THE NIGHT THE FAMILY BROKE / Chapter 15 / 15

Chapter 15 - The Daughter Nobody Knew Existed)

Three weeks after Richard Bennett lost control of his company, Megan finally cooked spaghetti again.

Not because she wanted to.

Because Sophie pointed to the box in the grocery store and said,

"Pasta."

Megan stood frozen in the aisle.

Daniel watched Sophie.

"Are you sure?"

Sophie nodded.

At home Megan made a small bowl.

She placed it on the table.

Sophie looked at it.

For one moment fear returned to her eyes.

Then Daniel sat beside her.

Megan sat on the other side.

Nobody told her to eat.

Nobody raised a voice.

Nobody touched the bowl.

Sophie picked up one noodle with her fingers.

She put it in her mouth.

Then smiled.

Daniel looked away.

Megan saw tears in his eyes.

That was the victory no court order could measure.

Their daughter was learning that a dinner table could be safe.

Richard and Evelyn were under restraining orders.

Richard faced investigations involving fraudulent records, unlawful confinement, financial misconduct, witness intimidation, and possible involvement in Anna's disappearance.

Evelyn had begun cooperating.

Partially.

Her attorneys claimed she had lived under Richard's control for decades.

Megan did not know how much she believed.

Evelyn had lied.

Evelyn had hurt Sophie.

Fear might explain cruelty.

It did not erase it.

Daniel had not visited either parent.

He received letters from his mother.

He never opened them.

Not yet.

Bennett Industries continued without him.

Natalie said Daniel could eventually pursue independent voting rights and help restore Lucas's inheritance.

Daniel told her the company could wait.

Finding Lucas could not.

The photograph marked FOUND ELISE became their only lead.

Experts analyzed the background.

A motel sign.

A mountain ridge.

A gas station logo reflected in a car window.

They narrowed the location to northern Colorado.

Daniel wanted to leave immediately.

Natalie stopped him.

"Victor wants you moving."

"Maybe."

"Then ask why."

Megan agreed.

Victor had survived thirteen years by remaining hidden.

If he wanted Daniel to find him now, it was because Daniel possessed something Victor needed.

Anna's recording had said the proof was hidden with Daniel.

They searched everything he owned.

Childhood boxes.

School records.

Old furniture.

Books.

Photographs.

Nothing.

Then Megan remembered Sophie's brass key.

The key to Anna's room.

Where had Sophie found it?

Evelyn claimed the key had been inside her downstairs desk.

But Sophie could not reach that desk.

Someone had given it to her.

Maybe the mysterious woman Megan thought she saw outside the house.

Maybe Elise.

Maybe someone else.

Daniel returned to the Bennett house one final time under police supervision.

Anna's room remained open.

Most items had been catalogued.

Megan brought Sophie only as far as the driveway and stayed in the car.

Daniel searched the closet.

Desk.

Books.

Then he noticed the framed photograph of Anna.

The one beside the window.

He removed the backing.

Inside was another photograph.

Daniel and Anna as children.

Behind it, taped to the frame, was a tiny storage card.

Natalie examined it on a secure computer.

One video.

The date was two weeks before Samuel Bennett died.

The camera showed Samuel sitting in his study.

He looked ill.

Anna sat across from him.

Samuel spoke quietly.

"Your father thinks control belongs to whoever is ruthless enough to keep it."

Anna said, "Then change the trust."

"I did."

"Richard will challenge it."

"Only if he finds it."

"Victor knows?"

Samuel's expression darkened.

"Victor knows too much."

Anna leaned forward.

"What about Rebecca's baby?"

Samuel looked directly toward the camera.

For a moment Megan felt as if the dead man were looking through time.

"That child is the key."

"Why?"

"Because Richard and Victor both believe the child can destroy the other."

"Which one is her father?"

Samuel smiled sadly.

"Neither."

Daniel stopped the video.

"What?"

Megan stared.

Natalie rewound it.

Samuel clearly said neither.

The video continued.

Anna looked shocked.

"Then how is Elise your granddaughter?"

Samuel answered,

"Because Richard and Victor aren't the only sons I had."

The room fell silent.

Daniel whispered, "Another son."

Anna asked the question they all wanted answered.

"Who?"

Samuel looked toward the door.

Someone had entered off camera.

His face changed.

The video shook.

Then cut to black.

Metadata showed another file had once existed on the storage card.

Deleted.

Experts recovered fragments.

A man's voice.

Samuel saying a name.

But the name itself was corrupted.

Natalie brought more news the next morning.

Richard had requested a private meeting with Daniel in exchange for information about Lucas.

Daniel refused at first.

Then Natalie delivered Richard's message exactly.

Tell Daniel that Victor is not his uncle.

Daniel agreed to meet.

The meeting took place through glass at a secure detention interview room after Richard was taken into custody on a new evidence-tampering charge.

