Chapter 2 - The Girl Nobody Mentioned)

Margaret did not answer until they were inside Claire's car.
Claire sat in the passenger seat because her injured leg could not safely operate the pedals.
Noah sat in the back.
Margaret took the driver's seat but did not start the engine.
Her hands rested on the steering wheel.
"Anna Bennett was your sister."
Claire stared at her.
Nothing moved inside the car.
Noah sniffed softly behind them.
Claire thought she had misheard.
"My what?"
"Your sister."
"I have one brother."
Margaret closed her eyes.
"You had another sister."
Claire felt suddenly cold.
"Had?"
Margaret nodded.
"She died before you were born."
Claire looked toward the house.
Daniel was still inside with Robert and Rachel.
"Why have I never heard her name?"
Margaret stared through the windshield.
"Because your father decided we were never going to speak about her again."
"What happened?"
Margaret's fingers tightened around the steering wheel.
"She was seven."
Claire's breath caught.
"Seven?"
"You were born almost four years later."
Margaret's voice had become distant.
"There was an accident."
Claire remembered Rachel's words from the study.
If Daniel finds out what happened to Anna.
"An accident where?"
"At the old cottage."
Claire looked at the brass key.
The cottage belonged to Margaret's mother before her death.
Claire had spent childhood summers there.
Daniel had too.
It stood near Lake Briar, forty miles north of town.
A small white house surrounded by pine trees.
There had always been one locked structure on the property.
A storage building behind the cottage.
Robert called it dangerous and forbade the children from entering.
Claire looked at the number 17 on the tag.
"Was Anna at Grandma's cottage?"
Margaret nodded.
"She fell down the cellar stairs."
Claire watched her mother.
Something was wrong.
Margaret would not meet her eyes.
"That's not the whole story."
"No."
"Did Dad hurt her?"
Margaret's head snapped toward Claire.
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
Claire waited.
Margaret's eyes filled.
"I don't know."
Claire felt anger rising.
"What do you mean you don't know?"
"I wasn't there."
"Who was?"
Margaret whispered, "Robert."
The front door opened.
Daniel came outside.
Rachel was behind him screaming.
"You can't take my son!"
Daniel ignored her and walked toward the car.
Robert remained in the doorway.
"Daniel!"
Daniel opened the rear door.
"Noah, you're coming with me."
Rachel rushed down the steps.
"You don't get to kidnap my child."
Daniel looked at her.
"He's my child too."
"He stays here."
"No."
Rachel tried to grab the door.
Daniel closed it.
She slammed her palm against the window.
"Noah!"
The boy shrank back.
Daniel's face hardened.
"Stop frightening him."
Rachel pointed at Claire.
"This is her fault!"
Daniel walked around the vehicle.
"Claire didn't make you shove her."
"She was threatening us."
"With what?"
Rachel stopped.
Daniel stared at her.
"Exactly."
He got into the driver's seat.
Margaret moved to the passenger seat beside Claire in the back.
Claire whispered, "What happened?"
Daniel started the engine.
"I found the red box."
He placed it on Claire's lap.
It was a narrow metal cash box.
Locked.
Claire held up the brass key.
Daniel looked at it.
"Try it."
The key turned.
Inside were photographs.
Receipts.
A flash drive.
A second brass key.
And a folded newspaper clipping from twenty-nine years earlier.
Claire opened it.
LOCAL GIRL DIES IN TRAGIC FALL
Anna Bennett, seven, had died after what the article described as an accidental fall at her grandmother's summer property.
The clipping quoted Robert.
It did not quote Margaret.
Claire flipped it over.
Someone had written three words on the back.
She didn't fall.
Daniel read them.
His face emptied.
"Whose handwriting?"
Margaret stared.
"I don't know."
Claire pulled out a photograph.
Anna stood outside the cottage.
Seven years old.
Dark hair.
A gap between her front teeth.
Daniel leaned closer.
"She looks like Noah."
Margaret began sobbing.
Daniel looked at her through the mirror.
"Mom."
She covered her mouth.
"I wanted to tell you."
"Tell me what?"
Margaret shook her head.
"I was twenty-eight. Robert handled everything. The police said it was an accident. Your grandmother begged me to leave him. I didn't."
Claire touched her mother's arm.
"Why not?"
Margaret laughed bitterly through tears.
"Because I was scared. Because Daniel was four. Because I had no money. Because people are very good at explaining away the thing they are most afraid to believe."
Daniel stared at the road.
"You thought Dad killed her?"
Margaret whispered, "I thought he might have."
Noah began crying harder.
Daniel immediately softened.
"Buddy, you're okay."
Noah wiped his face.
"Did Grandpa hurt the girl?"
Nobody knew what to say.
Then Noah added, "Mom said Grandpa didn't mean to."
Daniel nearly drove onto the shoulder.
He pulled over.
"What?"
Noah looked frightened.
Daniel turned carefully.
"When did Mommy say that?"
"Last night."
Claire's heart started racing.
"Where?"
"At Grandma's house."
Rachel had brought Noah over while Daniel was traveling.
Noah said he had awakened because he wanted water.
He heard voices downstairs.
His mother.
Robert.
They were in the study.
Rachel had said, "You didn't mean to kill Anna."
Robert answered, "Keep your voice down."
Then Noah heard another sentence.
One he had not understood.
"Claire found the medical report."
Claire looked through the red box.
At the bottom was a yellow envelope.
It was empty.
On the front, in faded ink, were the words:
ANNA BENNETT - ST. JOSEPH MEDICAL CENTER
The medical report was gone.
Daniel looked toward the road behind them.
Rachel's car had just pulled out of the driveway.
It turned north.
Margaret whispered, "The cottage."
Daniel pressed the accelerator.
Claire grabbed the door handle.
"What are you doing?"
"Finding out where she's going."
"With Noah in the car?"
Daniel hesitated.
Claire was right.
He pulled into a gas station.
"Mom, take Noah home with you."
Margaret nodded.
Noah grabbed Daniel's jacket.
"Dad."
Daniel crouched.
"I'll be back."
"Mom's mad."
"I know."
"Don't let her hurt Aunt Claire."
Daniel looked at his son.
Something broke quietly inside him.
He kissed Noah's forehead.
"Never again."
Margaret drove away with Noah in Claire's car.
Daniel and Claire followed Rachel north.
Twenty minutes later, the city disappeared behind them.
Pine trees closed around the highway.
Rachel remained three cars ahead.
Neither sibling spoke.
Then Claire's phone rang.
Unknown number.
She answered.
A woman's voice said, "Is this Claire Bennett?"
"Yes."
"My name is Susan Hale. You don't know me."
Claire glanced at Daniel.
The woman continued.
"But I knew Anna."
Claire stopped breathing.
May you like
Susan's next words changed everything.
"Your sister didn't die at the cottage."
