Chapter 13 - The Return of the Matriarch

Genevieve poured tea while Maya colored a red castle.

Julian stood behind the kitchen island with one hand hidden beneath the counter. Arthur was nowhere visible.

The camera angle came from Maya's tablet.

Eleanor called Julian. He did not answer, but his eyes shifted toward the screen as if he heard the vibration.

Genevieve smiled into the camera.

"Welcome home, Eleanor."

Helena gripped the terrace rail. "She wants me."

"Why?"

"Because I hold the map to the second archive."

Eleanor's anger returned with focus. "There is another archive."

"Not evidence. Identities. Every protected witness, infiltrator, and child relocated during the Cross investigation."

"Maya's name is there?"

"Your name was. Genevieve believes the map can reveal bloodlines tied to dormant trusts."

On the feed, Genevieve touched Maya's hair.

Julian moved.

A second figure entered with a gun and pointed it at his chest.

Adrian.

His face was bruised.

"Eleanor," he said to the tablet, "don't believe what you see."

Genevieve's smile vanished.

Adrian swung the gun toward her.

Arthur stepped from behind the pantry and struck the armed guard beside Genevieve. Julian pulled Maya beneath the table. The kitchen erupted.

The feed cut.

Eleanor called security. No answer.

Helena opened a hidden cabinet containing passports, weapons, and satellite equipment. "The sea house has a storm tunnel. Genevieve will use it."

"How did she escape custody?"

"Someone in Arthur's government contacts still serves the old network."

They returned by private flight, landing before dawn.

The sea house showed signs of struggle but no bodies. Arthur had a broken wrist. Adrian had been shot through the shoulder. Julian and Maya were safe inside a secure room.

Genevieve had escaped through the tunnel.

Maya ran to Eleanor and then stopped when she saw Helena.

"Who is she?"

Eleanor knelt. "My mother."

Maya considered this. "The dead one?"

Helena almost laughed through tears. "I have been difficult to explain."

Maya touched the scar on her neck. "Did a bad lady hurt you too?"

"Yes."

"Was it Grandma Genevieve?"

"Partly."

Maya held out a red crayon. "You can use this. Mommy says red means we are not scared."

Helena accepted it like a sacred object.

Genevieve left behind a message carved into the kitchen table.

Coronation at midnight.

Helena knew the location: an abandoned royal theater in Vienna used as a meeting site during the investigation.

The second archive map existed in a crown-shaped cipher device. Helena had hidden it inside Arthur's signet ring years ago. Eleanor had the ring in a locked drawer.

The drawer was empty.

Maya had seen Genevieve take it.

"She said Grandpa didn't deserve jewelry."

Arthur blamed himself. Helena blamed the compromised witness network. Julian blamed years of obedience that taught Genevieve she could always return.

Eleanor ended the argument.

"She wants us divided because division is the only throne she has left."

They planned together.

Helena knew the theater. Arthur knew the old officials. Celeste knew Genevieve's fears. Julian knew her habits. Adrian knew the criminal accounts. Sabrina could trigger international banking alerts. Rose could identify hidden passages from original building plans.

At midnight, the royal theater glowed beneath hundreds of candles.

Genevieve stood onstage wearing black velvet and the Ashbourne signet ring.

Around her sat masked buyers representing governments, corporations, and criminal families. They had come to bid on the identities in the second archive.

Maya was not there. This time, Eleanor had left her with trusted security in a location known only to Leila.

Genevieve raised the ring.

"Within this cipher are the names of heirs, witnesses, and hidden beneficiaries worth billions."

Eleanor entered the royal box.

"No," she said. "Within that ring is nothing."

Genevieve turned.

Helena appeared in the opposite box.

Arthur entered through the orchestra aisle.

Julian, Celeste, Adrian, and investigators sealed the exits.

Genevieve pressed the ring.

It projected a single message.

You were never the queen.

Helena smiled.

"The true cipher was removed twenty-five years ago."

Panic spread among the buyers. Investigators began arrests.

Genevieve stared at Eleanor. "Then why come?"

"To let every person you sold lies to watch you become worthless."

For the first time, Genevieve looked small.

Then a shot cracked from the balcony.

Helena fell.

The shooter vanished through the curtains.

Genevieve looked up in genuine horror.

"I did not order that."

Eleanor dropped beside her mother.

Blood spread across Helena's white coat.

With shaking fingers, Helena pressed the red crayon Maya had given her into Eleanor's hand.

"The crown," she whispered. "It was never in the ring."

"Where is it?"

May you like

Helena's eyes moved toward Julian.

"In the child he thinks is his."
