Chapter 4 - The Contract Beside the Crib

Claire became agreeable.

It was the hardest performance of her life.

She apologized to Daniel.

She thanked Vanessa for dinner.

She told Richard she understood the company had supported the family for decades.

And when Margaret presented a thick folder after lunch, Claire did not immediately throw it across the room.

Instead, she read.

That unsettled them.

Daniel paced near the fireplace.

"You don't need every page."

"I said I'd consider it."

Margaret gave him a warning look.

"Let her read."

Claire turned pages slowly.

The loan was secured not only by the commercial property from Eleanor's estate but also by Claire's future distributions from a family trust.

The amount requested was eight hundred thousand dollars.

Interest was brutal.

Failure to pay could consume nearly everything Eleanor had left.

But the loan itself was not the worst document.

Halfway through the folder, Claire found a limited power of attorney.

Daniel was named as agent.

It gave him broad authority over the inherited property in the event Claire became medically incapacitated.

She looked up.

"What is this?"

Daniel's pacing stopped.

"A precaution."

"Why is it attached to the loan?"

"The lender needs continuity."

"No lender needs my husband to control all my property if I become incapacitated."

Margaret crossed her legs.

"You are pregnant."

"Pregnancy is not legal incompetence."

"No one said it was."

"Then remove it."

Silence.

Claire flipped another page.

A medical authorization form.

Daniel again.

Authority to communicate with doctors.

Access records.

Make decisions if she could not.

Claire's pulse quickened.

At the bottom was a line for witness certification.

Vanessa Bennett.

Claire looked at Vanessa.

Her sister-in-law stared back.

"You were going to witness this?"

"If you signed it."

"And if I didn't?"

Vanessa shrugged.

"Then we have a bigger problem."

Daniel snapped.

"Vanessa."

"What? We're all thinking it."

Claire closed the folder.

"I need the bathroom."

Margaret frowned.

"You just went."

"Pregnant."

That ended the objection.

Claire used her crutch and moved down the hallway.

She did not go directly to the bathroom.

The nursery was across from it.

The door stood half open.

Inside, a crib had been assembled beneath the window.

Margaret had decorated the room despite Claire repeatedly saying the baby would sleep at Claire and Daniel's home.

Now Claire understood why.

This was not temporary.

They had prepared a room for her child here.

She entered.

On the changing table sat a stack of unopened baby supplies.

Beside them was another folder.

Blue.

The documents downstairs were beige.

Claire heard voices from the living room.

She had perhaps twenty seconds.

She opened the blue folder.

At first she did not understand what she was reading.

Then she saw the title.

TEMPORARY CARE PLAN.

The language described Claire as experiencing unspecified prenatal emotional instability.

Daniel would become primary temporary caregiver after delivery if Claire required hospitalization or psychiatric observation.

Margaret and Richard were listed as approved secondary caregivers.

Claire's hands began to shake.

Attached to the plan were printed messages.

Screenshots.

Messages supposedly written by Claire.

I don't know if I can handle this baby.

Sometimes I think everybody would be better without me.

I barely sleep.

I feel out of control.

Claire had never written any of them.

At the bottom of the stack were screenshots of her conversations with Rachel.

Edited.

Some sentences real.

Others added.

A footstep sounded outside.

Claire shoved everything back.

She barely reached the bathroom before Vanessa appeared.

"You okay?"

Claire shut the door.

"Fine."

Her voice did not sound fine.

She turned on the faucet.

Looked at herself in the mirror.

Seven months pregnant.

An injured ankle.

A family attempting to take control of her property.

A husband building evidence that she was mentally unstable.

And a nursery prepared in a house she had never agreed to raise her child in.

Claire covered her mouth.

She wanted to scream.

Instead, she splashed water onto her face.

When she emerged, Vanessa was still waiting.

Claire smiled.

"I'm ready to finish reading."

Vanessa studied her.

Then smiled back.

That evening, Claire signed one page.

Not the agreement.

A blank piece of notebook paper Margaret had placed beneath the documents to test whether Claire was cooperating.

Claire wrote her signature slowly.

Daniel's shoulders relaxed.

Claire handed the pen back.

"I need one thing before I sign the real documents."

"What?"

"My next prenatal appointment."

Margaret's smile disappeared.

Claire looked at Daniel.

"If I'm going to sign something saying you can make medical decisions, I want Rachel to explain what that actually means."

Daniel and Margaret exchanged a glance.

It lasted one second.

May you like

That was enough.

Claire had found the person they were afraid to let her see.
