Chapter 13 - The House Chooses Again

Northstar locked the federal agents in the east wing and disabled outside communications.
Adrian Cross offered Claire ten minutes.
Give him the encryption key, and he would allow Anna, Daniel, Evelyn, and Melissa to leave.
Refuse, and Northstar would kill one person every five minutes until the key was surrendered.
Claire looked around the library.
Her family had lied, stolen, manipulated, and betrayed one another for decades.
Yet Cross believed their worst acts made them disposable.
He was wrong.
Claire asked to speak with Lucy alone.
Cross allowed it because he believed fear would do his work.
They entered the hidden vault beneath the library.
Lucy stood near the glass table where the original choice had appeared.
"Did you work for him?" Claire asked.
"Yes."
"Did you help Northstar find people?"
"Yes."
"Did anyone die because of you?"
Lucy looked away.
"Yes."
Claire absorbed the answer.
"Why should I trust you?"
"You should not."
"Then give me the key."
Lucy laughed bitterly.
"So you can become the responsible sister? The good daughter? The clean face of the same family?"
"So I can end the countdown."
"And save Cross."
"No. So I can choose what happens after."
Lucy studied her.
"You still believe choices are real."
Claire placed the silver pocket watch on the table.
"The third choice was real."
"Because Grandmother built it."
"No. Because she understood people like Thomas would always offer two terrible options and call that freedom."
Lucy touched the watch.
For the first time, her anger weakened.
"I do not know how to stop being what they made me."
Claire answered honestly.
"Neither do I."
Above them, a gunshot echoed.
Five minutes had passed.
They ran upstairs.
Officer Ruiz lay wounded near the staircase. Cross stood beside him, checking his watch.
"One casualty," he said. "Nine minutes remain."
Claire knelt beside Ruiz. The bullet had struck his vest, but he pretended to be unconscious.
His hand closed around hers.
He slipped her a small key.
The kitchen service door.
Vale and the federal team were preparing to move.
Claire stood.
"I will give you the encryption key."
Cross smiled.
Lucy stared at her.
Claire continued.
"But I want proof my family can leave."
Cross ordered his men to open the west doors.
Evelyn, Anna, Daniel, and Melissa were moved toward the terrace.
As they passed the kitchen, Claire gave Ruiz's key to Daniel.
Daniel understood.
At the terrace, he stumbled deliberately into a guard. Melissa screamed. Evelyn dropped to the floor. In the confusion, Anna opened the service door.
Vale's team entered from the pantry passage.
Gunfire erupted.
Claire dragged Lucy behind the stone fireplace.
Cross ran toward the hidden vault.
"He knows the release controls," Lucy shouted.
They followed.
In the chamber, Cross connected the black device to the server.
The countdown showed four minutes.
Claire reached for the cable.
Cross struck her across the face.
Lucy attacked him with her brace.
He shoved her against the glass table and drew a gun.
Thomas's voice came from the stairway.
"Adrian."
Cross turned.
Thomas stood between two federal guards, one arm bleeding. He had apparently been brought back to identify Northstar personnel and escaped during the assault.
"You always did arrive when the work was finished," Cross said.
Thomas looked at Claire.
"Pull the brass lever."
Cross fired.
Thomas took the bullet in his chest.
Claire pulled the lever.
Every cabinet opened.
Sprinklers activated, but instead of water they released thick white fire suppressant. Visibility vanished.
Claire heard Cross coughing.
Lucy grabbed her hand.
They reached the server panel together.
"Key," Claire said.
Lucy hesitated.
The timer reached twenty seconds.
Claire held out her palm.
Lucy gave her a small silver drive.
Claire inserted it.
The screen displayed three options.
RELEASE ALL
DESTROY ALL
TRANSFER AUTHORITY
Claire chose the third.
The system requested a recipient.
She entered a name.
MERCER-BENNETT INDEPENDENT REVIEW COURT
The timer reached zero.
For one terrible second, nothing happened.
Then the screen changed.
TRANSFER COMPLETE.
Cross screamed from somewhere in the fog.
"You have no idea who sits on that court."
Claire looked at Lucy.
He might be right.
But the files were no longer controlled by Thomas, Lucy, Cross, or Claire.
The house had finally lost its power.
Or so she believed.
In the weeks after the archive transfer, Claire attended closed hearings where victims described the cost of secrets stored without their consent. One woman had lost custody of her child because Thomas hid evidence against her husband. A retired officer confessed that Silas paid him to abandon a witness at the edge of the lake.
Not every story offered a clean villain.
Some people had committed crimes after being threatened. Others had accepted protection and later tried to escape. The archive contained truth, but truth did not arrange itself into justice.
Claire proposed a restitution fund using seized Bennett and Northstar assets. Daniel surrendered his company shares. Evelyn signed over her remaining property. Anna contributed the rights to her investigation.
Lucy refused.
"Money is how they teach people to call a wound closed," she said.
Claire did not argue.
Instead, she invited Lucy to every hearing.
Lucy attended only one. She sat in the back and left before the end.
Days later, an anonymous transfer appeared in the restitution account.
The amount matched every dollar Lucy had earned from Northstar.

Claire never thanked her.
Some apologies were more honest when allowed to remain unnamed.
