Chapter 1 - The Birthday Video)

The siren did not stop at the Bennett house.

It passed the street and faded into the distance.

Rachel exhaled.

Claire saw it.

Daniel saw it too.

He took Noah's phone gently.

"Did you call anyone?"

Noah shook his head.

Daniel looked around the room.

Half the guests had their own phones out now.

Rachel noticed them and immediately changed.

Her shoulders dropped.

Her face softened.

Her voice became wounded.

"Daniel, please. This is humiliating."

Claire almost laughed again.

Humiliating.

Rachel had shoved her into a birthday table in front of children.

Robert had taken away the crutch she needed to stand.

But somehow Rachel had already found a way to become the victim.

Daniel ignored her.

He looked at the phone.

The recording showed nearly forty minutes of the party.

Noah had apparently placed the device on a shelf near the presents to record himself opening gifts later.

Daniel dragged the progress bar backward.

Rachel suddenly said, "Noah, why were you recording us without permission?"

Daniel looked up.

"He's five."

Rachel swallowed.

Daniel pressed play.

The first minutes were ordinary.

Guests arriving.

Children running through the room.

Claire entering carefully with her crutch.

Noah hugging her around the waist.

Then Rachel appeared.

Even through the small speaker, her voice was clear.

"You actually came."

Claire heard herself answer.

"It's Noah's birthday."

Rachel stepped close enough to block the camera's view.

"You should've stayed home."

"Why?"

"Because nobody wants another scene."

Claire remembered the moment.

At the time she had thought Rachel was referring to the argument the night before.

Now she wondered whether Rachel had been afraid Claire would say something before Daniel came home.

On the screen, Claire walked away.

The video continued.

Twenty minutes later, Robert arrived beside Rachel near the kitchen.

Their voices were quieter.

Daniel increased the volume.

Rachel said something difficult to hear.

Then Robert responded.

"She doesn't know enough."

Claire's heart pounded.

Daniel replayed it.

Rachel glanced toward the living room.

"She saw the folder."

Robert answered, "Then get it back."

Margaret sat down heavily.

Daniel looked at his father.

Robert stared at the phone.

"What folder?"

No one answered.

Daniel returned to the recording.

A few minutes later Claire could be seen helping Noah place candles in the cake.

Rachel approached from behind.

Her expression looked completely different from the one she had worn afterward.

Not angry.

Not impulsive.

Focused.

She looked toward Robert.

Robert gave the smallest nod.

Then Rachel shoved Claire.

Claire hit the table.

Children screamed.

The cake collapsed.

Rachel immediately pointed.

"You ruined his fucking birthday, you pathetic bitch!"

A few guests looked sick.

Daniel froze the video.

The frame showed Robert in the background.

Watching.

Not surprised.

Watching.

Claire had not noticed that before.

Daniel did.

"You knew."

Robert's mouth tightened.

"You've been gone three days. You don't know what's been happening."

Daniel turned to Claire.

"Do you?"

Claire nodded.

"I know enough."

Rachel folded her arms.

"She broke into your father's study."

"No," Claire said. "I went looking for the deed to Grandma's cottage."

Robert's face hardened.

Daniel frowned.

"Why?"

Claire looked at her mother.

Margaret stared at the floor.

"Because Mom told me Dad was planning to sell it."

Daniel looked at Margaret.

"Is that true?"

Margaret whispered, "I didn't know what else to do."

Robert snapped, "Margaret."

She flinched.

That single movement changed Daniel's expression.

Claire saw her brother notice what she had noticed six months ago.

Their mother was afraid of their father.

Not irritated.

Not submissive out of habit.

Afraid.

Claire continued.

"I found a locked drawer open."

Rachel interrupted.

"Because you picked the lock."

"It was already open."

"Convenient."

Inside the drawer Claire had found a dark blue folder.

The first document had been a refinance agreement for Margaret's late mother's cottage.

The signature at the bottom belonged to Margaret.

Except Claire knew her mother's handwriting.

The signature was wrong.

Underneath it were three insurance policies.

Then a bank statement.

Then another.

Payments had moved through an account Claire had never seen.

Every month.

For eleven years.

Some payments went to Rachel.

Others went to a company called North Hollow Consulting.

Claire had photographed several pages.

Then she heard footsteps.

She had hidden behind the study curtain.

Rachel entered.

Robert came behind her.

Claire had expected them to discuss money.

Instead Rachel said something Claire still heard every time she closed her eyes.

"If Daniel finds out what happened to Anna, none of the money matters."

At the birthday party, Daniel's face changed.

"Anna?"

Claire nodded.

Daniel looked confused.

"Who the hell is Anna?"

Margaret began crying.

Robert shouted, "Enough."

Daniel stepped toward him.

"No. Not enough."

Claire reached into her dress pocket.

Rachel's eyes widened.

But Claire only removed a small key.

"The folder had this taped inside the back cover."

Robert stared at it.

The key was brass.

Old.

A paper tag was tied around it.

On the tag was a handwritten number.

17.

Noah looked at it and whispered something.

Claire turned.

"What did you say?"

The boy pointed at the key.

"Mom has one."

Rachel stopped moving.

Daniel looked at his wife.

"Where?"

Noah's lip trembled.

"In the red box."

Rachel moved for the stairs.

Daniel blocked her again.

"What red box?"

Noah answered.

"The one under Mommy's closet."

Rachel's voice became desperate.

"Noah, stop talking."

Daniel handed the phone to Claire.

"Take him outside."

Robert moved.

"Nobody is leaving."

Daniel turned toward his father.

For years Daniel had been the peaceful Bennett.

The one who ended arguments.

The one who made jokes at Christmas when Robert became impossible.

The one who had built a career in construction management two states away partly because distance made the Bennett family easier to survive.

Now something had changed.

"Move."

Robert did not.

Daniel stepped closer.

"I'm not asking."

Robert moved.

Claire took Noah's hand.

Margaret stood.

"I'm coming."

Robert glared at her.

"You sit down."

Margaret froze.

Daniel turned toward his mother.

"Mom."

She looked at him.

"Go with Claire."

Something passed across Margaret's face.

Terror.

Then relief.

She followed them.

When Claire reached the front hallway, Rachel called after her.

"You don't know what you're doing."

Claire stopped.

Rachel's eyes were no longer arrogant.

They were terrified.

Claire looked at her.

"No. But you do."

Outside, the October air was cold.

Noah pressed himself against Claire's side.

Margaret closed the door behind them.

For several seconds none of them spoke.

Then Noah whispered, "Aunt Claire?"

"Yeah?"

"Mom said Anna was a bad girl."

Margaret made a sound like she had been struck.

Claire slowly looked at her mother.

"Who was Anna?"

May you like

Margaret began to shake.

And Claire realized the answer was going to be worse than anything she had imagined.
