Chapter 8 - the box beneath thomas mercer's name)

Raymond Vale survived.
Barely.
Police would not tell David what had happened beyond saying that no gun was involved and the scene was being treated as suspicious.
Ruiz warned him again not to investigate alone.
David listened.
Then he went to Briar Lane with Laura, Evelyn, and two detectives.
Unit 214 smelled like dust, cardboard, and old paper.
Rows of boxes filled metal shelves.
Most were labeled with Thomas Mercer's name.
Tax returns.
Foundation correspondence.
Medical grant records.
Personal photographs.
David searched for Claire's files.
Nothing.
Laura found the locked cabinet she remembered.
Police opened it.
Empty.
David looked around.
"Claire said don't trust the first box."
Evelyn reread the letter.
"Look beneath Dad's things."
David crouched beside the bottom shelf.
Boxes sat directly on a plywood platform.
He knocked on it.
Solid.
Then Laura noticed a narrow gap at the back.
They removed the boxes.
The plywood lifted.
Underneath was a hidden compartment.
Inside were six waterproof document bags.
Claire's handwriting appeared on three.
Thomas's handwriting appeared on two.
The sixth had no label.
David touched Claire's name.
For a second the storage unit disappeared.
He imagined her standing there alone.
Pregnant with fear she had never shared.
Evelyn opened the first bag.
Bank statements.
The second contained copies of checks.
The third held photographs of meetings involving Diana, Raymond, and several people David did not recognize.
Thomas's bags contained handwritten notes.
One line appeared repeatedly.
Diana says R.V. can fix it.
Laura sat on the floor.
"Mom was stealing before Dad died."
Evelyn nodded.
"It appears so."
One detective opened the unlabeled bag.
Inside was a digital voice recorder.
A charging cable.
And a small envelope.
The envelope read:
For David if Claire cannot.
David's hands became numb.
He opened it.
Inside was a memory card.
The detective stopped him before he inserted it into anything.
"We'll copy the data first."
David wanted to argue.
He didn't.
Three hours later, they listened inside the police station.
The recording began with Thomas Mercer's voice.
Weak.
Tired.
"Diana, sit down."
A chair moved.
Then Diana.
"You shouldn't be here."
"It's my house."
"You need rest."
"I need answers."
David closed his eyes.
His father had been dead four years.
Hearing his voice felt like being pulled backward through time.
Thomas continued.
"I know about Easton."
Diana said nothing.
"I know about the reserve accounts."
Still nothing.
"I know Raymond helped you."
Diana finally answered.
"You don't understand the foundation."
"I understand theft."
Laura began crying quietly.
Thomas's breathing was heavy.
"I'm removing you tomorrow."
"You can't."
"I can."
"You'll destroy everything."
"No. I'll save what you haven't already taken."
Diana's voice sharpened.
"You think David will protect this family? David can't even protect himself."
"Leave him out of this."
"And Laura?"
"Leave our children out of it."
Then Raymond's voice.
David opened his eyes.
He had not realized a third person was present.
"Thomas, nobody wants this to become ugly."
Thomas laughed weakly.
"It became ugly when my wife stole from sick children."
The recording ended abruptly.
David looked at Ruiz.
"That was the night before my father died."
Ruiz nodded.
"According to the date."
"What happened the next day?"
"Officially, cardiac arrest."
David stared at the recorder.
"Officially."
Police found more on Claire's memory card.
A spreadsheet tracing years of transfers.
A draft letter to federal investigators.
Photographs of the custodial account opened in Emma's name.
And one video.
Claire sat inside her car.
Her face looked exhausted.
David reached toward the monitor but stopped before touching it.
Claire looked directly into the camera.
"If David sees this, then I didn't get the chance to explain."
He stopped breathing.
"I should have told him sooner, but he loves his mother. I needed proof before I destroyed that relationship."
David lowered his head.
Claire continued.
"Diana knows I've found the account. She denied everything. Raymond came to the house afterward. He told me to stop digging."
Laura whispered, "Oh God."
Claire looked over her shoulder in the video.
Then back.
"I don't think Diana is afraid of prison."
A pause.
"I think she's afraid of someone else."
David looked at Ruiz.
Claire continued.
"Raymond isn't the person in charge."
Every person in the room became still.
"There is another account. I can't identify the owner yet. The transfers go through Easton Property Services, but Easton is only a shell."
Claire leaned closer to the camera.
"If something happens to me, follow Briar Lane. And do not assume Diana is the most dangerous person involved."
The video ended.
David stared at the blank screen.
His mother had chained Emma.
His mother had tried to take custody.
His mother appeared connected to years of stolen funds.
And yet Claire had been afraid of someone above Diana.
Ruiz's phone rang.
He stepped outside.
When he returned, his face was tight.
"What?"
David asked.
May you like
Ruiz looked directly at him.
"Your mother is missing."