For the first time Daniel saw his father without a perfect suit.

Without an office.

Without assistants.

Without the house.

Richard looked older.

Smaller.

But his eyes remained sharp.

Daniel sat.

"You wanted me here."

Richard leaned toward the glass.

"Victor has Lucas."

"I know."

"Then you're already behind."

"Who is Elise's father?"

Richard smiled.

"Still asking the wrong question."

"Who is Victor?"

Richard studied him.

"Did Samuel leave you the recording?"

Daniel's expression gave away enough.

Richard laughed softly.

"Of course he did."

"Who is the third son?"

Richard's amusement disappeared.

"You think this ends with me?"

"I think a lot begins when you're finally unable to control it."

Richard looked almost proud.

"That sounds like Anna."

Daniel stood.

"I'm done."

"Lucas will die if you walk out."

Daniel stopped.

Richard continued.

"Victor isn't trying to find Elise."

"He already found her."

"No."

Daniel turned.

Richard leaned closer to the glass.

"He found the woman who believes she is Elise."

Daniel sat again.

"What does that mean?"

"It means Samuel protected the real child better than any of us understood."

"Where is she?"

Richard smiled.

"You've been living with the answer."

Daniel stared at him.

Richard lifted one finger.

"Ask Megan where Sophie got the key."

Daniel's face changed.

"Don't bring my daughter into this."

"I didn't."

Richard's voice became quiet.

"Someone else did."

Daniel left without another word.

He called Megan from the parking lot.

She answered immediately.

"Are you okay?"

"Where's Sophie?"

"With me."

"Go inside. Lock the doors."

"Daniel, what happened?"

"Just do it."

Megan carried Sophie inside the nearly finished house.

The security system activated.

Daniel drove toward them.

Megan checked every room.

Nothing.

She returned to the kitchen.

Sophie stood beside the round dining table holding her stuffed rabbit.

"Mama."

"I'm here."

Sophie pointed toward the window.

"Lady."

Megan's breath stopped.

A figure stood near the trees beyond the yard.

The same young blond woman.

This time she did not disappear.

She began walking toward the house.

Megan grabbed her phone.

"Daniel."

"I'm two minutes away."

"She's here."

"Who?"

"The woman."

Sophie pressed her hands against the glass.

The woman stopped twenty feet away.

She looked frightened.

Not threatening.

Then she lifted both hands.

One hand held a photograph.

The other held a brass key identical to the one Sophie had found.

Megan did not open the door.

"Who are you?" she shouted through the glass.

The woman looked toward Sophie.

Tears filled her eyes.

"My name is Elise."

Megan's heart pounded.

Daniel's car appeared at the end of the street.

The woman stepped closer.

"I don't have much time."

"What do you want?"

"Lucas sent me."

"Where is he?"

Elise looked behind her.

"Victor has him."

"Why?"

"Because Lucas found out who the third Bennett son is."

Daniel jumped from his car and ran toward the house.

Elise saw him.

Her face changed.

Not with recognition.

With terror.

She backed away.

Daniel stopped.

"Elise?"

She shook her head.

"You don't understand."

"Tell me."

She looked again at Sophie.

Then at Megan.

"Anna didn't hide the proof with Daniel."

Megan gripped the edge of the table.

"What did she hide?"

Elise raised the photograph.

It showed Anna many years earlier holding a newborn baby.

Beside her stood a man whose face had been torn from the picture.

On the back Anna had written a single sentence.

The last Bennett heir must never know who her father is.

Megan stared.

"Whose baby is that?"

Elise looked directly at her.

Before she could answer, a black SUV turned onto the street.

Elise's face went white.

"They found me."

Daniel ran toward her.

"Come inside."

Elise stepped back.

"No. If I come inside, they know where she is."

"Where who is?"

Elise looked through the window at Sophie.

For one impossible second, nobody moved.

Then she whispered,

"The child Anna died protecting."

The SUV accelerated toward them.

Daniel shouted.

Megan grabbed Sophie.

Elise ran.

And as the black vehicle raced past the house and disappeared after her, Megan looked down at her daughter and saw something she had never noticed before.

Around Sophie's neck, hidden beneath the collar of her pink shirt, hung a tiny silver pendant.

Megan had never put it there.

She opened it with shaking fingers.

Inside was a faded photograph of Anna Bennett.

And on the other side were four engraved words.

FOR MY LITTLE ELISE.

Megan stopped breathing.

Outside, Daniel stared at the empty road.

Somewhere beyond the trees, tires screamed against pavement.

Then came a sound like a crash.

Daniel ran toward it.

Megan stood frozen with Sophie in her arms, staring at the pendant.

Because suddenly the mystery was no longer about a dead sister.

Or a missing nephew.

Or a hidden heir.

May you like

It was about her daughter.

And somewhere in the distance, a phone began to ring.
