Chapter 12 - Claire Mercer)

Daniel crossed half the room before Martin raised a gun.

“Stop.”

Daniel stopped.

Mia screamed, “Daddy!”

Claire moved toward her.

Martin turned the weapon slightly.

“Everyone stays where they are.”

Daniel stared at Claire.

“You’re alive.”

Her eyes remained fixed on him.

“Yes.”

Three years of grief became anger so quickly he almost hated himself for it.

“You were alive.”

“Daniel.”

“You let me bury you.”

“I had no choice.”

“You let Mia believe you were dead.”

Claire’s face crumpled.

Martin smiled faintly.

“This reunion is touching, but we have limited time.”

Daniel looked at him.

“I will kill you.”

“No, you won’t.”

Martin pointed toward Mia.

“Because unlike the rest of your family, you still believe some lines should not be crossed.”

Claire said, “He needs the silver key.”

Evelyn gripped the chain beneath her blouse.

Martin looked at her.

“You kept it longer than expected.”

Evelyn’s voice shook.

“You told me Claire died.”

“She nearly did.”

Daniel stared at Martin.

“You took her from the highway.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“She had accessed something she could not be allowed to publish.”

“So you imprisoned her?”

Claire answered.

“Not exactly.”

Daniel looked at her.

Claire spoke quickly.

“After the crash, Martin moved me to a private clinic. I had brain trauma. I did not remember who I was for months.”

Daniel felt sick.

“When did you remember?”

“Pieces came back slowly.”

“When?”

“Daniel.”

“When did you remember Mia?”

Claire began crying.

“Almost two years ago.”

Daniel looked away as if struck.

Mia sobbed.

“Mommy.”

Claire crouched beside her.

“I’m here, baby.”

Martin said, “Enough.”

Daniel looked at Claire.

“You could have come home.”

“No.”

“Why?”

“Because when my memory returned, Martin showed me the network.”

“The Custodian system.”

“Yes.”

“He told me if I went to police, evidence would disappear and people would die.”

“You believed him?”

Claire looked at Evelyn.

“I watched him prove it.”

Evelyn lowered her eyes.

Daniel understood.

“What did he do?”

Claire spoke carefully.

“He showed me files on judges, officers, prosecutors, executives. People Mercer companies had monitored for decades. Enough secrets to destroy hundreds of lives.”

“And you stayed hidden.”

“I tried to dismantle it from inside.”

Martin laughed.

“You tried to steal it.”

Claire ignored him.

“I needed Jonathan.”

“Where is he?”

Claire’s face changed.

“I don’t know.”

“He disappeared.”

“I know.”

“Did Martin take him?”

Martin answered.

“No.”

Daniel turned.

“Then who?”

Martin’s expression became strange.

“The Custodian.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“You are the Custodian.”

“I am acting Custodian.”

“Who is above you?”

Martin looked toward an old metal door at the far side of the room.

“That is why we are here.”

Daniel frowned.

Evelyn whispered, “The primary chamber.”

Claire nodded.

“The real succession file is inside.”

“Who becomes Custodian after Martin?”

“That information is sealed.”

“Why?”

“Your grandfather was terrified someone would kill the successor before activation.”

Daniel looked at Mia.

“No.”

Claire moved closer to him.

“We do not know that it is Mia.”

“But the trust belongs to her.”

“Yes.”

Martin grew impatient.

“The key.”

Evelyn refused.

“No.”

Martin raised the gun toward Mia.

Daniel immediately stepped forward.

“Stop.”

Claire blocked his path.

“Daniel, if he opens that chamber, he can activate the network under a permanent Custodian.”

“And if I do not let him?”

Martin answered.

“You lose Mia.”

Daniel looked at his daughter.

There was no decision.

“Give him the key.”

Claire grabbed Daniel’s arm.

“No.”

“I am not sacrificing our daughter for a secret database.”

“It is bigger than that.”

“I do not care.”

“You will.”

“Claire.”

“You will care when you understand what the system can do.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Then destroy it after Mia is safe.”

Claire’s eyes filled with something like fear.

“I tried.”

Daniel remembered Jonathan’s notes.

“What happened?”

“The network defended itself.”

“What does that mean?”

Claire looked toward the surveillance camera above them.

“Some of it no longer requires a person.”

Daniel felt a chill.

Martin snapped, “The key.”

Evelyn removed the silver chain.

She held it out.

Vanessa suddenly spoke.

“Wait.”

Martin looked at her.

Vanessa stepped forward.

“You need me.”

“Yes.”

“So Mia is not necessary.”

Martin smiled.

“Her biometric signature is.”

Vanessa looked at Claire.

“You registered me five years ago.”

Claire nodded.

“Then use me instead.”

“Different credential class.”

Vanessa’s jaw tightened.

“You said if I helped you, the girl would not be hurt.”

Daniel looked at her.

Martin shrugged.

“Circumstances changed.”

Something in Vanessa’s face broke.

Not fear.

Loyalty.

She had spent years obeying Martin.

Now he had casually admitted Mia had always been expendable.

Vanessa walked toward him.

Martin raised the gun.

“Stop.”

Vanessa did not.

“Vanessa.”

She kept walking.

Then she said, “You should have learned one thing from Claire.”

“What?”

“Women eventually stop being afraid of you.”

She lunged.

Martin fired.

The shot struck a computer monitor.

Daniel ran.

Claire grabbed Mia and pulled her down.

Evelyn screamed.

Daniel slammed Martin against a desk.

The gun fell.

Vanessa kicked it away.

Ethan burst through the stairwell with police officers.

Within seconds Martin was on the floor, handcuffed.

Daniel barely saw it.

He reached Mia.

She threw herself into his arms.

Then Claire wrapped both of them together.

For one impossible moment, Daniel held his wife and daughter at the same time.

The family he believed he had lost.

Mia pressed her face against Claire’s shoulder.

“I knew it was you.”

Claire kissed her hair.

“I’m sorry.”

Daniel looked at the woman he had mourned for three years.

There would be questions.

Anger.

Pain.

Perhaps forgiveness.

But first, Mia was alive.

Martin was in custody.

Vanessa had helped save her.

And the steel chamber remained closed.

Then Martin began laughing from the floor.

Daniel looked at him.

“What?”

Martin smiled.

“You still think I brought you here to open it.”

Daniel felt the relief leave his body.

“Then why?”

Martin looked toward the chamber.

A green light appeared above the door.

Claire stood.

“No.”

The lock clicked.

Evelyn’s silver key was still in her hand.

Nobody had inserted it.

May you like

The steel door slowly opened by itself.

Martin whispered, “Because the successor is already here.”
