Chapter 7 - The Cuff

Rachel did get inside.

But not that day.

The Bennetts spent the afternoon preparing for something Claire could not yet understand.

Richard carried boxes from his office to the basement.

Vanessa cleaned the kitchen obsessively.

Margaret changed the bedding in the guest room.

Daniel made repeated phone calls in the garage.

At four in the afternoon Claire discovered the reason.

A lender representative was coming Friday evening.

Not to the house.

To a nearby office.

But Daniel wanted Claire present on a video call.

She would confirm the documents.

Confirm the signature.

Confirm that the refinancing was voluntary.

That was why they had not simply forged everything.

The lender required direct verification.

Claire laughed when Daniel explained it.

"I'll tell them the truth."

"No, you won't."

"What are you going to do? Put your hand over my mouth?"

Daniel said nothing.

The laugh disappeared.

Friday morning, he carried a small metal case into the kitchen.

Claire recognized the contents when he opened it.

A padded restraint cuff.

Medical-looking.

Not medical.

Claire stepped backward.

"What is that?"

Margaret stood behind her.

"A temporary solution."

Claire looked from face to face.

Richard avoided her eyes.

Vanessa did not.

Daniel held the cuff.

"You keep trying to leave."

"Because you're holding me here."

"You could fall."

"Don't."

"Your ankle is injured."

"Do not make this about safety."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"We only need tonight."

Claire moved toward the hallway.

Richard blocked it.

She turned toward the back door.

Vanessa stepped in front of that.

Claire looked at Margaret.

"You are all doing this."

Margaret's face remained composed.

"We are protecting the family."

Claire almost whispered.

"I am family."

Margaret answered without hesitation.

"Then act like it."

Daniel came closer.

Claire kicked backward with her uninjured leg.

He grabbed the chair.

Richard caught Claire's arm.

She screamed.

Not because she thought the neighbors would hear.

Because she wanted them to understand she would never make this easy.

The struggle lasted less than a minute.

Claire was pregnant.

Injured.

Outnumbered four to one.

They fastened the padded cuff around the already bandaged ankle and attached the short chain to the heavy table leg.

When it was done, everyone stood breathing hard.

Claire looked down.

Then up at Daniel.

"I will never forgive you."

He flinched.

Margaret did not.

"You'll understand later."

"No."

Claire's voice became quiet.

"You don't get to decide what this becomes later."

Vanessa pulled the tablecloth down.

The chain disappeared.

That was when Claire understood their plan.

The lender would see only a pregnant woman sitting at a family dinner.

A husband beside her.

Parents nearby.

A comfortable home.

Nothing frightening.

Nothing criminal.

Just a signature.

They brought the laptop to the table at six.

Claire refused to speak.

Daniel positioned the camera so only her shoulders and face were visible.

The lender representative appeared onscreen.

"Mrs. Bennett?"

Claire stared at the webcam.

Daniel stood behind it.

Margaret beside him.

Vanessa near the door.

Richard behind Claire.

"Mrs. Bennett, can you hear me?"

Claire took a breath.

"Yes."

Daniel relaxed slightly.

"I have several verification questions before we proceed."

Claire looked directly into the camera.

"My husband has restrained me to this table."

Daniel slammed the laptop shut.

The call ended.

Nobody moved.

Then Margaret slapped the table with both palms.

"You stupid girl."

Daniel yanked the laptop cord free.

Richard swore.

Vanessa began pacing.

Claire leaned back.

For the first time in days, she smiled.

"Now the lender knows."

Daniel turned toward her.

"No. They know the call disconnected."

"I said it clearly."

"You think they care?"

"They're legally required to."

Daniel's expression changed.

He had not considered that.

Richard immediately called the lender.

No answer.

Vanessa checked the email account.

Nothing.

Margaret looked at Claire with pure hatred.

"You have no idea what you've done."

Claire looked down at the chain.

"I think I do."

The doorbell rang.

Everyone froze.

Daniel looked toward Richard.

Richard looked toward Vanessa.

Claire's heart surged.

It could be the police.

The lender.

A neighbor.

Rachel.

Richard moved toward the hallway.

Before he reached it, a voice came through the door.

"Claire? It's Rachel Morgan."

Margaret turned slowly toward Claire.

May you like

Claire met her eyes.

And smiled again.
