Claire had been walking down the basement steps when the old runner shifted under one foot.

She fell hard enough to injure her ankle.

Daniel had been first to reach her.

Vanessa second.

Everyone had called it an accident.

At the hospital, Margaret had insisted Claire move into the family home after discharge.

What if it had not been an accident?

Claire hated herself for even thinking it.

At the house, detectives were thinking the same thing.

A search of Vanessa's phone revealed a message sent to Daniel the morning of Margaret's birthday.

I loosened the lower section. Don't let Mom go down there before Claire.

Daniel had replied.

Make sure nobody notices.

The detective reading it went silent.

They had not planned a severe injury.

Investigators would later determine they intended only to frighten Claire, make her more dependent, and create a reason to bring her into the Bennett home.

But intention did not make it less horrifying.

They had altered the stair runner.

Claire had fallen.

Her ankle had been injured.

And the family's financial trap had closed.

At the hospital the next morning, a detective named Lena Ortiz sat beside Claire's bed.

She spoke carefully.

"Claire, we found communications that suggest your fall may have been deliberately caused."

Claire looked at Rachel.

Rachel stayed silent.

"What communications?"

Detective Ortiz explained.

Claire listened without interrupting.

When the detective finished, Claire turned her face toward the window.

She did not cry.

That surprised her.

Some betrayals were too large for immediate grief.

They arrived first as emptiness.

Daniel had watched her fall.

He had rushed to hold her.

He had ridden in the ambulance.

He had told doctors how terrified he was for the baby.

And he had known.

Maybe not exactly how she would land.

Maybe not exactly how badly she would be hurt.

But he had known the step was unsafe because his sister had made it that way.

Claire finally spoke.

"Was Margaret involved?"

"We're still determining that."

"Richard?"

"Same answer."

"Daniel knew?"

"Based on the messages, yes."

Claire closed her eyes.

Detective Ortiz continued.

"There is more."

Of course there was.

The police found copies of forged medical forms.

Edited screenshots.

Financial records.

A second cell phone registered under Daniel's name.

It had been used to communicate with a private lending broker.

The lender had apparently demanded stronger proof that Claire consented.

That was why the family had become desperate.

"What about my social media?"

"Vanessa admitted she accessed it."

"She admitted that already?"

"She is talking."

Claire opened her eyes.

"Why?"

"Because she believes Daniel will blame her for everything."

Claire almost smiled.

The family had lasted less than twelve hours under pressure.

Detective Ortiz leaned closer.

"I need to ask something difficult. Did Daniel ever physically restrain you before yesterday?"

Claire thought about hands blocking doors.

Crutches removed.

Phone disabled.

Her arm caught.

Her chin grabbed.

"No cuff before yesterday."

"Did he threaten you?"

"Yes."

"Did he ever threaten the pregnancy directly?"

Claire shook her head.

"He used the baby to justify controlling me. He said stress was dangerous. Leaving was dangerous. Calling people was dangerous."

Detective Ortiz wrote.

Then Claire remembered something.

"The medical authorization."

"What about it?"

"There was a fake temporary care plan. It said I might need psychiatric observation after delivery."

Ortiz's eyes sharpened.

"Where?"

"Blue folder. Nursery."

"We have it."

"They were planning to take my baby."

"We believe they were preparing to claim you were medically unable to provide care."

Claire looked at her belly.

A slow movement beneath the blanket.

Her baby.

Safe.

Still hers.

Detective Ortiz closed the notebook.

"Claire, there is one more thing."

Claire almost laughed.

"How can there be one more thing?"

Ortiz placed a photocopy on the table.

A bank transfer.

Fifty thousand dollars had been paid to a company Claire did not recognize.

The transfer memo read consulting.

The recipient belonged to someone Claire knew very well.

Her own family attorney.
