Chapter 8 - The Voice Beneath the Stage

No one moved.

Lucia's words struck the hall with more force than a gunshot. Mateo stared at the dark opening beneath the stage. Camila's face changed, not to surprise but to fury.

"Beatriz," she snapped. "Close it."

Beatriz stepped toward the panel. Mateo threw the pen at her eyes. She flinched. He overturned the table and drove into her before the pistol steadied. The gun fired into the ceiling.

Mercer ran for the side door. Voss dropped to the floor. Camila seized the velvet bag and pulled the swan free.

Mateo wrestled Beatriz's wrist against the boards. She fought with desperate strength, whispering, "You don't understand. She has my son."

Before he could answer, the lights died.

Rafael's team had cut the academy power.

Emergency lamps glowed red. Mateo took the pistol and kicked it beneath the stage. The hidden panel remained open. He descended the narrow steps, following the sound of water.

The passage ended in a circular chamber beneath the school chapel. A stone basin occupied the center. Sofia and Lucia stood behind an iron grille, their wrists tied with cloth. Beside them was a woman in a hospital gown, seated in a wheelchair.

For one impossible second, Mateo saw Valeria.

The same dark hair. The same profile. The same small scar near the eyebrow.

Then the woman raised her head.

She was older than Valeria, perhaps by ten years, and painfully thin.

"Daddy," Lucia said, "she sounds like Mommy."

The woman gripped the wheelchair arms. "My name is Adriana Cruz. Valeria was my sister."

Mateo had known Valeria as an only child.

Footsteps thundered above. Mateo cut the girls' bindings with a piece of broken metal. Sofia wrapped herself around him, but Lucia kept looking at Adriana.

"She sang the song," Lucia said. "She knew our names."

Adriana pointed toward the stone basin. "The place where the sun has no shadow. The seal is beneath the water, but removing it triggers the archive lock. Camila needs the girls' voices to open the chamber. Valeria designed it that way after she found me here."

"Found you?"

"I have been a patient, a witness, and a ghost for twenty years. Hector Alvarez kept records on everyone. I kept records on him."

A shot sounded in the passage. Rafael appeared, dragging Mercer by the collar. Behind him, Elena guided Isabel into the chamber. National investigators secured the upper hall, but Camila and the swan were gone.

Beatriz had surrendered. Dr. Voss was in custody. The fire timer had been disabled with thirty-seven minutes remaining.

Mateo should have felt relief. Instead, he watched Adriana touch Sofia's face with trembling fingers.

"Valeria told me you would come when the girls were hungry," Adriana said.

"Why did she hide you?"

"Because your father declared me dead. Because Mercer helped him erase my name. Because Camila learned that I still had the second half of the registry."

Rafael opened the iron grille. Investigators searched the chamber and found medical restraints, archived tapes, and a narrow tunnel leading toward the burned wing. Camila had escaped through it.

In the ambulance, Sofia and Lucia refused to let Mateo out of sight. Isabel sat with them. Adriana was taken under armed protection.

At dawn, Mateo stood outside St. Aurelia as officers led Beatriz away. She stopped beside him.

"Camila paid me," she said. "But the first order did not come from her."

"Who gave it?"

Beatriz looked toward Adriana's ambulance.

"Valeria."

Mateo seized her arm. "Valeria ordered you to starve her daughters?"

"Not starve. Test. She told me to remove one meal and watch who came through the garden. She believed someone inside the house was feeding information to your father’s old network. After the crash, Camila found my instructions and changed them. She threatened my son. I obeyed."

"Where is your son?"

Beatriz began to cry. "I don't know. Camila showed me videos. He may have been dead for months."

An investigator separated them.

Mateo returned to the mansion that afternoon. The nursery bars had been removed. Every hidden microphone was bagged as evidence. Sofia slept with her hand around his thumb. Lucia kept the enamel pot beside her bed.

At sunset, Rafael brought a recovered file from St. Aurelia.

After the rescue beneath the stage, Sofia refused a blanket until Adriana received one too. Lucia asked whether the thin woman had eaten. The questions shamed every adult in the chamber. Isabel opened a packet of crackers and divided it into equal portions, including one for herself, turning food into something shared rather than granted. Adriana ate slowly while watching the girls. She told them Valeria used to steal oranges from the academy kitchen and leave them beneath dormitory pillows. Sofia asked why her mother had never spoken about having a sister. Adriana replied that secrets begin as shelter and can become cages when kept too long. Mateo heard the sentence as a warning aimed at everyone. He decided that whatever else happened, his daughters would no longer be protected through lies they were forced to live inside.
