Chapter 13 - The Registry Opens
Mateo stepped into the opening beneath the basin as the countdown reached twenty-four. Rafael followed despite orders to remain above. Adriana came last, clutching the empty ribbon that had held the seal.
The chamber below was not an archive of paper. It was a circular machine room built around a column of glass. Inside the glass, hundreds of metal wafers were stacked like coins. The trust seal had locked into a slot at the base.
A console displayed three active signals: Sofia, Lucia, Mateo.
The girls' live voices traveled through the network. Mateo's pulse was being measured by sensors hidden in the stair rail and floor. Hector had designed the system to authenticate living family members without their consent.
At ten seconds, Rafael disconnected the chapel transmitter.
The countdown continued.
"It's local," he said. "The device is only a trigger."
Adriana searched the console. "If it reaches zero, the registry copies itself to Orpheus."
Mateo placed his hand on the glass column. The swan melody sounded from within it. His jaw ached where the childhood implant scar remained.
The screen asked a question.
WHO OWNS THE NAME?
Three answer fields appeared, one for each voice key.
On the video wall, Camila forced Sofia toward a microphone.
"Say 'the blood,'" she ordered.
Sofia shook her head.
Lucia began crying. Elena stirred on the floor.
Mateo spoke into the chamber microphone. "No one owns a name."
The system rejected him.
Adriana said, "Hector believed the family owned everything. The expected phrase is the blood."
"Then the system stays closed."
"If it copies, millions of secrets become leverage."
"If we answer, we open it for them ourselves."
The countdown reached three.
Sofia suddenly sang the lullaby backward.
Lucia joined her.
The console flickered. The question changed.
WHO FEEDS THE CHILD?
Mateo understood. Valeria had altered the authentication through the swan sequence. The answer was not about blood or ownership.
"The one who stays," Mateo said.
Sofia repeated, "The one who stays."
Lucia whispered the same words.
The countdown stopped at one.
The glass column opened.
Instead of copying outward, the registry began projecting files onto the walls. Hector's accounts. Bribes. Names of judges, ministers, doctors, and guardians. Evidence of forced commitments, stolen identities, and children moved through institutions like St. Aurelia.
One file was marked VEGA, ISABEL.
Isabel had not merely been a laundress. She had been the daughter of Hector's first accountant, the man who created the original registry and disappeared when Isabel was a child. Valeria chose her because she carried the final decryption phrase without knowing it: the one who stays.
Another file was marked TORRES, RAFAEL.
Rafael read it in silence. His father had worked for Orpheus and died during an attempt to extract Adriana. Rafael had been recruited into Mateo's security company so the network could monitor the Alvarez heir.
"I did not know," Rafael said.
Adriana touched his shoulder. "Your father tried to save me."
Above, gunfire erupted through the video feed. Elena had attacked Camila, knocking the pistol aside. Isabel entered the replica nursery with two guards. She pulled the girls away.
Camila reached for the black transmitter.
A masked Orpheus operative appeared behind her and fired once.
Camila fell.
The operative took the transmitter and looked into the camera.
"Thank you for opening the registry."
The chamber doors began to close.
Rafael fired into the mechanism, jamming one side. Mateo and Adriana squeezed through as alarms shook the chapel. They raced through the academy tunnels toward the foundation headquarters, guided by the girls' tracker.
When they reached the replica nursery, Camila was gone. Blood stained the floor, but there was no body. Elena had a fractured wrist. Isabel held Sofia and Lucia close.
"The masked man took Camila," Elena said. "He said she was still useful."
Mateo checked the registry connection. Most files remained sealed locally, but one packet had escaped before Sofia changed the code.
It contained a list titled CHILDREN OF ORPHEUS.
At the top were Sofia and Lucia.
Beneath their names was a third child.
Mateo Alvarez Jr.
When the system projected Hector's files, Mateo saw names from his own childhood: tutors, drivers, doctors, and family friends. Some had been paid to observe him. Others reported on Camila. A few had tried to alert authorities and then disappeared. One recording showed young Camila being punished for refusing to repeat a false story about Adriana. Another showed Hector praising her years later for learning that love was merely leverage with better manners. Mateo understood that Camila had been shaped by the same machine she later used against the twins. It did not excuse her choices, but it explained why she treated vulnerability as an invitation to control. The registry also contained Valeria's proposed restitution fund, designed to return hidden assets to victims. She had not wanted to destroy every record. She wanted to remove the power from private hands and put the evidence where no family could own it.
