Chapter 12 - The Trial Before the Trial

Thomas was taken to a federal facility.
This time, nobody allowed him near a key, a wire, or a glass of water without inspection.
The lake house became a command center.
Federal agents arrived. Prosecutors sealed the property. Technology experts worked through the remaining servers while reporters gathered at the gate.
Claire sat in the library with Anna and Lucy.
It was the first time the three of them had been alone.
Anna told the story without asking forgiveness.
After the hospital fire, Thomas escaped with Claire. Anna fled with Lucy through a tunnel that collapsed behind them. Lucy's right leg was crushed.
For years, Anna moved between safe houses. She believed Thomas's allies would kill both girls if they were reunited. She sent messages to Evelyn, but Evelyn answered only once.
Claire is safe. Stay away.
Anna obeyed until she realized Thomas had continued the conditioning program.
By then, Lucy was old enough to understand what had happened.
Anger became her education.
"Did you teach her to hack the archive?" Claire asked.
Anna looked at Lucy.
"I taught her to find evidence."
"I taught myself what to do with it," Lucy said.
Daniel entered with Officer Ruiz.
He had agreed to cooperate in exchange for consideration at sentencing.
He placed a folder on the table.
"I found this in Dad's office two years ago."
It contained payments from the Bennett company to a private security firm called Northstar Civic Solutions.
Vale recognized the name.
Northstar employed retired police officers, courthouse staff, and former federal agents. Several had access to the evidence archive used to fabricate Daniel's deed.
The company had also paid for Thomas's staged car crash.
Claire examined the director's name.
Adrian Cross.
She had met him.
He attended Thomas's funeral and offered condolences.
Vale searched the Mercer files.
Adrian Cross appeared repeatedly as a young attorney working for Silas Bennett. He had signed the original transfer documents for St. Agnes Hospital.
"He is older than he looks," Anna said.
"How old?" Claire asked.
"At least seventy."
The man Claire remembered appeared fifty.
Lucy leaned back.
"Cross is the reason I built the mass release. Courts cannot contain people like him."
"Then we release the verified case against him," Claire replied.
"He owns judges."
"Not all of them."
"He owns enough."
The argument ended when the power failed.
Backup generators activated, but the front gates opened automatically.
Black vehicles entered the property.
Northstar personnel in tactical uniforms surrounded the house before federal agents could establish positions.
Adrian Cross walked through the front door without a weapon.
He wore the same calm smile he had worn at the funeral.
"Claire," he said, "your father always underestimated you."
Vale aimed his gun.
Cross ignored him.
"I am here to purchase the archive."
Lucy laughed. "With what?"
"Freedom."
He offered immunity routes, new identities, and enough money for everyone to disappear.
Daniel asked, "And if we refuse?"
Cross looked toward the windows.
"Then this property becomes the site of a tragic family confrontation."
Claire understood that Northstar had already prepared the public story.
Cross approached the library table.
"The files contain allegations against powerful people. Some guilty. Some innocent. Once released, there is no distinction."
"Then help us distinguish them," Claire said.
"I did not survive this long by helping truth."
The countdown on Lucy's phone showed forty-one minutes.
Cross noticed.
"You cannot stop it."
"No," Lucy said.
"But I can."
Cross placed a black device on the table.
According to him, it would destroy the remote servers by exploiting a flaw in the Mercer encryption.
Anna stared at it.
"How do you know the system?"
Cross smiled.
"Because I paid for it."
Lucy went still.
Cross looked at Claire.
"Your sister did not build the archive alone."
Claire turned toward Lucy.
For the first time, Lucy seemed afraid.
Cross continued.
"She has worked for Northstar since she was nineteen."
Anna whispered, "Lucia?"
Lucy looked at her mother.
"I needed access."
"You helped him?"
"I used him."
Cross laughed.
"That is what Thomas said about Silas."
The countdown reached thirty-five minutes.
Claire realized the final threat was not a stranger at the door.
It was the possibility that Lucy had become the very person she claimed to punish.
During the standoff, Melissa found Claire near the terrace and pressed a small memory card into her hand.
"I copied Cross's phone while he was talking to Daniel," she whispered.
The card contained a list of Northstar emergency protocols. One was labeled BENNETT SUCCESSION.
If Thomas died or lost control, authority passed not to Daniel or Claire, but to a council representative identified only as CUSTODIAN M.
Claire wondered whether M meant Mercer.
The protocol included the lake house floor plans, including the concealed pantry route Ruiz later used.
Melissa had known how to help sooner, but fear held her silent until Cross threatened her children.
"I spent years telling myself I was protecting my family," she said. "Mostly I was protecting the life I wanted."
Claire replied, "Then help us protect them now."
Melissa triggered the west-door alarm, creating the distraction that allowed Vale's team to enter.

It did not erase what she had done.
But it became the first act in the house that was not demanded by a hidden test, a threat, or a promise of inheritance.
