Chapter 5 - The Vanishing Child

Eleanor did not call Julian.
She called Nana Rose.
Rose answered on the first ring, breathing hard. "They took her through the kitchen passage. Black car. No plates."
"Who?"
"Mr. Vale's head of security and two men from the clinic."
"Which clinic?"
"I don't know."
Eleanor pressed the red thread.
"Track every vehicle leaving the estate in the last twelve minutes," she whispered. "Prioritize unregistered sedans. Do not alert local police."
The device pulsed once.
Julian entered the bedroom. "Where is Maya?"
Eleanor looked at him.
He understood.
They ran downstairs together. Genevieve sat in the breakfast room, spreading marmalade across toast.
"Where is she?" Julian demanded.
"Safe."
"Bring her back."
"After the gala."
Eleanor crossed the room and swept the breakfast service from the table. Porcelain exploded against the wall.
Genevieve did not flinch.
"You have ten seconds," Eleanor said.
Julian grabbed her arm. "Eleanor."
She turned so sharply he released her.
"Do not touch me while our child is missing."
Genevieve sipped her tea. "Maya has become confused. She requires professional guidance."
"The same kind you gave Celeste?" Adrian asked from the doorway.
Julian stared at his mother. "You sent Maya to a clinic?"
"A private residence."
"Where?"
Genevieve looked at Eleanor. "Leave Vale House. Sign custody to Julian. Maya returns before the gala."
Julian's face turned gray. "Mother, no."
"You wanted the Kessler agreement. You wanted stability. This is stability."
"I never agreed to kidnapping."
"You agreed not to ask how outcomes were achieved."
The sentence wounded him because it was true.
Eleanor's thread vibrated. A map appeared against her wrist. The sedan had turned north toward the old coast road.
She moved for the door.
Julian followed. "I'm coming."
"No."
"She is my daughter."
"Then act like her father and keep Genevieve here."
He caught up near the entrance. "You can't go alone."
Eleanor opened the coat closet and removed a slim black case hidden behind winter umbrellas. Inside were a satellite phone, cash, medical supplies, and a compact stun device.
Julian stared.
"Who are you?"
"Too late."
She drove through heavy snow with Ashbourne security guiding her through the hidden screen. The sedan stopped at Saint Orison's, a private psychiatric facility officially closed after a fire ten years earlier.
The gates were chained.
Eleanor drove through them.
Inside the main building, emergency lights washed the corridors red. She found the security chief unconscious near the stairwell, a syringe beside him. Someone else had entered first.
"Maya!"
A child's cry answered from above.
Eleanor took the stairs two at a time. On the third floor, a nurse stood beside a locked room.
"Mrs. Vale, your daughter is unharmed."
"Open the door."
"I have orders."
Eleanor raised the stun device. "So do I."
The nurse opened it.
Maya ran into Eleanor's arms. She wore her blue coat and clutched a wooden bird Eleanor had never seen.
A woman stood behind her.
She was thin, silver threaded through her dark hair, but her eyes matched Julian's exactly.
Celeste.
Maya whispered, "She helped me hide."
Celeste stared at Eleanor's wrist. "Arthur's daughter."
"You know me?"
"I knew your mother."
The hallway lights died.
Men shouted downstairs.
Celeste gripped Eleanor's hand. "Genevieve did not send Maya here only to frighten you. She sent her because this building contains records that can destroy the Vale family."
"What records?"
"Proof that Julian's father is alive."
Eleanor heard boots on the stairs.
"Come with us."
Celeste shook her head. "Not yet. There is a basement vault. Take the bird."
Maya handed Eleanor the wooden carving. A tiny brass key was hidden beneath one wing.
"Who is Julian's father?" Eleanor asked.
Celeste's expression twisted with old grief.
"Samuel Rook."
"The musician?"
"No." Celeste looked toward the approaching footsteps. "That was the name he used before Arthur Ashbourne made him disappear."
Eleanor froze.
"My father?"
Celeste pushed them toward the service elevator.
"Ask Arthur why the man who loved me had to die."
The stairwell door burst open.
Celeste stepped into the corridor and pulled the fire alarm.
As Eleanor and Maya descended into darkness, Maya looked up.
"Mommy, is Grandpa bad?"
May you like
Eleanor held her tighter.
For the first time in her life, she did not know.
