Chapter 12 - the assassination that failed

Daniel had been in Singapore for five days when the elevator cable failed.
That was the official report.
Mechanical fault.
Rare.
Catastrophic.
Daniel stepped out twelve seconds before the elevator dropped nineteen floors.
Two maintenance workers died.
One security officer survived with severe injuries.
Daniel's company issued a statement expressing condolences.
The incident disappeared from headlines.
Claire stared at him across the kitchen.
"You didn't think this was relevant?"
"I didn't know it was connected."
"Someone tried to kill you."
"I didn't know that either."
"You suspected."
"Yes."
"And said nothing."
Daniel exhaled.
"Claire."
"No."
She stood.
"We lost seven years because other people controlled information between us. You do not get to continue the tradition."
The words landed.
Daniel nodded.
"You're right."
Claire had expected resistance.
His immediate agreement disarmed her.
He continued.
"The elevator inspection was falsified. Marcus discovered it after I returned."
"And?"
"The engineer responsible disappeared."
"Of course."
"I came to Bellamy House because Marcus traced a payment connected to the inspection."
"To Vivian?"
"No."
"Martin?"
"No."
Daniel looked toward Lily playing in the adjoining room.
"Elena."
Claire went still.
"My Elena?"
"Yes."
It explained why Daniel had appeared at the ballroom unexpectedly.
"You were following her."
"I thought she was involved in the Singapore attempt."
"And you didn't know she worked for me?"
"Not until the day before the party."
Claire paced.
"Then someone put Elena in my life four years ago and used her against both of us."
"Or she changed sides."
Claire stopped.
"What?"
"She told you she protected Lily."
"You believe her?"
"I believe people are rarely as simple as their job descriptions."
That evening Elena proved him right.
She appeared at the Ashford estate gate.
Alone.
No weapon.
Hands visible.
Marcus wanted her arrested immediately.
Detective Hart wanted her questioned.
Claire wanted answers.
Elena sat in a secured room.
She looked exhausted.
"I was recruited by Charles Ashford," she said.
Claire stared.
"Vivian told me you worked for my father."
"She meant Charles."
"You worked for Charles eighteen years ago?"
"Yes."
"What did you do?"
"Information security."
Daniel frowned.
"You were young."
"Twenty."
"Why would my father trust you?"
"He didn't."
Elena looked at Claire.
"Anne did."
Claire's chest tightened.
"You knew my mother?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because she asked me not to."
"When?"
"The week before she died."
Elena removed a thin chain from beneath her collar.
A silver bird pendant hung from it.
Marcus immediately stepped forward.
Claire stared.
"You're Silverbird."
Elena shook her head.
"I infiltrated Silverbird."
Daniel crossed his arms.
"Convenient."
"I know."
"Prove it."
Elena placed a flash drive on the table.
"Financial records. Communications. Identities."
"Whose?"
"Martin's network."
Claire asked, "Is Martin Silverbird?"
"No."
"Then who?"
Elena looked at Daniel.
"Your father created the position."
Daniel's face hardened.
"Why?"
"Originally to identify anyone threatening Ashford continuity. Political investigators. Corporate rivals. Criminal intermediaries."
"Espionage."
"Yes."
"And after Charles died?"
"Someone took control."
"Who?"
"I don't know."
Claire stared at Elena.
"You spent years infiltrating them and don't know?"
"Silverbird communicates through proxies."
"The man at the ballroom?"
"A courier."
"Where is he?"
"Dead."
The room became silent.
Marcus asked, "When?"
"Yesterday."
"How?"
"Car crash."
Daniel gave a humorless laugh.
"Of course."
Elena continued.
"Thomas contacted me four years ago."
Claire's anger returned.
"You worked with him."
"At first."
"Why?"
"Because he said he wanted to expose Silverbird."
"And?"
"He lied."
Daniel leaned forward.
"What does Thomas want?"
"Control of Lily's shares."
Claire shook her head.
"Then why tell us about the assassination?"
"Because Thomas needs Daniel alive."
Everyone looked at her.
Elena explained.
"If Daniel dies before Lily's eighth birthday and paternity is contested, the trust freezes."
"And Martin?"
"Gets temporary voting authority."
"So Thomas loses."
"Yes."
Daniel asked, "Which means the assassination came from Silverbird."
"Probably."
Claire looked at Lily through the glass door.
"Then they might target her."
Elena's silence answered.
Claire's voice became quiet.
"What haven't you told me?"
Elena looked devastated.
"The incident at the ballroom wasn't meant only to embarrass Lily."
Claire stared.
"Then what?"
"During the confrontation, a woman was supposed to take Lily through the service corridor."
Daniel rose instantly.
"A kidnapping?"
"Yes."
"Why didn't it happen?"
Elena looked at Claire.
"Because you got back to her too quickly."
Claire remembered the waiter.
The fake message.
The boys pulling at the glass.
Vivian moving toward Lily.
Everything had been designed to create confusion.
"Vivian knew?"
"No."
"She paid Preston."
"Yes, but she thought the objective was humiliation."
"Why?"
"Thomas told her Claire would leave after a scandal."
Daniel's face became stone.
"So Vivian helped create the distraction."
"Yes."
"And Silverbird hijacked Thomas's plan to attempt a kidnapping."
"Yes."
Claire stood.
She wanted to scream.
Instead she crossed the room and looked out toward the dark lawn.
Behind her, Elena said, "There's one more thing."
Claire did not turn.
"What?"
"Silverbird already has someone inside this house."
Daniel looked toward Marcus.
Marcus looked toward the security monitors.
May you like
Elena whispered:
"And I think that person has been here since Lily arrived."
