THE NIGHT HE CAME HOME EARLY / Chapter 7 / 16

Chapter 7 - Cedar House

Cedar House stood eighty miles north of the city on forty acres of pine forest. It had once hosted employee retreats, leadership workshops, and summer camps for staff families. After a mold problem, the foundation announced that the property had been closed for renovation.

That was eighteen months ago.

Satellite images showed recent vehicle tracks.

Ortiz secured a warrant and assembled a tactical team. Andrew was ordered to remain behind. He agreed only after she promised to call the moment the property was safe.

Waiting became its own form of violence.

He sat in the protected hotel room while Valerie slept beside a lamp she insisted remain on. Dr. Price had explained that recovery would not begin with forgetting. It would begin when Valerie could predict what happened next.

Breakfast at eight.

Medicine after breakfast.

No school until she chose.

No locked doors.

No punishments for tears.

Andrew wrote the schedule in green marker because Valerie said red belonged to the charts.

At 3:17 a.m., Ortiz called.

"We found Maya."

Andrew closed his eyes.

"Alive?"

"Alive. Dehydrated, sedated, frightened, but alive."

He sat down before his knees failed.

"Her parents?"

"Not there. We found four children total. Two were reported missing. The others had parents who believed they were attending an overseas academic camp."

"Who was guarding them?"

"Two contractors. Both arrested. No sign of Hale or the man in gray gloves."

Cedar House contained classrooms, sleeping quarters, a medical room, and a communications center. On one wall hung photographs of more than sixty children arranged beneath corporate logos and government agencies.

Mercer Systems appeared near the center.

The children were not selected for intelligence alone. They were selected for proximity.

Maya was taken to St. Anne's. She asked for Valerie before speaking to police.

The reunion took place through a glass partition because both girls were medically fragile. Valerie pressed her palm to the glass. Maya lifted hers to meet it.

"You gave it to him," Maya whispered.

"He came home early," Valerie said.

For the first time, Maya smiled.

Grace and Ethan Lin were found later that day in separate locations. Grace had been held in a private psychiatric facility under a false name after forged messages suggested she was suicidal. Ethan had been arrested abroad on fabricated financial charges arranged through intermediaries.

The network did not merely steal secrets. It could manufacture reality.

Sophia was charged with child abuse, conspiracy, unlawful surveillance, and aiding attempted corporate theft. Her attorney announced she had been manipulated by unknown superiors.

Andrew attended the preliminary hearing.

Sophia entered in a gray jail uniform, no makeup, her hair tied back. She looked smaller than she had in his home, but he no longer confused fragility with innocence.

When she saw him, she smiled.

During a recess, her attorney approached.

"Ms. Bell is willing to provide information in exchange for protective custody and consideration at sentencing. She will speak only to Mr. Mercer."

Ortiz objected. The prosecutor objected. Andrew agreed.

They met in a secure interview room separated by a metal table. Cameras recorded every angle.

Sophia studied Andrew for a long moment.

"How is Valerie?"

"You do not get to ask that."

"I cared for her."

"You hit her. Starved her. Took her to a basement."

"I kept her alive."

Andrew's hand tightened beneath the table.

Sophia leaned forward. "Children who failed too often disappeared. You saw Cedar House. You think that was the worst place? It was storage."

"Who is Vale?"

"Not a person. A title."

"For whom?"

"The one who evaluates the families."

"Victor Hale?"

Sophia laughed. "Victor is a banker with delusions. Vale owns him."

She glanced toward the mirrored observation window.

"There are people in your company who have served this program for years. The merger is not about buying your software. It is about placing the Vale system inside every hospital network that uses it."

"What system?"

"Prediction. Compliance. Pressure points. Children were the training data."

Andrew felt sick.

Sophia lowered her voice.

"You want the man in gray gloves? Find the first student. Number 001."

"Who is that?"

Her expression changed.

May you like

For the first time, something like pity entered it.

"Ask Marcus what happened to his little brother."
