Chapter 11 - Orpheus

The evidence-vault cameras showed no intruder. For eleven seconds, every frame repeated the same empty image. The vault lock recorded Mateo's fingerprint and retinal scan, though he had been in the nursery reading to Lucia.

Orpheus could copy credentials, faces, voices, and perhaps entire identities.

Rafael brought in a biometric specialist who discovered that the retinal scanner had been fed a prerecorded optical pattern through the maintenance port. The fingerprint came from a high-resolution mold. Whoever entered knew the system well enough to defeat safeguards Mateo's own engineers considered impossible.

The missing velvet bag seemed worthless, but Valeria had stitched a pattern into its lining. Under ultraviolet light, photographs revealed a map of the old city water system. Camila must have realized the swan's container mattered after escaping St. Aurelia.

One tunnel on the map led beneath the Alvarez Foundation headquarters.

Mateo and Rafael entered after midnight with a national tactical unit. The lower basement appeared ordinary until Sofia's altered lullaby sequence opened a freight elevator to a hidden level.

Below, they found a workshop of disguises and surveillance equipment. Silicone faces hung from metal frames. Voice models filled encrypted servers. Photographs of Mateo, Rafael, Camila, Valeria, and dozens of officials covered the walls.

At the center stood a replica of the mansion nursery.

The barred window, the rabbit camera, the beds, and even the scratches on the floor had been recreated with obsessive precision. Actors had rehearsed movements there. On a table lay scripts marked with emotional targets: fear, hunger, dependency, false memory.

Elena, reviewing the room by video, said, "They were conditioning the girls. Not simply starving them. Hunger makes memory unstable and suggestion more powerful."

Mateo opened a cabinet filled with recordings of children's voices. Some belonged to Sofia and Lucia. Others were unknown.

Rafael found files labeled ORPHEUS PROTOCOL. The program began under Hector Alvarez as a method for controlling witnesses and replacing couriers. Camila inherited part of it, but financial logs showed that Orpheus charged her for services. She was a client, not the leader.

A live terminal flickered on.

A masked figure appeared on the screen.

"Mateo Alvarez," a distorted voice said. "You found the rehearsal room."

"Where is Camila?"

"Where all failed clients go."

"You used my daughters."

"Your father used many daughters. Yours were simply valuable."

Mateo moved closer. "What do you want?"

"The door opened. Now we need what is behind it."

The screen displayed a scan of Mateo's childhood medical record. A note described an experimental cochlear implant removed when he was four after an infection. Mateo barely remembered the surgery.

"Hector embedded a cipher in the implant's calibration data," Orpheus said. "The registry requires the trust seal, the daughters' vocal key, and your neural response to the swan sequence. You are not a metaphorical door. You are the final authentication device."

Rafael whispered, "That is why the melody affects the system when you are present."

Mateo remembered the swan playing by itself at St. Aurelia. Sensors might have detected him.

"Camila never knew," Orpheus continued. "She believed she could force the girls to reveal the seal and then compel your signature. She was always incomplete."

"Show me her."

The screen changed. Camila sat in a bare room, her wrists chained to a table. Her confidence was gone.

"Mateo," she said, "do not give them anything."

He almost smiled at the absurdity. "You starved my children."

"And I will answer for it. But Orpheus killed Valeria. Mercer only damaged the car. Orpheus sent the vehicle over the barrier to erase her after she survived."

The masked figure returned.

"Bring the girls to the shadowless basin at midnight tomorrow," the voice said. "Bring Adriana and the trust seal. In exchange, Camila will be delivered alive, along with the original recording of Valeria's final warning."

"We don't have the seal."

"Adriana does. She removed it before your team entered St. Aurelia. Check the wheel of her chair."

The transmission ended.

Across the city, guards searched Adriana's hospital room.

Her wheelchair stood empty.

The replica nursery contained dozens of variations on the same scene. In one script, Isabel was portrayed as a kidnapper. In another, Mateo arrived drunk and shouted at the girls. In a third, Camila rescued them from a cruel father. The network had prepared competing realities and intended to choose whichever one produced the legal result it needed. Elena found scent dispensers loaded with Valeria's perfume and recordings of her footsteps. The girls had been exposed to these cues during hunger, teaching their bodies to associate confusion with their mother. Mateo ordered every script preserved for trial. He also ordered the replica left standing until Sofia and Lucia decided what should happen to it. Sofia later said she wanted the bars melted into playground swings. Lucia wanted the fake beds given to children who had none. Their answer transformed an instrument of control into a plan for repair.

Inside one wheel was a circular cavity.

The trust seal was gone.
