THE NIGHT THE FAMILY BROKE / Chapter 13 / 15

Chapter 13 - The Room Beneath the Kitchen)

Richard was arrested for assault that night.

He was released pending charges the next morning.

Evelyn was not arrested, but the child welfare petition collapsed almost immediately.

Natalie submitted the pre-filed allegations, timestamps, recordings, and witness statements.

The judge dismissed the emergency request and referred the circumstances to investigators.

For Megan, that was the first satisfying breath she had taken in weeks.

Sophie was safe.

Daniel had chosen them publicly.

Richard could no longer pretend the family remained united.

But Anna's documents were still missing.

During the confrontation, Megan had noticed something.

When Daniel mentioned Anna's records, Evelyn looked toward the floor.

Not the hallway.

Not Richard.

The floor.

Specifically, beneath the kitchen pantry.

The next day police executed a limited search warrant related to threats, potential evidence tampering, and the suspicious welfare filing.

Natalie persuaded investigators to include storage areas where documents might be kept.

Behind the pantry shelving they found a floor hatch.

Richard claimed it accessed old plumbing.

It did.

And something else.

A narrow room beneath the kitchen.

Metal filing cabinets lined the walls.

One contained family financial records.

One contained documents relating to Cedar Ridge.

A third was locked.

Police opened it.

Inside were files marked with names.

ANNA BENNETT.

LUCAS.

VICTOR.

REBECCA KEENE.

And DANIEL.

Megan watched body-camera footage later from Natalie's office.

Daniel's file contained medical evaluations he had never undergone.

Draft reports describing substance dependence.

Psychological instability.

Aggression.

Financial recklessness.

All unsigned.

All ready to be completed.

Megan whispered, "They were preparing to do to you what they did to Anna."

Daniel said nothing.

Sophie's file was worse.

School recommendations for institutions she had never attended.

Pediatric concerns from doctors she had never seen.

Photographs taken without Megan's knowledge.

Notes documenting Megan's alleged emotional instability.

Richard had not simply reacted to their departure.

He had planned for it.

Natalie turned the screen off.

"We now have enough to seek restraining orders."

"Do it," Megan said.

Daniel nodded.

"What about Lucas's file?"

Natalie opened a scanned copy.

It contained years of surveillance.

Schools.

Foster records.

Laura's address.

Photographs of Lucas from age six onward.

Daniel stared.

"Richard knew where he was."

"Apparently."

"He could have taken him."

"Maybe he didn't need to."

Megan frowned.

"What does that mean?"

Natalie showed them a recurring payment.

A private security company had been paid to monitor Lucas but specifically instructed not to approach.

"Why watch him?"

Daniel asked.

"To know where the beneficiary was."

"Until when?"

Natalie scrolled.

"Until his eighteenth birthday."

Lucas was sixteen.

Two years.

"What happens at eighteen?" Megan asked.

Natalie opened the trust.

A descendant beneficiary whose parent died before age twenty-five would gain direct standing at eighteen.

Lucas could challenge Richard's control himself.

Daniel whispered, "That's why everything is happening now."

"Possibly."

"What about Rebecca?"

Her file contained fewer documents.

A birth record.

Rebecca Anne Keene.

A note reading: child delivered privately.

The baby's name was missing.

Then a DNA report.

Daniel looked at Natalie.

"Whose DNA?"

She read.

"Samuel Bennett."

Daniel frowned.

"My grandfather?"

"The report identifies a 99.8 percent probability of grandparent relationship."

Megan understood slowly.

Rebecca's baby was Samuel Bennett's grandchild.

But if Richard and Victor were Samuel's only known sons, one of them was the father.

Daniel stared at the old photograph.

Victor, Anna, Rebecca, baby E.

"Victor."

"Maybe," Natalie said.

"Or Richard."

Silence.

Daniel looked sick.

If Rebecca's child belonged to Richard, then Daniel had another sibling.

A hidden Bennett heir.

A second child connected to the trust.

Megan remembered Anna's recording.

Lucas is not the only child connected to this trust.

Natalie's phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

"What?"

She listened.

Then looked directly at Daniel.

"Police found something else beneath the kitchen."

"What?"

"A sealed door."

Daniel stood.

"Where does it go?"

"They just opened it."

Natalie ended the call.

Her face had lost its color.

"What did they find?" Megan asked.

Natalie hesitated.

"A bedroom."

Megan felt cold.

"Whose?"

"They don't know."

The room contained a bed.

Old children's books.

A desk.

A height chart scratched into the wall.

And dozens of letters.

Every one addressed to Daniel.

None had ever been sent.

The oldest was written thirteen years earlier.
