Chapter 5 - The Husband Who Knew More Than He Admitted)

Julian came home at eleven.

He did not kiss Emma.

He did not ask how she felt.

He walked directly into her office.

“What did Claire put in your head?”

Emma remained behind her desk.

“Close the door.”

“I’m not one of your employees.”

“Neither am I.”

His jaw tightened.

Emma pointed to the chair.

“Sit.”

Julian laughed.

“No.”

“Then stand.”

She turned her laptop toward him.

Access records filled the screen.

Julian glanced at them and looked away too quickly.

Emma saw it.

“You attempted to enter Meridian this afternoon.”

“I manage our finances.”

“No, you don’t.”

“I manage mine.”

“Meridian isn’t yours.”

His eyes returned to hers.

“What does that mean?”

“It means exactly what I said.”

Julian placed both hands on her desk.

“What are you hiding?”

Emma almost admired the reversal.

“You want to talk about hiding?”

“I’m not playing games.”

“Neither am I.”

She opened the transfer history.

“Do you recognize these?”

Julian’s face did not change.

But he stopped breathing for one beat.

Emma enlarged the deposits sent to Eleanor.

“Your housing contributions.”

“So?”

“They go to your mother.”

Julian frowned.

“No, they don’t.”

“Every month.”

“That account is mine.”

“It was.”

“What does that mean?”

“The destination changed.”

Julian studied the screen.

Emma watched him carefully.

His confusion looked real.

Then she showed him the transfer to Sebastian’s company.

Two hundred fifty thousand dollars.

Julian stared longer.

“Where did that come from?”

“My company.”

“That’s impossible.”

“I agree.”

“Did you send it?”

“No.”

“Then who did?”

“That’s what I’m asking.”

Julian finally sat.

The anger had gone.

“Emma, I didn’t know.”

She wanted to believe him.

That was the dangerous part.

He looked genuinely shaken.

Emma folded her hands.

“Why were you trying to access Meridian?”

“My mother called me.”

There it was.

“She said the account stopped working?”

“Yes.”

“How did she know?”

Julian rubbed his forehead.

“She told me she helps manage some household things.”

“What things?”

“I don’t know.”

“You gave her my credentials?”

“No.”

“Did you give her access to your computer?”

“Yes.”

“Passwords?”

“Maybe.”

Emma exhaled slowly.

“Julian.”

“She handles paperwork sometimes.”

“You are thirty-six years old.”

“She helped after Dad died.”

“Your father died twelve years ago.”

Julian stood.

“Don’t.”

“Don’t what?”

“Talk about something you don’t understand.”

“Then help me understand.”

His face changed.

Grief.

Then resentment.

Then something deeper.

“My father left a mess.”

“What kind of mess?”

“Business debt. Investors. Lawsuits. Mom handled it.”

“You told me he left a successful company.”

“He did.”

“But Claire says your family doesn’t own Vale Capital.”

Julian froze.

The room became very quiet.

Emma knew she had reached something real.

“Who told you that?”

“Is it true?”

“Who told you?”

“Answer me.”

Julian walked to the window.

For almost a minute he said nothing.

Then he spoke.

“My father put the company into a trust.”

“What trust?”

“I don’t know the details.”

“You run the company.”

“I run operations.”

“Who owns the trust?”

“I told you. I don’t know.”

Emma stared at his back.

“You never asked?”

“I was twenty-four when he died.”

“You’re not twenty-four anymore.”

Julian turned.

“Mom handled it.”

Again.

Mom handled it.

The phrase explained half their marriage.

“Does Sebastian know?”

“I don’t know.”

“Are you giving him money?”

“No.”

“Are you giving your mother money?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

Julian hesitated.

“Enough.”

“How much?”

“She deserves it.”

“Julian.”

“She gave up everything after Dad died.”

“That isn’t a number.”

He slammed his hand against the window frame.

“Why does everything need to become an audit with you?”

“Because someone stole two hundred fifty thousand dollars from me.”

Julian turned slowly.

“You have that much?”

Emma said nothing.

His eyes narrowed.

“How much money do you have?”

There it was.

Not who stole from you.

Not are you safe.

How much money do you have?

Emma felt something inside her settle.

“I’m going to bed.”

He blocked the doorway.

“No. You don’t get to drop this and walk away.”

“Move.”

“Have you been hiding money from me?”

“I said move.”

“We’re married.”

“Yes.”

“So whatever you have affects me.”

Emma looked at him.

“You thought I had nothing five minutes ago.”

“That isn’t the point.”

“It is exactly the point.”

He stepped aside.

Emma walked toward the bedroom.

Julian followed.

“Emma.”

She stopped.

He sounded almost afraid.

“Are you planning to leave me?”

Emma turned.

For a moment she saw the man from Brooklyn.

The one who had eaten cheap pasta with her beneath a broken fan.

She wanted him to say the right thing.

She wanted him to ask whether he had hurt her.

Instead he said, “Because if you are, my lawyers need to know.”

The last fragile piece of sympathy inside her broke.

Emma smiled sadly.

“You should probably call them.”

She walked away.

At 1:12 a.m., Claire received an unexpected email from a former employee of Vale Capital.

The subject line contained only three words.

Ask about Evelyn.

Attached was a photograph taken eighteen years earlier.

It showed Julian’s father standing beside a woman Emma had never seen.

And in the woman’s hand was a deed bearing the same address as Emma’s penthouse.
