Chapter 5 - The Six Names)

Police found the list inside the cottage wall.

Not because Rachel told them where it was.

Because Noah did.

The five-year-old had wandered onto the porch while Daniel spoke with Detective Mendez.

He saw a loose piece of paneling near the floor and said, "Mommy put paper there."

Daniel immediately called Mendez.

Behind the panel was a sealed plastic sleeve.

Inside were six index cards.

Each card contained a girl's name.

A birth date.

A medical record number.

And a number beside the word Transfer.

Anna Bennett.

Emily Cross.

Rose Dalton.

Megan Pierce.

Lucy Warner.

The sixth card did not say Claire Bennett.

It said:

Claire Morgan.

Date of birth: November 14, 1993.

Claire's birthday.

Daniel stared at the card.

Then at his sister.

Claire laughed once.

"This is some kind of mistake."

Margaret looked as if she were going to faint again.

Claire turned to her.

"Mom?"

Margaret said nothing.

"Mom."

Daniel took a step forward.

"Why does that card have Claire's birthday?"

Margaret sat down.

Her face had become gray.

"I don't know."

Claire stared at her.

"You know something."

"No."

"You always say no before you tell us half the truth."

Margaret flinched.

Claire hated herself for the cruelty.

But she was tired.

Tired of secrets shaped like protection.

Tired of adults deciding what other people could survive knowing.

Mendez examined the card.

"Do you know anyone named Morgan?"

Margaret slowly shook her head.

Then stopped.

Claire noticed.

"Who?"

Margaret whispered, "A nurse."

Daniel stiffened.

"What nurse?"

"When Claire was born."

The silence became unbearable.

Margaret looked at Claire.

"I had complications."

Claire had heard that story.

Premature labor.

Emergency surgery.

Three days unconscious.

When Margaret woke, Robert placed baby Claire in her arms.

Margaret had always described it as the happiest moment of her life.

Now she said there had been a nurse named Evelyn Morgan.

"She visited me after I came home."

"Why?"

"She said there were questions about hospital paperwork."

Robert sent her away.

A week later Margaret received a letter.

Robert burned it before she finished reading.

"I thought it was about insurance."

Claire stared at the card.

Claire Morgan.

Her own birthday.

A medical record number.

Transfer.

Daniel said what Claire could not.

"Are you saying Claire might not be your biological daughter?"

Margaret's face crumpled.

"No."

Claire stood too quickly.

Pain shot through her leg.

Daniel caught her.

She shoved his hands away.

"I need air."

She walked toward the lake.

Behind her, people called her name.

She kept going.

At the shoreline she finally stopped.

The water reflected an orange evening sky.

She remembered childhood summers.

Daniel teaching her to skip rocks.

Margaret putting sunscreen on her nose.

Robert yelling when she wandered near the storage building.

What if none of it was what she thought?

Daniel came beside her.

"You don't have to figure this out tonight."

Claire laughed.

"Apparently I've had thirty-two years."

"You are my sister."

She looked at him.

"You don't know that."

"Yes, I do."

"Biologically."

"I don't care."

She did.

Not because blood was everything.

Because truth mattered.

Because someone had written her name in a hidden room under a cottage connected to missing girls and a dead child.

Because her father had lied about Anna.

Because Rachel had threatened a witness.

Because her mother had been afraid for decades.

Claire looked at Daniel.

"What if I was one of them?"

"One of who?"

"The girls."

Daniel said nothing.

Claire continued.

"What if Dad didn't just hurt Anna?"

Daniel's jaw tightened.

"What if he brought me into the family?"

"You were a baby."

"Exactly."

Daniel looked back at the investigators.

"We'll get a DNA test."

Claire nodded.

"Tonight."

Daniel did not argue.

Mendez arranged it.

She also had Margaret tested.

Robert refused.

Police obtained a warrant.

While waiting, Rachel was formally arrested for evidence tampering and witness intimidation after Susan Hale agreed to provide a statement.

Robert was detained on suspicion of obstruction and possible crimes connected to the cottage.

No murder charge had been filed.

Not yet.

At 11:17 p.m., Claire sat in the emergency department while doctors checked her leg.

Daniel sat beside her.

Noah slept against his chest.

Margaret sat across the room.

Nobody spoke.

Then Detective Mendez entered.

Her expression told Claire something had happened.

"We found something else beneath the cottage."

Claire's stomach tightened.

"What?"

"A compartment beneath the concrete floor."

Daniel shifted Noah carefully.

Mendez continued.

"There were cassette tapes."

"Of what?"

"We don't know yet."

"How many?"

"Thirty-two."

Claire stared.

Mendez held out a photograph.

Each cassette was labeled with a date.

The oldest was the year Anna died.

The newest was seventeen years later.

One cassette had a name written across it.

Claire.

Claire's hand shook.

Daniel looked at Mendez.

"When?"

May you like

The detective answered.

"On Claire's seventh birthday."
