Chapter 8 - The Woman Four Blocks Away)

They found Evelyn Mercer in a hotel.

Not a luxurious one.

A quiet residential hotel on East Fifty-Sixth Street where long-term guests could disappear into anonymity.

Claire wanted to contact her first.

Emma refused.

“She is connected to my house, my husband’s company, and money moving in my family.”

“You’re pregnant.”

“I’m pregnant, not incapable.”

“Emma.”

“I’m going.”

Julian wanted to come.

Emma refused that too.

“This started before you were ready to tell me the truth.”

“I told Claire everything.”

“You told Claire what you knew.”

“What’s the difference?”

“We don’t know yet.”

Evelyn opened the hotel door herself.

She was seventy-one.

Silver hair.

Dark eyes.

No jewelry except a narrow gold band on her right hand.

She looked at Emma once and seemed to recognize her.

“You came alone.”

Emma stopped.

“You knew I was coming?”

“I hoped.”

Evelyn stepped aside.

The suite was modest.

Neat.

On the table sat three folders.

Evelyn gestured toward them.

“I assume Claire Benton found the account.”

“You know Claire?”

“I know who protects you.”

Emma remained standing.

“Why?”

“Why what?”

“Why are you watching me?”

Evelyn’s expression softened.

“I’m not.”

“You sold me my apartment.”

“Yes.”

“You control the company my husband thinks belongs to his family.”

“Indirectly.”

“You receive money tied to Julian’s compensation.”

“Correct.”

“And my mother-in-law kept documents about you in a safe.”

Evelyn looked toward the window.

“Eleanor kept many things.”

Emma stepped closer.

“Who are you?”

Evelyn turned back.

“Someone who made a mistake eighteen years ago.”

“What mistake?”

“I trusted Julian’s father.”

Emma waited.

Evelyn sat.

“Richard Vale was not merely my business partner.”

“You were involved?”

“No.”

The answer was immediate.

“He was my client before he became my partner. Brilliant. Charming. Reckless. He understood people but not limits.”

“Did he steal money?”

“Yes.”

Emma felt the answer settle.

“How much?”

“Initially? Four million. Eventually, far more.”

“From investors?”

“From trusts. Estates. Clients who never thought to check.”

Emma sat opposite her.

“And you discovered it.”

“I discovered enough to stop him.”

“Why didn’t you go to the police?”

Evelyn’s face changed.

“Because Eleanor came to me first.”

Emma went still.

“What did she say?”

“That if Richard went to prison, Julian and Sebastian would lose everything. Their home. Their schools. Their future.”

“So you protected him?”

“I protected two boys.”

“And the victims?”

Pain crossed Evelyn’s face.

“I spent the next decade repaying them.”

Emma looked at the folders.

“Using your money?”

“And Richard’s.”

“What happened to him?”

“He died before the final settlement.”

Emma knew Richard Vale had died in a car accident.

At least that was the story.

“Did Eleanor know about the trust?”

“Yes.”

“The company?”

“Yes.”

“Why did she tell Julian he would inherit it?”

“Control.”

The word was quiet.

“Julian believed she was preserving his legacy. As long as he believed that, he obeyed her.”

Emma thought of every dinner.

Every holiday.

Every insult Julian ignored.

Every time Eleanor invoked family.

“Why Sebastian?”

Evelyn’s expression hardened.

“Eleanor has always favored him.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Emma did not believe her.

Evelyn saw that.

“There are things that are not mine to tell.”

“Then whose?”

“Julian’s.”

“He doesn’t know.”

“No.”

Emma stared.

“What exactly does the trust say?”

Evelyn opened the first folder.

“Vale Capital transfers only when certain conditions are satisfied.”

“What conditions?”

“Independent financial competence. No criminal exposure. No active dependence on Eleanor. And proof that the beneficiary understands what Richard did.”

“Beneficiary?”

Evelyn looked at Emma.

“Julian assumes he is the beneficiary.”

“He isn’t?”

“I didn’t say that.”

Emma leaned forward.

“Then say what you mean.”

Evelyn opened the second folder.

Inside was a photograph of Julian at eighteen.

Beside him stood Sebastian, thirteen.

Behind them, Eleanor.

On the back someone had written a date.

Emma looked up.

“What am I supposed to see?”

Evelyn took the photograph.

“Nothing yet.”

Emma’s patience broke.

“You brought me here. You arranged the apartment. You let money move around my husband for twelve years. Stop speaking in riddles.”

Evelyn flinched.

Emma continued.

“I am having a child. I have a mother-in-law who entered my home and stole from my company. I have a husband who may lose everything he thinks defines him. I deserve the truth.”

Evelyn stared at her.

Then she nodded.

“You do.”

She opened the final folder.

Inside was a document bearing Richard Vale’s signature.

Emma read the first paragraph.

Then the second.

Her hand tightened around the paper.

“This can’t be right.”

“It is.”

Emma looked at Evelyn.

According to the document, the penthouse was never intended for Julian.

It was intended for Richard Vale’s first recognized grandchild.

Emma placed a protective hand over her stomach.

“My baby?”

“Possibly.”

“Why possibly?”

May you like

Evelyn’s eyes filled with sadness.

“Because according to Richard’s private records, Julian may already have a child.”
