Chapter 7 - The Gala of Masks

By evening, Vale House glittered like a jeweled trap.
Florists covered the grand staircase in white roses. Musicians tuned beneath the painted ceiling. Ice sculptures carried the Vale crest. News cameras waited beyond the gates to photograph the merger that would supposedly rescue the company.
Genevieve wore emerald silk.
Sabrina wore silver.
Eleanor chose black.
Maya's gown was deep red, the color of the thread around Eleanor's wrist. She did not want to wear the tiara, but Genevieve insisted.
"Tonight, appearances matter."
Eleanor crouched before her daughter. "You never have to wear something that makes you afraid."
Maya looked at Julian.
He took the tiara from Genevieve and placed it on a side table. "She said no."
It was a small act, late and fragile, but Eleanor saw the effort.
Genevieve's eyes chilled. "Do not confuse guilt with courage."
Guests arrived. Julian performed confidence while Adrian quietly copied server logs from the family office. Nana Rose moved through the crowd delivering messages hidden beneath champagne trays.
Celeste watched the gala through a secure video feed.
The plan had three parts.
First, expose the forged custody and clinic records.
Second, recover the coded ledger from the music box before Genevieve moved it.
Third, force Julian to choose publicly, without knowing Eleanor's identity or the extent of Ashbourne power.
Eleanor found the music box displayed inside a new glass case in the library. The cylinder had been removed.
Sabrina entered behind her.
"Looking for this?"
She held a silver cylinder.
Eleanor closed the door. "Why do you have it?"
"Genevieve gave it to my father as collateral."
"Then why bring it back?"
Sabrina's composure cracked. "Because my father told me what happens to women who become inconvenient to Genevieve Vale."
Eleanor said nothing.
Sabrina continued. "I believed I was negotiating a marriage. I did not realize I was auditioning for captivity."
She handed over the cylinder.
"Why help me?"
"Because Julian does not love me. Because I do not want a child to disappear so my family can gain a bank. Choose whichever reason makes me less shameful."
Eleanor accepted it. "All of them can be true."
A knock sounded.
Sabrina opened a side door and left as Julian entered through the main one.
"My mother wants you in the ballroom."
"Did she send you?"
"No. I came to warn you." He looked exhausted. "The separation announcement has been moved forward. She plans to make it before dinner."
"Will you stand beside her?"
"If I don't, she may destroy the company."
"She kidnapped Maya."
"I know."
"She imprisoned your mother."
"I know."
"Then why are you still discussing the company?"
"Because twelve thousand people work for Vale Meridian."
Eleanor stepped closer. "And how many people must your mother hurt before protecting the company becomes another name for protecting yourself?"
He could not answer.
She placed the cylinder inside her sleeve.
"Tonight," she said, "you will have one final chance."
"To do what?"
"Say something."
The ballroom lights dimmed.
Genevieve took the stage and welcomed the guests. She spoke of legacy, continuity, sacrifice, and the union between Vale Meridian and Kessler Bank.
Then she called Julian forward.
Sabrina did not move.
Whispers spread.
Genevieve's smile tightened. "Sabrina."
The heiress walked onto the stage but stopped several feet from Julian.
Eleanor stood with Maya near the center of the ballroom.
Genevieve raised a glass. "Tonight, we also acknowledge a private transition. Julian and Eleanor have agreed—"
"No," Maya said.
The word was small, but a nearby microphone caught it.
Guests turned.
Genevieve descended from the stage. "Children should not interrupt adults."
Maya clutched Eleanor's hand. "Daddy said families don't trade people."
Julian's face changed.
Genevieve reached for Maya.
Eleanor stepped between them.
"Do not touch her."
A camera flashed.
Genevieve lowered her voice. "You were offered a graceful exit."
"I decline."
"You signed nothing, own nothing, and have nowhere to go."
Eleanor felt the red thread against her pulse.
"Then why are you so afraid of me?"
Genevieve's control broke.
Her hand rose.
The slap struck Maya instead.
The child fell across the marble floor.
May you like
The tiara rolled toward Julian.
And the night began exactly as the Vale family would remember it forever.
