Chapter 5 - The Mother in the Photograph

Claire placed the strip of film on the glass table.

"Who is she?"

Nobody answered.

The timer continued.

Four minutes and thirty-two seconds.

Detective Vale gripped Thomas by the arm. "You will explain this now."

Thomas looked at Evelyn.

Evelyn stared at the floor.

Daniel broke first.

"I knew," he said.

Claire turned slowly.

Daniel's expression held no triumph. Only shame.

"Not everything," he continued. "I found letters after Dad's funeral. They said you were brought here in 1991."

"I was born in 1991."

"You were brought here six months after your birth."

Claire's legs felt weak, but she refused to sit.

Thomas spoke quietly.

"The woman in the photograph was Anna Mercer."

The name meant nothing to Claire.

Anna had worked as an investigative reporter in Chicago. She spent three years studying financial corruption around the lake, including suspicious land transfers linked to Silas Bennett and later to Thomas.

She disappeared after giving birth.

"What happened to her?" Claire asked.

Thomas looked toward the BENNETT cabinet.

"The answer is in there."

The timer reached three minutes.

Vale ordered everyone back from the table.

Claire placed her palm on the scanner. The system illuminated two buttons.

PRESERVE PUBLIC

PRESERVE BENNETT

Thomas stepped forward. "Claire, listen to me. The public archive contains evidence against men who are still dangerous. If you destroy it, they walk free."

Evelyn said, "The Bennett archive proves your father helped some of those men."

Thomas glared at her.

Daniel tugged against his cuffs. "There has to be another way."

Claire looked at the pocket watch.

A third symbol.

She pressed the crown again. Nothing happened.

Then she remembered her grandmother's music box. Four notes. The same melody as the keypad.

Claire tapped the rhythm on the glass.

The table split open.

Beneath the two choice buttons was a mechanical lever labeled RELEASE ALL.

Thomas lunged.

Vale stopped him.

Claire pulled the lever.

Alarms screamed throughout the chamber.

Every cabinet unlocked.

The countdown disappeared.

Thomas stared at her in horror.

"What have you done?"

A printer began feeding pages into metal trays. Servers hummed behind the walls. Files were copied automatically to a remote location displayed on the main screen.

DESTINATION: MERCER ARCHIVE

Claire looked at Vale.

"Can you trace it?"

He nodded. "Already trying."

Evelyn laughed through her tears.

Thomas turned on her. "You knew about the third option."

"I helped your mother build it."

Officer Ruiz opened the BENNETT cabinet.

Inside were dozens of red folders, each labeled with a year. He pulled the one marked 1991.

Claire took it.

The first pages contained hospital records for a newborn female listed as Clara Mercer. The birth date matched Claire's.

A second document recorded Anna Mercer's admission to a private clinic owned by one of Thomas's shell companies.

The final page was a death certificate.

Cause of death: accidental drowning.

Body recovered: no.

Claire's hands trembled.

A cassette tape rested beneath the papers.

Vale found an old recorder in the cabinet and pressed play.

A woman's voice filled the chamber.

"If Thomas tells my daughter I abandoned her, he is lying."

Claire stopped breathing.

"I found evidence that Silas Bennett arranged the deaths of three witnesses. Thomas promised to help me expose him. Then Thomas discovered the archive and decided to keep it. I am leaving this recording because I no longer know whether he is protecting me or imprisoning me."

The tape crackled.

A sound came from the background.

A baby crying.

Anna continued.

"Evelyn agreed to take Claire if I disappear. She believes she can protect her. I pray she is right."

The recording ended.

Claire looked at Evelyn.

"You raised me because she asked you to?"

Evelyn shook her head.

"At first."

"At first?"

"I loved you."

Claire's voice broke. "And later?"

Evelyn looked toward Thomas.

"Later, he made us all afraid of what you might remember."

Claire stared at her father.

"What could a baby remember?"

Thomas said nothing.

The main screen suddenly flashed.

REMOTE ACCESS DETECTED

The copied files were being opened from outside the property.

Vale checked the destination trace.

His expression changed.

"The Mercer Archive is not a building."

"What is it?" Claire asked.

"A person."

The screen displayed a live connection.

MERCER, ANNA

STATUS: ACTIVE

Claire stared at the name.

Her mother was alive.

And she had just received every secret the Bennett family had ever buried.

The cottage contained no family photographs of Anna herself. Every image centered on Claire, as though Anna had erased her own life to document her daughter's. In a locked drawer, police found unsent birthday cards.

The first was for Claire's fifth birthday.

The final card had been written two weeks earlier.

Claire opened it.

My dearest Clara,

Thirty-five is the age when Thomas believes memory becomes a weapon. He is wrong. Memory becomes a choice. When the house calls you home, do not choose between the archives. Find the witness who was never given a name.

Claire folded the card carefully.

Vale studied the phrase.

"The witness who was never given a name could be the fifteenth child."

Claire thought of the active Mercer connection and the figure at the boathouse.

Outside the cottage, Officer Ruiz found footprints leading into the lake. They stopped where the water reached waist height. No return prints appeared.

A diver searched beneath the dock and discovered a submerged hatch connected to an air-filled tunnel.

Anna had not escaped by road.

She had crossed beneath the lake while police crossed above it.

May you like

On the tunnel wall, someone had painted a single word.

LUCY.
