Chapter 12 - The Dinner That Changed Everything)
The police took the bowl.
They took fingerprints.
They took security footage.
The camera had gone black for nine minutes.
The alarm system showed no door opening.
Someone had either possessed the code or entered before Daniel and Megan returned.
Natalie advised immediate relocation again.
Daniel made another decision instead.
"I'm resigning."
Megan looked at him.
"Permanently?"
"Yes."
"What about the company?"
"I don't care."
"You do."
"Not more than this."
He looked toward Sophie sleeping in Megan's arms.
"Never more than this."
Daniel submitted his resignation at 8:03 the next morning.
At 8:17 Richard called.
Daniel did not answer.
At 8:21 Evelyn called.
At 8:30 the chairman of the board called.
At 8:42 Natalie received notice that Bennett Industries intended to challenge Daniel's resignation based on alleged mental incapacity.
At 9:05 a petition was filed requesting emergency review of Sophie's welfare.
Megan stared at the legal document.
"They're trying to take her."
Natalie remained calm.
"They are trying to scare you."
"The complaint says we're unstable, moving between hotels, exposing her to danger."
"All of which occurred after threats connected to Richard."
"It says I assaulted Evelyn."
Natalie looked up.
"Did you?"
Megan thought of the future.
The kitchen.
The slap.
The fall.
Not yet.
At that point, the dinner confrontation had not happened.
"No."
Natalie nodded.
"Then this appears to include an allegation about an event that has not occurred."
Silence.
Daniel took the paper.
The filing described an incident in which Megan allegedly attacked Evelyn during a meal after Evelyn tried to correct Sophie's behavior.
Megan felt cold.
"This is dated tomorrow."
Natalie looked again.
A clerical error, perhaps.
Except it described spaghetti.
A white bowl.
A confrontation.
Details too specific to be random.
Daniel whispered, "They're planning it."
Natalie's eyes narrowed.
"Or someone gave you a draft they intended to file after provoking an incident."
Megan stood.
"We're not going back there."
"No," Daniel said.
Then his phone rang.
Evelyn.
This time he answered.
She was crying.
Real crying.
At least it sounded real.
"Daniel, your father collapsed."
Daniel stood.
"What?"
"His chest. The ambulance came. He refused the hospital."
"Why would he refuse?"
"You know him."
Daniel closed his eyes.
"Mom."
"Please come home. He keeps asking for you."
Megan shook her head.
Daniel saw.
He told Evelyn, "Call a doctor."
"I did."
"Then listen to the doctor."
"Daniel, please."
The line went silent.
Then Evelyn whispered,
"He says if you don't come tonight, he'll destroy everything Anna left."
Daniel's eyes opened.
"What does he have?"
"I don't know."
"Mom."
"I don't know."
"Is this another trap?"
Evelyn began crying harder.
"I can't do this anymore."
The line disconnected.
Natalie advised against going.
Megan agreed.
Daniel stared at Anna's letter.
"If Richard has original evidence, he can burn it tonight."
"Then police get a warrant."
"Based on what?"
"Threats."
"Mostly anonymous."
Megan knew he had already decided.
"If we go, we bring recording devices."
Natalie stared at her.
"Megan."
"We bring Rachel for Sophie."
Daniel shook his head.
"No. Sophie doesn't enter that house."
But Evelyn called again.
This time she said she would only show Daniel the documents if the whole family came.
"She wants the scene in the petition," Megan said.
Daniel understood.
A crying child.
Dinner.
Provocation.
Megan attacking Evelyn.
Then Richard could claim they had predicted unstable behavior.
They should have stayed away.
They knew it.
Yet they also knew that walking away might destroy the best chance of recovering Anna's original records.
So they built their own trap.
Natalie arranged hidden audio recording through Daniel's phone.
A private investigator waited two streets away.
Rachel remained on standby.
Megan insisted on keeping Sophie with her because she no longer trusted anyone connected to the Bennett family.
They arrived shortly before six.
The kitchen table had been set.
Spaghetti.
Milk.
White bowl.
Exactly like the draft complaint.
Megan looked at Daniel.
He saw it too.
Evelyn smiled.
"Sophie must be hungry."
Megan whispered, "We're leaving."
Then Richard entered.
He looked perfectly healthy.
Daniel's expression changed.
"No heart problem?"
Richard closed the door.
"We needed you here."
Daniel turned to his mother.
"You lied."
Evelyn looked ashamed.
Richard did not.
"Sit down."
"Where are Anna's documents?"
"Sit."
Daniel remained standing.
Richard pointed toward Sophie.
"The child should eat."
Megan held her closer.
"No."
Richard smiled.
"Then perhaps we have nothing to discuss."
For forty minutes they argued.
Richard admitted nothing.
Evelyn served dinner.
Sophie eventually became restless.
Megan placed her in the high chair only because she stood directly beside her.
Daniel remained across the table.
His phone recorded everything.
Then Daniel received a message from Natalie.
LEAVE NOW. SOMEONE FILED THE PETITION.
Daniel stood.
"We're done."
Richard blocked the hallway.
Evelyn lifted Sophie's bowl.
Everything happened exactly as the mysterious draft had predicted.
But not because Megan lost control.
Because Evelyn made it happen.
She leaned over the little girl.
"Eat."
Sophie cried.
"Evelyn, stop," Megan said.
The older woman's expression changed.
She slammed the bowl onto the table.
Spaghetti spilled everywhere.
"Eat, eat, eat! That's all you ever do! You're useless!"
Megan moved instantly.
She grabbed Evelyn's wrist.
"Why do you always give her such a hard time?"
Evelyn shoved her.
Megan slapped her.
Evelyn stumbled against the chair and fell.
Megan lifted Sophie.
Richard stormed forward.
He struck Megan across the face.
"Both of you. Get out of my house right now."
The front door opened behind them.
Not because Daniel was arriving.
He was already there.
Because Natalie Cross entered with two police officers and the private investigator.
Richard went pale.
Daniel stepped between his father and Megan.
He wrapped his arms around his wife and daughter.
"If you kick them out, I'm leaving too."
Richard stared.
"You would walk away from your own family for her?"
Daniel looked directly into his father's eyes.
"From now on, my wife and daughter are my family."
The recording captured every word.
The police officers had witnessed Richard strike Megan.
The private investigator had recorded Evelyn overturning the bowl through the French window.

And the petition filed hours earlier described events before they happened.
For the first time in decades, Richard Bennett had built a trap that closed around himself.
