THE NIGHT THE BALLROOM BOWED / Chapter 8 / 15

Chapter 8 - Lift All Restrictions

"You watched her hit your daughter."

Eleanor's words traveled farther than a scream.

Julian looked at Maya on the floor. The ballroom waited.

This was the choice.

No money had been revealed. No Ashbourne guards had entered. No public truth had rescued him from the burden of deciding who he was.

Genevieve whispered, "Julian, control your wife."

He bent, picked up the tiara, and set it on the stage.

Then he turned to his mother.

"Get out."

Genevieve blinked. "What?"

"Get out of my house."

Her laugh was sharp. "Your house exists because I built your life."

"You stole my life."

"You ungrateful—"

Julian stepped between her and Maya.

"Touch my daughter again, and I will personally testify to every crime I have spent years pretending not to see."

A murmur passed through the guests.

Eleanor felt both relief and grief. He had chosen, but only after the wound became visible to everyone.

Genevieve pointed at Eleanor. "She has manipulated you."

"No," Julian said. "She waited for me to become better than I was."

Eleanor tore the red thread from her wrist.

The hidden screen awakened.

"Tell my father," she said, "lift all restrictions."

Genevieve laughed.

"Without us, you're nothing."

The ballroom doors opened.

Arthur Ashbourne entered with twelve members of private security, Thomas Reed, two federal investigators, and a woman carrying sealed court orders.

Maya ran to him.

"Grandpa... she's the lady who hurt me."

Arthur's hand rested on her hair. His face became stone.

"Which one of you wants to explain why my granddaughter is bleeding in a house I paid for?"

Every phone in the room rang.

Vale board members checked their screens. Credit facilities had been frozen. Ashbourne Global had acquired the debt securing the estate, the hotel flagship, and the family's private aircraft. Emergency votes removed Genevieve as chair pending fraud investigations.

The woman with the court orders approached.

"Genevieve Vale, you are restrained from contact with Maya Vale, Eleanor Ashbourne, Celeste Vale, or any employee of Saint Orison's."

Genevieve stared at Eleanor.

"Ashbourne."

The name moved through the room like weather.

Sabrina's father nearly dropped his glass.

Julian looked at Eleanor as if seeing the scale of an ocean after believing it was a lake.

Arthur embraced Maya, then faced his daughter.

"You waited too long."

Eleanor's voice was cold. "You arrived too late."

The reunion everyone expected did not happen.

Arthur's eyes flickered with pain, but he concealed it. "We can discuss that privately."

"No. We discuss it after Genevieve is removed."

The investigators approached Genevieve.

She did not resist. She smiled.

"You think this ends because Arthur entered a ballroom?"

Eleanor held Maya tighter.

Genevieve leaned close as she passed.

"Ask him who ordered Nathaniel's boat to sail."

Arthur's cane stopped.

Only Eleanor noticed.

Outside, reporters shouted as Genevieve was escorted into a waiting car. Guests fled before their names could become part of the scandal. The orchestra packed in silence.

By midnight, the ballroom was empty except for family.

Celeste arrived through the side entrance.

Julian saw her and crossed the room. He stopped inches away, uncertain whether he deserved to touch her.

Celeste made the choice for him.

She held her son.

Arthur watched from across the room.

Celeste's expression hardened over Julian's shoulder.

"You."

"Celeste."

"You promised Nathaniel would live."

Arthur removed his glasses. "I promised to protect the evidence."

"That was not what I asked."

Eleanor placed the silver cylinder on the table.

"Enough half-truths."

Arthur looked at it. "Where did you get that?"

"From the woman your silence nearly destroyed."

The cylinder contained numbers, but no names. Thomas inserted it into a portable reader. A sequence of accounts appeared, followed by coordinates and a date seven years in the future.

Tomorrow's date.

Arthur went pale.

Adrian leaned toward the screen. "What happens tomorrow?"

Arthur did not answer.

The chandelier lights died.

A single projector came alive on the ballroom wall.

A live video appeared.

An older man sat in a dark room, his face partly hidden. Around his neck hung a pendant Celeste recognized immediately.

Nathaniel's.

The man spoke.

"Arthur. Genevieve. Celeste. If you are watching this together, one of you finally broke the agreement."

Celeste gripped the table.

Julian whispered, "Father?"

The man looked directly into the camera.

"The Keeper is coming for the child."

The feed vanished.

From upstairs came the sound of breaking glass.

Eleanor ran.

Maya's bedroom window stood open.

May you like

On the pillow lay the red thread.

Maya was gone.
