Chapter 14 - the first night with the door locked from inside)

David replaced every lock on the house.

He changed the alarm system.

Added cameras Diana had never seen.

Installed motion lights.

Removed the kennel permanently.

Then he planted a small maple tree where the post had stood.

Emma helped.

She wore yellow rain boots even though the sky was clear.

"Will it get big?"

"Very big."

"Bigger than the house?"

"Maybe not that big."

"Bigger than Grandma?"

David smiled faintly.

"Definitely."

Emma patted the soil with both hands.

"Can we call it Claire?"

David's chest tightened.

"You remember Mommy's name."

"Of course."

He kissed the top of her head.

"Claire is perfect."

Life did not return to normal.

Normal was gone.

Something quieter replaced it.

David reduced his night shifts.

Laura helped with childcare, but only when David asked.

Emma began seeing a child therapist who used toys and pictures instead of frightening questions.

Some nights Emma woke crying.

Some days she refused to go outside if clouds gathered.

David never told her to stop being afraid.

He simply stayed nearby until the fear passed.

Diana remained in custody while investigators followed the foundation money.

Federal authorities became involved.

Several accounts were frozen.

Board members resigned.

Martin Keene refused to identify the Benefactor.

Raymond Vale eventually woke.

He could speak only briefly.

Ruiz questioned him in the hospital.

Raymond confirmed much of what they already knew.

Diana had participated in financial transfers.

Keene had coordinated the false guardianship plan.

Raymond had disabled David's cameras.

But when Ruiz asked who the Benefactor was, Raymond became terrified.

"I never saw a face."

"Then how did you communicate?"

"Keene."

"Who did Keene report to?"

"I don't know."

"Who was the woman at David's house?"

Raymond's heart rate increased.

"I don't know."

"You told Mara that she was alive."

Raymond closed his eyes.

"I was wrong."

"Who was she?"

"I was wrong."

"Was it Claire?"

Raymond ripped the monitoring leads from his chest trying to sit up.

"No."

Doctors ended the interview.

Before Ruiz left, Raymond grabbed his sleeve.

"Tell David the grave is real."

Ruiz leaned closer.

"What does that mean?"

"The grave is real."

"Claire is dead?"

Raymond began crying.

"The grave is real, but the name isn't."

Then his medication pulled him under.

David received the statement that evening.

He sat at Claire's desk.

"The grave is real, but the name isn't."

Laura stood behind him.

"What does that mean?"

"I don't know."

"Maybe Raymond doesn't either."

David opened Claire's old photo albums.

He needed something ordinary.

Wedding photographs.

Emma's birth.

Christmas.

A trip to Maine.

Claire standing beside Evelyn at a charity dinner.

David stopped.

"Laura."

"What?"

"Look."

He pointed at the photograph.

Claire.

Evelyn.

And a third woman standing several feet behind them.

Blonde.

Similar height.

Similar face shape.

Laura leaned closer.

"Is that Mara?"

"No."

"You sure?"

"Yes."

On the back Claire had written names.

David Mercer.

Claire Mercer.

Evelyn Shaw.

Then one name he had never noticed before.

Elena Ward.

David immediately searched the name.

Hundreds of results.

Nothing obvious.

He called Mara.

"Do you know Elena Ward?"

Silence.

"Mara?"

"Where did you hear that name?"

"I found a photograph."

"David, don't search for her."

"Why?"

"Because Claire did."

"Who is she?"

"I can't explain this over the phone."

"Then come here."

"No."

"Mara."

"Listen to me. If Claire wrote Elena Ward on something, destroy it."

David looked at the photograph.

"Why?"

Mara's breathing became uneven.

"Because Elena Ward died twenty six years ago."

David stared at the woman in the photograph.

The charity dinner had taken place six years earlier.

"That's not possible."

"I know."

"Then who's in the picture?"

Mara ended the call.

David immediately tried again.

Her phone was off.

He called Ruiz.

No answer.

Then the doorbell rang.

David looked toward the monitor.

Nobody stood on the porch.

The bell rang again.

Emma called from upstairs.

"Daddy?"

"It's okay."

He checked the side cameras.

Nothing.

Then he noticed an envelope on the mat.

David did not open the door.

He called police.

Ruiz arrived twenty minutes later.

Officers cleared the property.

No one.

Ruiz picked up the envelope with gloves.

Inside was a single photograph.

Claire standing beside the cottage with the green door.

On the back was written:

You were never supposed to find Elena.

Below it was a date.

Three days from now.

And a location.

May you like

Oakridge Cemetery.

Claire's grave.
