Chapter 7 - the grandmother who knew too much

Vivian Whitmore arrived at Ashford Holdings the next afternoon with three attorneys.

Daniel brought five.

Claire brought none.

She brought the recording.

They met in a glass conference room overlooking Manhattan.

Vivian sat at the opposite end of the table.

"You are making an astonishing mistake," she said.

Daniel folded his hands.

"You paid Preston to provoke Lily."

"I gave my grandson spending money."

"In an envelope containing a written instruction."

"Someone placed that note there."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"I don't care what you believe."

Claire watched Vivian carefully.

She no longer looked like the woman who had slapped a child without fear.

She looked like someone calculating exit routes.

Daniel slid a photograph across the table.

Thomas.

Montreal.

Three months earlier.

Vivian did not react.

That was the reaction.

Claire leaned forward.

"You knew he was alive."

Vivian looked at her.

"I know many things."

"Then start talking."

One of Vivian's attorneys intervened.

"My client is not here to answer accusations."

Daniel smiled faintly.

"Then why is she here?"

Silence.

Vivian finally spoke.

"Because we can still resolve this privately."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"Resolve what?"

"Your daughter's future."

"No."

"You haven't heard my offer."

"I don't need to."

Vivian's gaze sharpened.

"Twenty-five million dollars."

Claire almost laughed.

Daniel did not move.

"In exchange for?"

"Lily renounces any claim arising from Charles Ashford's private covenant."

Daniel's attorney spoke.

"A minor cannot execute that waiver."

"You misunderstand. Claire would contest paternity."

Claire stared at Vivian.

"Excuse me?"

"The amended birth certificate was improperly filed. Claire challenges it. Daniel does not oppose the challenge. Lily remains legally unrelated to the Ashford family for purposes of the trust."

Daniel's voice was quiet.

"You're asking me to deny my daughter."

"I'm offering peace."

"You mean control."

"I'm offering the child a life without lawyers, reporters, kidnapping risks, or boardroom warfare."

Claire hated that part because it contained truth.

Vivian saw hesitation.

"Do you think this becomes easier after her name reaches the press?"

Daniel answered.

"Threatening my daughter through hypotheticals is not negotiation."

Vivian looked at him.

"Your father built a trap and called it a legacy."

"You knew about the covenant."

"Of course."

"For how long?"

"Since before Charles died."

"And Thomas?"

"Also knew."

Claire asked, "Did Charles know I was pregnant?"

Vivian's expression changed.

"Yes."

Daniel leaned forward.

"How?"

"Your father had investigators."

"Why investigate Claire?"

"Because Thomas told him Daniel's girlfriend might be pregnant."

Claire's pulse quickened.

"Thomas knew before Daniel?"

Vivian looked at her almost pityingly.

"Thomas knew everything about Daniel."

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"Why didn't Father tell me?"

"Because he did not trust you."

The insult landed.

Daniel's face remained still.

Vivian continued.

"Charles believed you loved impulsively. He believed Thomas loved greedily. He believed neither of you should control the company without limitation."

"So he gave control to an unborn child?"

"No."

Vivian leaned back.

"He gave control to whoever could control that child."

Claire understood.

The trust was not protection.

It was bait.

"Charles used Lily."

"Charles used everyone."

Daniel stared at Vivian.

"And you helped him."

"I survived him."

"Did you help Thomas intercept Claire's letters?"

Vivian hesitated.

That hesitation was enough.

Claire's voice became cold.

"Yes or no?"

Vivian looked at her.

"I stopped three."

Claire's hands trembled.

"Three?"

"Thomas handled the rest."

"Why?"

"Because Daniel was about to challenge the trust."

Daniel frowned.

"I didn't know it existed."

"You were about to do it unknowingly."

"How?"

"By marrying Claire."

Daniel stared.

Vivian explained.

"Your father's private covenant included a morality provision. If either son married before thirty-five without board approval, control shifted into the granddaughter trust upon the birth of a female child."

Claire nearly laughed at the insanity.

"That sounds medieval."

"It was designed by a controlling man."

Daniel asked, "So if I married Claire and acknowledged Lily..."

"The transfer accelerated."

"And Thomas lost influence."

"Yes."

Claire felt physically sick.

"So he destroyed us for shares."

Vivian shook her head.

"No."

Everyone looked at her.

"He destroyed you because he believed Daniel intended to expose his financial crimes."

"Then Lily was leverage."

"Initially."

Claire caught the word.

"Initially?"

Vivian looked away.

Daniel stood.

"What happened after Lily was born?"

Vivian said nothing.

"Vivian."

She exhaled.

"Thomas became obsessed with the covenant."

"Why?"

"Because Charles added an attachment none of us had seen."

"What attachment?"

"A sealed memorandum."

"Where is it?"

"Missing."

"What does it say?"

"I don't know."

Daniel stared.

"You expect us to believe that?"

Vivian's face changed.

"I've spent seven years trying to find it."

Claire asked, "Why?"

"Because Thomas told me it could destroy the Ashford family."

Daniel leaned closer.

"And where is Thomas now?"

Vivian smiled without humor.

"If I knew, I wouldn't have come here."

Daniel looked at his attorneys.

The meeting was over.

Then Vivian said something that stopped everyone.

"Claire."

Claire turned.

"If Elena Ward contacts you, do not trust her."

Claire's eyes narrowed.

"Why?"

Vivian stood.

"Because Elena didn't start working for Thomas four years ago."

She collected her purse.

"She started working for your father eighteen years ago."

Claire's face went blank.

"My father died when I was thirteen."

Vivian looked directly at her.

May you like

"No, Claire."

"He didn't."
