Chapter 11 - the woman behind the green door)

The fire alarm was false.
Someone had pulled a station on the floor below.
By the time everyone returned, Diana refused to say another word.
Martin Keene disappeared before police could question him.
His office was empty.
His phone had been turned off.
His car was found at the airport.
No record showed him boarding a commercial flight.
The guardianship petition was formally withdrawn that afternoon.
But child services still had to complete its investigation into David.
Emma remained with Laura.
David hated the delay.
He also understood it.
Evidence could prove Diana's guilt without automatically proving his fitness.
So he answered every question.
Submitted employment records.
Medical history.
Bank statements.
Drug screening.
Home inspection.
References.
Anything Karen requested.
For the first time, David stopped reacting to Diana's plan and began dismantling it piece by piece.
The anonymous photographs were traced to Diana.
The altered audio recording was recovered in full from her laptop.
The daycare employee admitted Diana had pressured her into signing a misleading statement.
David's supervisor provided security records showing David had been at work during two supposed incidents attributed to him.
Every lie began collapsing.
Then the woman from the cottage walked into the police station voluntarily.
Her name was Mara Ellis.
David was not allowed into the first interview.
He waited three hours.
When Ruiz finally called him inside, Mara sat behind the table.
David nearly forgot to breathe.
She did not look exactly like Claire.
Not face to face.
But from a distance, the resemblance was unmistakable.
Same height.
Similar blonde hair.
Same narrow shoulders.
And something else.
Her eyes.
Not the color.
The expression.
David had seen Claire make that expression when solving a difficult problem.
Mara looked at him.
"You must be David."
"How did you know Claire?"
Mara lowered her eyes.
"We worked together."
"Where?"
"Not officially."
"That isn't an answer."
Ruiz gestured for him to sit.
Mara continued.
"Claire hired me to help trace shell companies."
"You were an investigator?"
"Private researcher."
"Why did you use her identity?"
Mara looked ashamed.
"I didn't at first."
"Then when?"
"After she died."
"Why?"
"Because Raymond told me it was the only way to keep certain accounts open while we followed the transfers."
David stared at her.
"You worked with Raymond."
"After Claire died."
"Raymond was helping Diana."
"Raymond was helping himself."
The answer surprised everyone.
Mara leaned back.
"He played both sides."
"Why?"
"Money. Protection. Fear."
"Who was he afraid of?"
Mara looked toward the observation window.
"Same person Diana is afraid of."
"Name."
"I don't know."
David slammed one palm against the table.
"Everybody keeps saying that."
Ruiz gave him a warning look.
Mara didn't flinch.
"I know a title."
"What title?"
"The Benefactor."
David almost laughed.
"That's ridiculous."
"I know."
"Who calls them that?"
"People who move money through the foundation."
"How many people?"
"I don't know."
"Why Claire's identity?"
"Because one of the accounts was opened under her credentials before she died."
David stared.
"Claire opened an account?"
"She opened it as a trap."
Mara reached into her bag slowly.
Ruiz immediately raised a hand.
"What are you reaching for?"
"A flash drive."
He took it himself.
Mara looked at David.
"Claire wanted them to believe she had joined the scheme."
"Why?"
"To see who contacted her."
David's stomach tightened.
"Did someone?"
"Yes."
"Who?"
"Martin Keene."
David sat back.
"Claire knew Keene."
"She recorded their meeting."
"Where is it?"
"On that drive."
Police examined the device before playing anything.
The recording was audio only.
Claire's voice.
Keene's voice.
And a third voice distorted by a speakerphone.
Keene spoke first.
"The Benefactor appreciates cooperation."
Claire answered calmly.
"I haven't agreed to anything."
"You opened the account."
"I opened a door."
The distorted voice spoke.
"You should be careful which doors you open."
David felt his skin crawl.
Claire replied.
"If Diana could trace you, I can."
Silence.
Then the distorted voice laughed.
"Diana has never known who I am."
David looked at Mara.
"Mom never knew?"
Mara shook her head.
"That's what Claire discovered."
The recording continued.
Claire said, "If anything happens to me, the files go out."
The Benefactor answered.
"Then we should hope nothing happens to you."
The audio ended.
David's hands trembled.
"How soon after that did Claire die?"
Mara answered quietly.
"Nine days."
David stood and walked away from the table.
Mara continued.
"David, Claire believed the Benefactor had access to medical records, financial systems, and law enforcement databases."
He turned.
"Why are you telling me this now?"
"Because Raymond contacted me the night Emma was put outside."
"What did he say?"
"He said Diana had lost control."
David looked at Ruiz.
"What else?"
Mara hesitated.
"He said Emma wasn't supposed to stay outside."
Diana had said the same.
"What happened?"
"Raymond told me he arrived at your house around seven."
David's pulse accelerated.
"Emma was already outside?"
Mara nodded.
"He said he found her beside the kennel."
David stared.
"But Mom said she put Emma outside at nine fifty."
"I know."
"Then who put her there first?"
Mara's face tightened.
"Raymond said he brought her inside."
David's confusion deepened.
"So she was outside, then inside, then Diana put her outside again?"
"Apparently."
"Why?"
Mara swallowed.
"Someone was testing the setup."
Nobody spoke.
David felt sick.
His daughter had been used in a rehearsal.
Ruiz leaned forward.
"Who?"
Mara looked at David.
"Raymond said the Benefactor had sent someone to make sure Diana followed the plan."
"Who?"
"He never gave me a name."
"Man or woman?"
"Woman."
David remembered Emma.
The woman who looked like Mommy.
His chest tightened.
"Mara."
"Yes?"
"Was it you?"
Mara's eyes widened.
"No."
"Then who was she?"
Mara looked frightened for the first time.
"I think that's why Raymond was attacked."
"Because he found out?"
She nodded.
"He sent me one message before he disappeared."
"What message?"
Mara reached for her phone.
Ruiz took it.
The message contained only six words.
She is alive. Claire was right.
David stared at the screen.
"Who is she?"
May you like
Mara whispered.
"I don't know."
