Chapter 1 - The Lock of Hair)

The first thing Daniel Mercer saw when he entered his own living room was a lock of his daughter’s hair on the marble floor.
For one impossible second, he did not understand what he was looking at.
The Mercer home was filled with nearly forty guests, soft piano music, crystal glasses, warm golden light, and the quiet luxury Vanessa had insisted upon for their engagement celebration. Men in dark suits stood beside women in elegant gowns. Champagne waited on silver trays. Fresh white roses covered the mantel beneath the enormous framed portrait of Daniel’s late wife.
Everything looked perfect.
Except for six-year-old Mia.
She was on her knees beside the piano.
Her pale pink party dress had twisted around her legs. Tears covered her cheeks. One hand gripped a thick piece of blonde hair against her chest.
The other hand covered the side of her head.
And Vanessa stood above her with a pair of silver scissors.
Daniel stopped in the doorway.
The room went silent.
Mia looked up.
Her expression changed so quickly that it nearly broke him.
Fear became recognition.
Recognition became desperate relief.
“Dad!”
Daniel crossed the room before anyone could move.
He saw the uneven section missing from Mia’s hair.
He saw Vanessa lower the scissors.
He saw guests looking away as though none of them wanted to admit they had witnessed what had happened.
Then Mia ran into him.
Daniel caught her.
Her small body shook violently against his chest.
“She cut my hair,” Mia sobbed. “She cut my hair.”
Daniel stared over his daughter’s head at Vanessa.
Vanessa’s face was pale, but her posture remained composed.
“Daniel, this looks terrible, but Mia was having a tantrum.”
Mia jerked away just enough to look at him.
“I wasn’t.”
Vanessa’s voice sharpened.
“She had scissors first.”
“I didn’t.”
“She was trying to ruin her own hair because she was angry about the party.”
Mia shook her head frantically.
“No.”
Daniel looked at the scissors.
Then at Mia.
Then at the guests.
Nobody spoke.
That silence told him almost as much as Mia’s tears.
Daniel stood and placed himself between Vanessa and his daughter.
“You touched my daughter.”
Vanessa blinked.
“Daniel.”
“Stay away from her.”
“Please do not make a scene.”
His eyes hardened.
“You already did.”
He took the scissors from Vanessa’s hand. She tried to hold onto them.
For the first time, her polished expression cracked.
“Give those back.”
Daniel pulled them free and threw them across the room. They skidded beneath a chair.
Vanessa reached for his arm.
He shoved her hand away.
She stumbled backward, lost her balance in her heels, and fell onto the carpet beside the sofa.
Several guests gasped.
Daniel barely heard them.
“You’re finished.”
Vanessa stared up at him.
Not frightened.
Not yet.
Something stranger crossed her face.
Calculation.
Then Mia tugged Daniel’s sleeve.
“Dad.”
He looked down.
Mia was pointing toward the large surveillance monitor built into the wall beside the study.
“I told her I wanted you to see.”
Daniel followed her finger.
The monitor was dark.
Then it flickered.
One camera feed appeared.
The living room.
Recorded twelve minutes earlier.
Daniel watched Vanessa walk toward Mia.
On the recording, Mia was sitting alone near the piano with a pink ribbon in her hair.
Vanessa crouched beside her.
The speakers crackled.
Vanessa’s recorded voice filled the silent room.
“You will stop telling your father things that happen when he is gone.”
Daniel felt his blood turn cold.
Mia on the screen whispered, “But you said I was ugly.”
“You misunderstood.”
“You locked my door.”
“I said you misunderstood.”
Mia began to cry.
Vanessa reached for her hair.
Then came the sentence Daniel would remember for the rest of his life.
“Your father is choosing me now, Mia. The sooner you understand that, the easier your life will be.”
Several guests murmured.
Vanessa scrambled to her feet.
“Turn that off.”
Daniel did not move.
The recording continued.
Mia backed away.
Vanessa took the scissors from the table.
“Do you think you’re prettier than me?”
Mia covered her head.
“Please, don’t.”
The scissors closed.
A lock of hair fell.
Someone behind Daniel whispered, “My God.”
Vanessa lunged toward the security console.
Daniel stepped in front of her.
“No.”
Her face changed.
Her confidence disappeared.
“Daniel, there is context.”
“What context?”
“You don’t understand what she has been doing.”
Daniel looked down at Mia.
His daughter had hidden behind his leg.
She was staring at Vanessa as if staring at a monster.
“What has my six-year-old daughter been doing?”
Vanessa opened her mouth.
Nothing came out.
Then the surveillance screen switched feeds by itself.
Daniel frowned.
This was not a replay he had selected.
The camera showed the upstairs hallway.
Timestamped three nights earlier.
Vanessa appeared on screen carrying a black folder.
She stopped outside Daniel’s office.
A man stepped into frame.
Daniel recognized him immediately.
His family attorney.
Martin Cole.
Martin looked toward the security camera.
Vanessa whispered something.
The audio was faint, but one sentence was clear.
“After Friday, Mia will no longer be a problem.”
Daniel slowly turned toward Vanessa.
The color drained completely from her face.
Martin Cole was standing among the guests.
Daniel looked across the room.
Martin was gone.
The front door was swinging shut.
May you like
And suddenly Daniel understood that the lock of hair on his floor was not the beginning of what had happened to his daughter.
It was the first piece of evidence he had finally been allowed to see.
