Chapter 6 - the inheritance no one mentioned

Daniel's father, Charles Ashford, had died eight months before Lily was born.

Claire had met him only twice.

He had been intimidating without raising his voice.

A man from an era when family businesses were treated like kingdoms.

The second time Claire met him, he had studied her for a long moment before saying something strange.

"You look like someone who would run rather than let a child be used as leverage."

Claire had believed he was speaking hypothetically.

Now she was no longer sure.

Daniel took Claire and Lily to the Ashford estate the following morning.

It was not the palatial mansion Claire expected.

The main house was enormous, but Daniel lived primarily in a smaller stone residence on the property.

Lily immediately liked the library.

"This is your house?"

"Technically."

"Do you know how many books you have?"

"No."

"That's weird."

Daniel smiled.

Claire watched from the doorway.

Their resemblance had always been obvious to her.

Now it seemed almost cruel.

The same concentration when reading.

The same slight narrowing of the eyes when suspicious.

The same habit of tapping two fingers when thinking.

Daniel noticed Claire watching.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You were staring."

"I'm adjusting."

"So am I."

Before she could answer, Marcus entered.

"We found Charles Ashford's final trust documents."

Daniel stood.

"And?"

"There are two versions."

"Two?"

"One filed publicly. One held privately by the family's former counsel."

Claire joined them.

"What's the difference?"

Marcus opened a folder.

"The public trust divided control between Daniel and Thomas."

"And the private version?"

Marcus looked at Lily.

Daniel understood.

"Rachel, can you take Lily to the kitchen?"

Lily objected.

"I want to know."

Claire crouched.

"This is boring adult paperwork."

Lily narrowed her eyes.

"That's what adults say when it's interesting."

Daniel almost laughed.

Rachel eventually persuaded her with hot chocolate.

Once Lily left, Marcus continued.

"The private version includes something called the Ashford Continuity Covenant."

Daniel frowned.

"I've never heard of it."

"It transfers a controlling block of dormant shares to the first biological granddaughter of Charles Ashford upon her eighth birthday."

Claire felt cold.

"Lily turns eight in two months."

"Exactly."

Daniel read the document.

"How many shares?"

Marcus named the number.

Daniel looked up sharply.

Claire did not understand.

"What does that mean?"

"It means Lily would become the single largest individual shareholder in Ashford Holdings."

Claire stared.

"She's seven."

"Yes."

"She likes cereal shaped like dinosaurs."

"I know."

"She cannot control a billion-dollar company."

"She wouldn't directly. A trustee would manage the shares until she reaches twenty-five."

"Who is the trustee?"

Marcus answered.

"Originally Charles."

"He's dead."

"Then control passes to the named successor trustee."

Daniel scanned the page.

His face hardened.

"Thomas."

Claire sat down.

Everything became clear.

Thomas had not been trying merely to destroy Daniel's relationship.

He had been trying to control Lily's inheritance.

"But everyone believed Thomas was dead."

Daniel kept reading.

"If he's legally dead, trusteeship passes again."

"To whom?"

Daniel looked at her.

"Vivian Whitmore."

Claire closed her eyes.

There it was.

The reason Vivian needed Claire gone.

The reason Thomas disappeared.

The reason Lily had been watched.

Daniel continued.

"If Thomas reappears before Lily's eighth birthday, he can challenge his death declaration and reclaim successor authority."

Claire stared.

"So he plans to come back."

"Possibly."

"Then why keep himself hidden?"

"Because he's still wanted for financial crimes if investigators reopen the embezzlement case."

Marcus nodded.

"He needs immunity, leverage, or someone else to take the blame."

Claire remembered Elena.

"And my former assistant?"

"Probably part of the operation."

Claire paced.

"Then why stage the incident at the ballroom?"

Daniel looked toward the windows.

"To test us."

"Test what?"

"Whether you would run again."

Claire stopped.

He immediately regretted the wording.

"I didn't run."

"I know."

"No, Daniel. Say it properly."

He faced her.

"You were isolated, threatened, financially attacked, deceived, and forced into survival. You did not run."

Claire held his gaze.

"Thank you."

Marcus's phone buzzed.

He checked it.

"Detective Hart traced the phone that sent Claire the photograph."

"To whom?"

"Prepaid. But it connected to Bellamy House Wi-Fi."

Daniel's eyes narrowed.

"During the event?"

"Yes."

"Location?"

"The phone was connected from upstairs."

Claire remembered the dark gallery.

"Near the staircase?"

"Closer to Vivian's private office."

Daniel looked at Marcus.

"Search warrant?"

"Hart is working on it."

Lily suddenly appeared in the doorway.

She had heard enough.

"What happens when I'm eight?"

Claire froze.

"Lily."

"Do I get something?"

Daniel walked toward her.

"Yes."

"What?"

He crouched.

"Something my grandfather wanted you to have."

"Money?"

"Partly."

"How much?"

Daniel hesitated.

"A lot."

Lily considered this seriously.

"Enough to buy a horse?"

Claire almost laughed despite everything.

"Unfortunately, yes."

Lily smiled.

Then her expression changed.

"Is that why the lady hit me?"

The adults went silent.

Daniel answered carefully.

"No. She hit you because she made a terrible choice."

"Does she want my money?"

"Maybe."

Lily looked toward Claire.

"Can I just not take it?"

Claire's heart broke.

Daniel shook his head.

"You should never have to give up something that belongs to you just because someone else behaves badly."

Lily thought about that.

Then asked, "Can you make them stop?"

Daniel looked at Claire.

This time Claire answered.

"Yes."

May you like

It was a promise.

And unlike all the promises that had been stolen from them seven years earlier, she intended to keep it.
