Chapter 11 - Eleanor Finally Loses Control)

Eleanor sat in the building’s private lounge.

She wore a champagne suit and pearls.

Perfect.

Composed.

Only her hands betrayed her.

They trembled around a cup of untouched tea.

Julian entered first.

Emma followed.

Eleanor’s eyes narrowed.

“I said alone.”

Julian sat opposite her.

“I’m done following instructions.”

The words landed harder than shouting.

Eleanor looked at Emma.

“This is what she wanted.”

Julian did not turn.

“No. This is what you built.”

His mother’s face changed.

“You have no idea what I built.”

“I know about Natalie.”

Silence.

“I know about Maya.”

Eleanor’s eyes closed for one second.

Then she leaned back.

“So she finally broke her agreement.”

“She didn’t contact me. We contacted her.”

Eleanor looked at Emma.

“Of course you did.”

Emma remained calm.

“Why did you pay Natalie?”

“To protect Julian.”

“From his own child?”

“From Richard.”

Julian stared.

“What does Dad have to do with this?”

“Everything.”

Eleanor looked suddenly older.

“Your father knew Evelyn’s trust would eventually control the company. He also knew the first recognized grandchild could activate certain inheritance provisions.”

“Maya.”

“Yes.”

“Why would that be a problem?”

“Because Richard did not want Evelyn controlling anything through his descendants.”

Emma frowned.

“I thought Richard agreed to the trust.”

“He did when he had no alternative.”

Eleanor looked at Julian.

“He was facing criminal exposure. Evelyn gave him a choice. Place the company into a protected structure, repay the victims, or she would turn over everything to federal investigators.”

“So he chose the trust.”

“He chose survival.”

Julian’s voice was quiet.

“And you helped him hide what he did.”

Eleanor’s eyes flashed.

“I kept this family alive.”

“You lied to me for twelve years.”

“I gave you a company.”

“You gave me a title.”

Eleanor stood.

“That title made you who you are.”

Julian stood too.

“No. It made me who you needed me to be.”

Emma watched something shift between them.

A lifetime of obedience cracking in real time.

Eleanor turned to her.

“You’re pleased.”

“No.”

“You should be. You’ve managed what no one else could.”

“What?”

“Convince my son that I’m his enemy.”

Emma’s voice was quiet.

“You did that yourself.”

Eleanor’s face hardened.

Then Julian asked the question that mattered.

“Did you steal Emma’s money?”

Eleanor froze.

Emma watched her carefully.

“What money?”

“Two hundred fifty thousand dollars transferred from Meridian to Sebastian’s company.”

Eleanor recovered.

“No.”

“Your device accessed the account.”

“I handled family expenses.”

“Did you authorize the transfer?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

Eleanor looked away.

Julian saw it.

“Mom.”

She said nothing.

“Who did it?”

Finally she whispered, “Sebastian.”

Julian stared.

Emma’s stomach tightened.

“How?”

Eleanor sat again.

“He used my computer.”

“When?”

“I don’t know.”

“Stop lying.”

“I’m not.”

“Did you know he was building that mansion?”

“Yes.”

“Where did he get the money?”

“Investments.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“Whose?”

Eleanor’s silence answered.

Emma stepped forward.

“How much has Sebastian taken?”

Eleanor looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

“Then why were you accessing Meridian after I froze it?”

“To see what you knew.”

“About Sebastian?”

“Yes.”

Emma believed that part.

“Why protect him?”

Eleanor’s expression shifted.

Not smugness.

Not calculation.

Fear.

“Because Sebastian is in trouble.”

Julian folded his arms.

“He is always in trouble.”

“No.”

Eleanor looked at her older son.

“This is different.”

“How?”

“He borrowed money.”

“From whom?”

“He wouldn’t tell me.”

“How much?”

Eleanor swallowed.

“Four million.”

Julian stared.

Emma felt the air leave the room.

“Four million dollars?”

“He said he could repay it after the property sold.”

“With stolen money?”

“I didn’t know he took Emma’s.”

“But you knew he was moving money through your accounts.”

Eleanor looked away.

Julian’s voice rose.

“You knew.”

“I was trying to fix it.”

“You were covering for him.”

“He is my son.”

“So am I.”

The words stopped her.

Julian’s eyes were wet.

“When do I get protected from you?”

Eleanor’s face broke.

Only for a moment.

Then she whispered, “You already were.”

Julian shook his head.

“No.”

“Yes.”

“From what?”

She looked at Emma.

Then back at him.

“From learning that your father didn’t want you to inherit the company at all.”

Julian stared.

“Why?”

Eleanor’s lips trembled.

“Because you aren’t Richard’s biological son.”

The room went completely silent.

Julian did not move.

Emma felt her heart hammer.

Eleanor closed her eyes.

“I’m sorry.”

Julian stepped backward.

“No.”

“Julian.”

“No.”

“Please.”

“Who?”

Eleanor said nothing.

Julian’s voice broke.

“Who is my father?”

Eleanor looked at Emma as though she wished she were not there.

May you like

Then she answered.

“Evelyn Mercer’s brother.”
