Chapter 8 - Student 001

Marcus Reed had never told Andrew he had a brother.

They met in Ortiz's office, where rain streaked the windows and the red notebooks lay sealed in clear evidence bags. Marcus listened without interruption as Andrew repeated Sophia's words.

Then he removed his wedding ring, turned it around his finger, and said, "His name was Daniel."

Daniel Reed had been eight years old when he died.

The official story was drowning. During a summer enrichment retreat, Daniel wandered away from a supervised group and fell into a reservoir. His body was recovered two days later.

Marcus was twelve.

"My parents never recovered," he said. "My mother blamed herself. My father blamed the school. Then records vanished, staff changed their stories, and a private investigator told us to stop asking questions."

"What school?" Ortiz asked.

"The Vale Institute for Exceptional Youth. It closed in 1998."

Ortiz searched the name. No active corporate record appeared, but archived newspaper clippings described an elite program funded by philanthropist Adrian Vale.

Andrew leaned toward the screen.

A photograph showed Adrian Vale cutting a ribbon outside a brick school building. Beside him stood a younger Elaine Hart, then a teaching assistant.

Principal Hart had not merely known the program.

She had worked there.

Ortiz brought her in immediately.

Hart sat beneath fluorescent lights, hands folded so tightly her knuckles whitened. When shown the photograph, she stopped denying the past.

"Adrian Vale believed academic behavior could predict adult obedience," she said. "He collected children from powerful families and subjected them to controlled stress. At first it was presented as resilience research. Then punishments began. Isolation. Food restriction. Humiliation."

"Daniel Reed?" Marcus asked.

Hart looked at him and began to cry.

"Daniel did not drown."

Marcus stood so suddenly his chair struck the wall.

"Where is he?"

"I don't know."

"You just said he didn't drown."

"He escaped during a night exercise. Vale's people found him near the reservoir. The next morning they announced his death and showed staff a covered body. Years later, I received a letter in Daniel's handwriting."

Marcus stared at her.

"What did it say?"

"That he was alive. That he had learned how to survive by becoming useful."

Hart opened her handbag and removed an old envelope protected in plastic. The letter inside contained only three sentences.

MARCUS MUST BELIEVE I AM DEAD.

THEY WATCH GRIEF MORE CLOSELY THAN LOVE.

ONE DAY I WILL CLOSE THE SCHOOL FROM INSIDE.

At the bottom was a symbol: a narrow valley beneath a silver star.

"Why didn't you tell my family?" Marcus demanded.

"The letter arrived with photographs of your parents sleeping. I was a coward."

Ortiz asked about Brookfield's basement.

Hart admitted that when she became principal, a donor offered millions to renovate the school. The donor's foundation used shell companies. Hart suspected a connection to Vale but convinced herself she could monitor it from within.

"You let them rebuild the program around children," Andrew said.

"I thought I could protect them by staying close."

"You protected your position."

Hart bowed her head.

The school board suspended her that afternoon. Prosecutors considered charges.

Meanwhile, forensic analysts traced the silver stars. Each contained a near-field communication chip. When scanned with the correct device, the chips opened hidden directories on the Vale server.

Valerie's star, 317, unlocked a file labeled MERCER SUCCESSION.

The file contained contingency plans for Andrew's death.

Sophia would become Valerie's legal guardian.

Victor Hale would take temporary control of Mercer Systems.

Northstar would complete the acquisition within seventy-two hours.

Attached was a draft accident report describing Andrew's fatal car crash on a mountain road.

The date was next Friday.

Marcus read the document twice.

"They planned all of it."

Andrew looked at him.

"Including the merger vote."

Marcus nodded slowly.

May you like

Then Ortiz's analyst opened the metadata.

The document had been created on a computer registered to Marcus Reed.
