Chapter 4 - The Room Beneath the Cottage)

Daniel called the police.

Rachel begged him not to.

When that failed, she tried to leave.

Daniel took her car keys.

Within forty minutes, Lake Briar Road filled with patrol vehicles.

The small cottage became a crime scene.

Detectives photographed the hidden room.

Forensic technicians collected fibers, rust samples, old wood fragments, and pieces of paper wedged beneath the bed frame.

Claire sat on the porch under a blanket while a paramedic cleaned her injured knee.

Her original leg injury had happened three weeks earlier after a fall at work.

Now the pain was worse.

Detective Laura Mendez sat beside her.

"What made you come here?"

Claire told her everything.

The party.

The red box.

The hospital file.

Susan Hale's call.

Rachel burning documents.

Mendez listened without interrupting.

When Claire finished, she looked toward Rachel.

Rachel sat in a patrol car but had not yet been arrested.

"Your sister-in-law claims she discovered the hidden room four months ago."

Claire stared.

"Four months?"

"She says Robert showed it to her."

"Why?"

"That's what we're trying to determine."

Claire looked toward Daniel.

He stood near the lake talking with another detective.

"Does Daniel know?"

"Not yet."

Mendez lowered her voice.

"Rachel also says your father told her Anna survived."

Claire's pulse jumped.

"Survived what?"

"The injuries."

"Then where did she go?"

"Rachel says she doesn't know."

Claire laughed bitterly.

"Rachel always knows exactly enough to save herself."

Mendez watched her.

"You don't trust her."

"Would you?"

The detective did not answer.

That evening Robert Bennett was brought to the cottage.

He had refused to come voluntarily.

When officers showed him photographs of the underground room, he stopped cooperating.

He requested a lawyer.

Margaret arrived later with Noah.

Daniel immediately objected to bringing the boy near the scene, but Margaret said Noah had refused to stay with anyone else.

Claire understood.

His world had changed within hours.

He did not want to lose sight of the people he trusted.

Daniel crouched beside him.

"You did a brave thing today."

Noah looked uncertain.

"Mom's in trouble."

Daniel's face tightened.

"Adults sometimes make choices that have consequences."

"Does she still love me?"

Daniel closed his eyes for half a second.

"Yes."

Claire watched him.

Daniel was furious with Rachel.

But he would not punish Noah with that anger.

It reminded Claire why she had come to the birthday party even after everything Rachel had done the night before.

Noah mattered.

Children always mattered.

Perhaps that was the thing Robert had forgotten long ago.

Margaret refused to enter the hidden room.

She stood outside the storage building staring at the open trapdoor.

"I never knew."

Claire believed her.

Not completely.

But more than before.

Margaret said Robert always disappeared for several weekends every summer.

He claimed he was fishing.

Sometimes he brought a friend named Victor.

"Victor who?" Mendez asked.

Margaret struggled to remember.

"Hale, maybe."

Susan Hale's surname.

Claire felt the connection immediately.

Mendez did too.

Susan's father had owned the property across the lake.

Was Victor related?

A records search answered the question two hours later.

Victor Hale had been Susan's uncle.

He died twelve years earlier.

Occupation: psychiatric nurse.

Former employer: St. Joseph Medical Center.

The same hospital where Anna had been treated.

Daniel stared at the information on Mendez's tablet.

"You're telling me a psychiatric nurse helped my father?"

"We don't know that."

"His name is connected to the hospital and the lake."

"That's not proof."

Rachel spoke from behind them.

"It is."

Everyone turned.

She had finally agreed to talk without a lawyer.

Mendez warned her again that anything she said could be used against her.

Rachel nodded.

"Victor helped Robert hide Anna."

Margaret whispered, "Hide her where?"

Rachel looked at Robert.

He stood near the police vehicle, guarded by an officer.

"He told me Anna didn't die that night."

Claire's voice shook.

"Then why was there a funeral?"

Rachel swallowed.

"Because there was a body."

The world seemed to tilt.

Daniel stepped forward.

"What body?"

Rachel looked terrified.

"I don't know her name."

Mendez stared at her.

"A different child?"

Rachel nodded.

Margaret collapsed.

Claire caught her before she hit the ground.

"No."

Margaret shook violently.

"No. No, that's impossible."

Rachel began crying.

"Robert said Victor had access to a girl from the hospital."

"What girl?" Daniel demanded.

"I don't know."

"What happened to Anna?"

Rachel looked toward the woods.

"Robert said Victor took her somewhere."

"Where?"

"I don't know."

Daniel's control cracked.

"You knew this for four months and said nothing?"

Rachel shouted back.

"Because your father said if I went to the police, Daniel would lose everything."

Daniel stared at her.

"My job?"

"Everything."

She looked at Noah.

Daniel went still.

"He threatened my son?"

Rachel nodded.

But Claire noticed something.

Rachel was crying.

Her fear seemed real.

Still, one detail did not fit.

"If you were terrified of Robert," Claire said, "why were you helping him yesterday?"

Rachel looked at her.

"Because I thought you found the list."

"What list?"

Rachel immediately regretted the words.

Mendez heard them.

"What list, Rachel?"

Rachel remained silent.

Detective Mendez stepped closer.

"What list?"

Rachel finally whispered, "The children."

Claire felt ice move through her veins.

"Which children?"

May you like

Rachel looked toward the hidden room.

"The ones who were taken after Anna."
