Chapter 13 - The Successor)

Nobody entered the chamber.

At first.

Police dragged Martin away from the doorway, but his smile remained.

Claire pulled Mia behind her.

Daniel stared into the dark opening.

A row of lights activated one by one.

The chamber was smaller than expected.

No vault of money.

No shelves of secret files.

Only a chair.

A desk.

And an old computer terminal.

The screen illuminated.

WELCOME, SUCCESSOR.

Daniel looked at Claire.

“What triggered it?”

“I don’t know.”

Ethan approached carefully.

“No external network connection.”

Martin called from behind the officers.

“You cannot stop inheritance.”

Daniel turned.

“Take him downstairs.”

Martin laughed.

“Ask which Mercer entered the building.”

Daniel’s blood went cold.

There were three.

Daniel.

Evelyn.

Mia.

Claire was legally presumed dead but still Mercer by marriage.

Which one was the successor?

Claire looked at the terminal.

“Do not touch it.”

Daniel agreed.

Police secured the room.

Federal investigators arrived within hours after Sarah contacted authorities using evidence from Jonathan’s archive.

Martin Cole was charged initially with kidnapping, unlawful imprisonment, fraud, conspiracy, and several offenses connected to the highway crash.

The deeper investigation would take months.

Vanessa was also arrested.

Before officers took her away, Mia approached Daniel.

“Is she going to jail?”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

Probably.

Vanessa knelt several feet away.

She did not ask to speak to Mia.

Mia stared at her uneven hair.

Then asked, “Why did you hate me?”

Vanessa began crying.

“I didn’t hate you.”

Mia frowned.

“You acted like it.”

There was nothing Vanessa could say to that.

“I was cruel because I was afraid and selfish. You did nothing wrong.”

Mia looked at Daniel.

He let her decide whether to continue.

She turned back to Vanessa.

“You should have told Dad.”

“Yes.”

“You should have told me sorry before Dad came.”

Vanessa closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

Mia did not forgive her.

Daniel was grateful.

Children were too often taught that forgiveness was something they owed adults.

Mia owed Vanessa nothing.

She simply returned to Daniel’s side.

Vanessa was taken away.

Evelyn agreed to cooperate with investigators.

Her relationship with Daniel was not repaired.

Perhaps it never would be.

But she handed Sarah every document she possessed concerning the Mercer network.

Victor appeared at the federal building that afternoon with three boxes and an attorney.

His first sentence to Daniel was predictable.

“I assume you still want to hit me.”

Daniel almost smiled.

“Less than yesterday.”

“Progress.”

Victor surrendered his remaining records.

Michael Grant gave a formal statement.

For the first time, the truth about Claire’s crash began moving through legitimate channels instead of secret rooms.

But Claire herself remained the hardest truth.

Daniel took Mia and Claire to a protected residence that night.

Mia refused to sleep unless Claire sat beside the bed.

Daniel watched from the doorway.

Claire sang the same song she used to sing when Mia was a baby.

Mia fell asleep holding her hand.

Daniel walked downstairs.

Claire joined him twenty minutes later.

They stood across the kitchen from each other.

Three years of conversations crowded between them.

Daniel spoke first.

“You remembered us two years ago.”

“Yes.”

“And stayed away.”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“I watched you.”

He stared.

“What?”

“Through Martin’s system.”

Daniel felt anger rising.

“I watched Mia start school. I watched birthdays. I watched you.”

“You watched us grieve you.”

“Yes.”

“How could you?”

“I thought if Martin believed I was dead, you were safer.”

“He knew you were alive.”

“Not the entire time.”

“When did he find you?”

“Eight months ago.”

Daniel looked away.

“So before that, you could have come home.”

“I tried once.”

He looked back.

“When?”

“Seventeen months ago.”

“What happened?”

“I discovered the network had flagged your house.”

“The cameras?”

“Yes.”

“If I approached you, an alert would reach whoever controlled the Custodian system.”

“Martin.”

“I did not know whether it was Martin.”

Daniel rubbed his face.

“You trusted a machine more than me.”

“No.”

Claire moved closer.

“I was terrified the person controlling it was someone inside the family.”

“My mother.”

“Possibly.”

“Victor.”

“Possibly.”

“Me?”

Claire did not answer.

Daniel stared.

“You thought it could be me.”

“I did not know.”

He laughed quietly.

“That may be worse.”

“I know.”

Silence followed.

Then Claire whispered, “I am sorry.”

Daniel looked toward the stairs where Mia slept.

“I do not know what happens to us.”

Claire nodded.

“I know.”

“But you are her mother.”

“Yes.”

“She loves you.”

Claire began crying.

“I love her.”

“That is where we start.”

It was not forgiveness.

But it was a beginning.

The next morning, Sarah arrived with surprising news.

“The federal team opened a separate storage partition in the Cambridge servers.”

Daniel straightened.

“Jonathan?”

“They believe so.”

“Is he alive?”

“No answer yet.”

“But?”

Sarah placed a photograph on the table.

It showed Jonathan Vale entering an airport in Lisbon.

The date was six months earlier.

Claire grabbed it.

“He is alive.”

“Apparently.”

Daniel stared at Mia’s missing uncle.

Another person presumed lost.

Another person alive.

Sarah handed Daniel a printed message recovered from Jonathan’s encrypted archive.

Daniel read it.

If Claire returns, do not activate the succession terminal.

The Custodian is not a person.

Daniel looked up.

“What does that mean?”

Sarah shook her head.

Claire went pale.

Daniel noticed.

“You know.”

“No.”

“You reacted.”

Claire looked toward Mia’s room.

Then back at Daniel.

“When I was inside Martin’s network, I found something called Custodian Protocol.”

“What is it?”

“A decision system.”

“Software?”

“More than software.”

Daniel remembered Claire saying the network defended itself.

“What does it decide?”

“Who is dangerous to the trust.”

Daniel felt cold.

“And what does it do about them?”

Claire’s answer came quietly.

“Whatever it decides is necessary.”

Daniel thought of Claire’s crash.

Jonathan’s disappearance.

Michael’s falsified death.

The cameras turning on by themselves.

Then Sarah’s phone buzzed.

She read the message.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

“The chamber at headquarters.”

“What about it?”

“The terminal just activated again.”

Daniel stared.

“Who is there?”

“No one.”

Sarah turned the screen toward them.

A photograph had been transmitted from the chamber.

It showed Daniel standing beside Mia at the engagement party.

A red square surrounded his face.

May you like

Beneath it was one line.
