Chapter 8 - Dinner for a Prisoner

Margaret recovered first.

"Everyone calm down."

Vanessa stared at her.

"She's not supposed to be here."

"Then we make it normal."

"She knows."

"She suspects."

Daniel crouched beside Claire.

"If you say anything, I swear to God."

Claire met his eyes.

"You already swore you would protect me."

His face tightened.

Richard waited by the hallway.

Margaret began issuing instructions.

"Food on the table. Water. Put the roast out."

Vanessa moved automatically.

"Daniel, hide the chain."

He pulled the tablecloth lower.

"Richard, open the door but keep her in the hallway until we're ready."

The doorbell rang again.

Rachel's voice carried through the wood.

"Claire?"

Margaret leaned into Claire's face.

"Smile."

Claire did not.

Margaret's mouth twisted.

"Smile, bitch. Nobody needs to know what you really are."

Daniel grabbed Claire's chin.

"Open your mouth and you'll regret it."

Claire looked past him toward the hallway.

Richard started for the front door.

And the next fifteen seconds changed every life inside that house.

Claire grabbed Daniel's wrist.

Shoved him into the table.

Threw the water into Margaret's face.

Knocked Vanessa's hand away.

Rachel entered.

The family changed masks.

Rachel asked Claire to come with her alone.

Claire ripped away the tablecloth.

The chain appeared.

"They chained me here."

Then everything accelerated.

Daniel moved toward Rachel.

Richard locked the front door.

Vanessa locked the back.

Margaret positioned herself between the women.

Rachel pressed the concealed alert inside her coat.

Headlights flooded the windows.

Daniel recognized the soft vibration.

He stared toward Rachel's pocket.

"What did you do?"

Those were not part of the four sentences spoken before Rachel entered, but Rachel did not answer him.

Outside, doors opened.

A voice called from the porch.

"Rachel?"

Daniel moved toward the window.

Richard grabbed his arm.

"No."

Another knock.

Louder.

Rachel remained still.

Claire watched her.

Rachel was afraid.

Claire could see it now.

Her midwife had not entered because she believed she could overpower anyone.

She had entered because she knew Claire was trapped.

That distinction mattered.

Margaret whispered, "Tell them everything is fine."

Rachel looked at her.

Margaret smiled.

"We're having a family misunderstanding."

Rachel's gaze moved toward the chain.

Then to Claire's ankle.

Then to Daniel.

The pounding on the door became stronger.

Richard looked at Daniel.

"What do we do?"

Claire had never heard fear in Richard Bennett's voice before.

Daniel pointed toward the back.

"Take her through the garage."

Vanessa rushed toward Rachel.

Claire grabbed a serving bowl and threw it onto the floor.

It shattered.

The noise stopped everyone.

Claire stood as far as the chain allowed.

Pain shot through her injured ankle.

She ignored it.

"Do not touch her."

Daniel spun toward Claire.

His father shouted from the hallway.

The front door shook in its frame.

Rachel backed closer to Claire.

Margaret reached toward the medical bag.

Rachel pulled it away.

Daniel moved again.

Then the glass beside the front door fractured.

Richard stepped backward.

A command sounded from outside.

The deadbolt turned once beneath Richard's hand.

He hesitated.

For years, Richard had ruled his company, his home, and his children through certainty.

Now certainty abandoned him.

He unlocked the door.

Two uniformed officers entered first.

Behind them stood Rachel's supervising nurse and another member of the maternal health team.

Daniel began talking immediately.

"My wife is having an episode."

Claire felt sick.

Even now.

Even with the chain visible.

He was trying the story.

Margaret joined him.

"She's been unstable for several days."

One officer looked down.

At the chain.

Then at Claire.

"Who put that on her?"

Daniel answered too slowly.

"It's for her ankle."

The officer crouched.

"This isn't an orthopedic device."

Claire looked at Rachel.

Rachel moved to her side.

"Claire, are you safe with these people?"

Claire stared at Daniel.

He gave the smallest shake of his head.

A warning.

Even now.

Claire turned back to Rachel.

"No."

One word.

That was enough.

The room transformed.

Officers separated everyone.

Vanessa began crying.

Margaret demanded a lawyer.

Richard tried to explain the lender.

Daniel kept insisting Claire was confused.

Rachel stayed beside Claire while an officer located the cuff key inside Daniel's pocket.

The lock opened.

The metal fell away from Claire's ankle.

For several seconds she simply stared at the empty space around her leg.

Freedom looked strangely ordinary.

No light.

No sound.

Just the absence of metal.

Rachel placed a hand near hers but waited until Claire took it.

Claire did.

As paramedics arrived, an officer asked Daniel to place his hands behind his back.

Daniel looked toward Claire.

"Tell them."

Claire said nothing.

"Claire."

He sounded desperate.

"They're destroying our family."

Claire finally answered.

"No, Daniel."

Her voice did not shake.

"You did that before they arrived."

Then the front hallway filled with police, medical personnel, questions, and the sound of Margaret Bennett shouting that everything had been misunderstood.

Claire thought the nightmare was ending.

She was wrong.

Because while officers searched the house, one of them found the blue folder in the nursery.

And inside that folder was a document Claire had never seen.

A document carrying her signature.

May you like

A document dated two months earlier.

Two months before she had ever injured her ankle.
