Chapter 12 - The Second Betrayal

Adriana left no sign of struggle. Hospital cameras showed her walking out in a nurse's uniform thirty minutes before the vault breach. Her injuries had been real, but her weakness had been partly performed.
On the pillow she left a note for Mateo.
Valeria asked me to protect the girls from Hector's registry. She did not ask me to protect the Alvarez name. Do not follow me.
Rafael traced her route to the train station, where cameras lost her among hundreds of passengers. Isabel was devastated.
"She suffered too long," Isabel said. "Perhaps she believes destroying the registry is worth any risk."
Mateo understood the desire. Hector's archive contained crimes, stolen wealth, and leverage over governments. Destroying it could free victims. Opening it could expose the truth. In the wrong hands, it could become a weapon larger than the family that created it.
Meanwhile, Sofia and Lucia were improving physically but began remembering fragments from the nights before Valeria's crash. Elena used careful, non-leading questions. Sofia recalled her mother hiding something inside the nursery wall. Lucia remembered a man who looked like Rafael but smelled of oranges.
Rafael never used cologne. Mercer did.
Under interrogation, Mercer admitted that Orpheus recruited him years before Camila did. He provided family schedules and legal documents. The man impersonating Rafael had been built from photographs, voice samples, and gait recordings Mercer supplied.
"Who leads Orpheus?" Mateo asked.
Mercer laughed bitterly. "No one person. That was Hector's genius. Cells know only performances. Every client believes there is a director. Every director answers to another mask."
"Where will Adriana go?"
"To the first archive."
The phrase led them to an abandoned theater named El Orfeo, built over a colonial water reservoir. The same tunnels connected to St. Aurelia and the foundation headquarters. Mateo assembled a plan to enter without the girls, using recorded vocal samples and a biometric emulator.
Sofia overheard.
"It won't work," she said.
"Why?"
"The song knows when we're scared."
Elena explained that voice authentication could measure stress, breath, and microvariation. A recording might fail.
Mateo refused to bring them. "No archive is worth their safety."
Sofia looked at him with Valeria's stubbornness. "Mommy said the bad people win when grown-ups decide children are too little to tell the truth."
Mateo knelt. "And fathers fail when they make children carry battles meant for adults."
The argument ended when an unmarked package arrived at the gate. Inside was one of Camila's pearl earrings and a photograph of Adriana standing beside the shadowless basin. A timestamp showed it had been taken ten minutes earlier.
Adriana had returned to St. Aurelia.
Mateo, Rafael, and a tactical team reached the academy before midnight. The chapel had been restored with temporary lights. Water filled the stone basin. Adriana stood alone, holding the trust seal.
"Where is Orpheus?" Mateo asked.
"Everywhere you brought a camera," she said. "Everywhere your officers brought radios."
She dropped the seal into the basin.
The water glowed blue.
Sofia and Lucia's voices played from hidden speakers, singing the lullaby. Mateo's childhood neural record streamed from a device beside the altar. Orpheus had assembled substitutes for all three keys.
The stone floor opened.
Adriana looked shocked. "It should have rejected the recordings."
"Unless they were not recordings," Rafael said.
Mateo heard Sofia cough through the speakers.
His blood turned cold.
The girls were supposed to be in the mansion safe room with Elena and Isabel. He called. No answer.
A live feed appeared on the chapel wall. Sofia and Lucia sat in the nursery replica beneath the foundation headquarters. Elena lay unconscious nearby.
Camila stood behind the girls with a pistol.
"I escaped," she said through the feed. "Orpheus did not take me. Adriana did."
Adriana lowered her head.
Camila continued, "My sister and I made a new agreement. We open the registry, expose Hector's network, and end it. But first, Mateo, you must step into the chamber."
"You kidnapped them again."
"I rescued them from Orpheus's people. The gun is for whoever comes through the door."
Sofia looked into the camera.
"Daddy," she said, "Aunt Camila is lying with her left hand."
Camila's left hand was hidden behind her back.
At St. Aurelia, Adriana admitted that she had taken the seal weeks before Mateo found her. She feared investigators would deliver it to the family council, where Orpheus had allies. Her escape from the hospital had been arranged through an old network of survivors, not Camila, but one survivor had betrayed the route. Camila captured her near the station and proposed the temporary alliance. Adriana accepted because Camila claimed Gabriel was alive. Mateo asked whether she would have sacrificed Sofia and Lucia to expose Hector. Adriana did not answer immediately. At last she said suffering can make justice resemble vengeance until the person holding it no longer sees children standing in the way. She had come dangerously close. Sofia's voice over the speakers had reminded her that the registry existed to serve lives, not the reverse. Mateo believed remorse mattered only if followed by surrender, so Adriana agreed to remain under guard.

When she raised it, she held a small black transmitter.
A countdown began at thirty seconds.
