Chapter 15 - The Child in the Locked House

Claire, Lucy, and Vale reached the lake house in eleven minutes.
The front door was locked.
The security code no longer worked.
Through the glass, the library lights flickered in the four-note rhythm.
Vale called for backup.
Claire did not wait.
She used the old brass key Thomas had carried across the lake.
The lock opened.
Inside, the house smelled of smoke.
The boy from the camera stood at the end of the hallway. He appeared eight or nine years old, with dark hair and a pale face.
He wore a gray coat too large for him.
"Who are you?" Claire asked.
The boy looked at Lucy.
"She knows."
Lucy went rigid.
"No."
The boy lifted the pocket watch.
"Mother said you would pretend."
Claire turned to her sister.
"Lucy?"
Lucy stepped backward.
"I never had a child."
The boy smiled.
"I did not say you were my mother."
He ran toward the pantry.
Vale followed, but the shelf had already closed behind him.
Claire entered the code.
The hidden passage opened.
They descended into the underground corridor.
At the steel door, the boy waited.
"Where did you get the watch?" Claire asked.
"From Grandmother."
Anna had never mentioned a grandchild.
The boy placed the watch against the keypad.
A new door opened in the stone wall.
Behind it was a tunnel none of them had seen.
Fresh lights glowed along the ceiling.
The boy walked inside.
Claire followed.
The tunnel ended beneath the lake in a circular chamber lined with mirrors.
At the center stood a hospital bed.
A woman lay beneath a white sheet.
Anna.
Claire rushed to her.
Anna was alive but unconscious. A medical line ran into her arm. On the floor beside the bed sat a black case bearing the Northstar symbol.
Vale checked her pulse.
"She has been sedated."
Lucy faced the boy.
"Who brought her here?"
The boy looked toward one of the mirrors.
A speaker activated.
Thomas's voice filled the chamber.
"Claire, if you are hearing this, Adrian Cross was never the highest authority."
Claire searched for the source.
The recording continued.
"Silas built the archive for a council called the Keepers. Cross managed their legal interests. Northstar managed enforcement. I spent my life trying to control what could not be destroyed."
Lucy laughed bitterly.
"He is still lying."
Thomas's voice answered as if the recording had anticipated her.
"Lucia will call this a lie."
Lucy stopped.
"She remembers the fire, but not what happened before it."
Claire looked at her sister.
The mirrors brightened.
Images appeared across them.
Children in hospital rooms.
Judges entering tunnels.
Thomas carrying infant Claire.
Anna carrying Lucy.
And a third newborn in Evelyn's arms.
Claire stared.
"There were three."
The boy stood beside the image.
Thomas continued.
"Anna gave birth to twins. Evelyn gave birth the same night."
Claire turned toward Vale.
"Evelyn had a child?"
The recording showed a medical chart.
Baby Bennett.
Male.
Status unknown.
The boy touched the mirror.
"My father."
Claire tried to understand.
"Who is your father?"
The chamber door locked behind them.
Vale raised his weapon.
The boy looked at Claire with eyes that suddenly seemed far older than his face.
"Daniel Bennett."
Claire froze.
Daniel had never mentioned a son beyond the two children he shared with Melissa.
The boy shook his head.
"Not your Daniel."
One mirror changed.
It displayed a photograph of two infant boys.
Both labeled Daniel.
Lucy whispered, "Identity replacement."
The same method used with Peter Voss and Silas.
Thomas's voice continued.
"The Bennett family you know was built from substitutions. Names passed from the dead to the living. Children exchanged to protect bloodlines and secrets. The Keepers did not preserve people. They preserved roles."
Anna stirred on the bed.
Her eyes opened.
She saw the boy and began to struggle.
"No," she gasped. "You brought him here?"
Claire held her shoulders.
"Who is he?"
Anna looked toward the locked door.
"The last heir."
A red light activated above the mirrors.
Vale's radio filled with static.
The boy opened the black case.
Inside were fifteen silver drives.
One for every child in the archive.
He removed the drive marked CLAIRE.
"You transferred the files to a court," he said. "But courts are only rooms full of names."
He inserted the drive into the chamber console.
Every mirror displayed a different live location.
A judge's home.
A police station.
A hospital.
Daniel's prison cell.
Evelyn's detention room.
Thomas's hospital bed.
And the lake house library above them.
People in each location turned toward unseen cameras.
Claire realized the feeds were live.
The Keepers were watching all of them.
The boy pressed one button.
A new countdown began.
Twenty-four hours.
"What happens when it reaches zero?" Claire asked.
The boy looked at Anna.
Anna closed her eyes.
Lucy gripped Claire's hand.
The boy smiled.
"Then the real family comes home."
The lights went out.
Beneath the darkness, someone knocked from inside the mirrors.
Once.
Twice.
Three times.

And a woman's voice, identical to Claire's, whispered from the other side.
"Do not trust Lucy."
