Chapter 10 - The Man in Gray Gloves

The captured abductor regained consciousness under guard and gave his name as Owen Pike. He had worked as a private transport contractor for hospitals, schools, and juvenile facilities. He denied knowing Daniel Reed.
His phone told a different story.
Deleted location data placed him at the hydroelectric station thirty-seven times. Messages instructed him to move students, parents, and compromised staff. The sender used only a symbol: the valley and star.
One message, received minutes before the attempted abduction, read:
317 HAS BROKEN CONDITIONING. RECOVER BEFORE PATTERN SPREADS.
Valerie's resistance frightened them.
That realization changed her in Andrew's eyes. He had thought of her only as someone he failed to protect. Now he saw what she had done inside a system built to erase choice. She had hidden Maya's card. Memorized safe details. Tested the false doctor with a password. Fought back when escape opened.
Survival had not made the abuse acceptable. But the courage was hers.
At the hydroelectric station, investigators found gray gloves in a locked office. DNA inside them matched Daniel Reed through samples from Marcus.
Marcus sat alone when Ortiz told him.
"He's alive," he said.
"The evidence strongly suggests it."
"And he may be Vale."
"Or he may have used the title to infiltrate the network."
Andrew remembered the letter: One day I will close the school from inside.
Hope could be another weapon. They treated it carefully.
The station's central computer contained a scheduled broadcast. At noon, every Vale-linked device received a live video.
A tall man sat in shadow. Gray gloves covered his hands. His face remained hidden.
"The Brookfield branch is terminated," he said. "Domestic supervisors who exceeded protocol will not be protected. Assets exposed through carelessness are abandoned."
Sophia watched the broadcast from jail. Victor Hale, wherever he was, presumably watched too.
The man continued.
"Mercer Systems is no longer viable for acquisition. Initiate division."
Across the country, Vale operations began moving money, destroying records, and abandoning facilities. Federal agents raided seven locations within hours. Three children were recovered. Two judges resigned. A hospital administrator killed himself before arrest. Northstar's stock collapsed when investigators entered its headquarters.
The broadcast ended with a final sentence.
"Student 317, you have earned a choice."
Valerie's silver star activated on the evidence table.
A map appeared on the connected screen.
One location blinked red: the reservoir.
Beneath it was a time.
6:00 p.m.
Ortiz believed it was a trap. Andrew believed that too.
He also believed the man expected him to come.
At the reservoir, police established hidden positions around the abandoned boathouse. Marcus waited in an armored vehicle. Andrew wore a wire and walked alone to the dock.
At exactly six, a boat emerged from the mist.
The man steering it wore gray gloves.
He tied the boat and stepped onto the dock. He was in his late thirties, lean, with a pale scar running from his right temple to his jaw.
Marcus saw him through the vehicle camera and stopped breathing.
"Daniel."
The man looked directly toward the hidden vehicle.
"Hello, Marcus."
Ortiz's team raised weapons.
Daniel lifted both hands.
"I did not come to surrender," he said. "I came to offer Andrew Mercer the evidence that can destroy Vale permanently."
"You are Vale," Andrew said.
"I wear the name because the name opens doors. Adrian Vale died nine years ago. His students continued the system. Victor Hale believes he controls it. Northstar believes it owns it. Neither understands what it became."
"Did you order Valerie's abduction?"
Daniel's expression tightened. "No. I sent the warning that allowed her to recognize the intruder."
"You broadcast her student number."
"Because every active handler needed to know she was untouchable."
"She was never untouchable."
Daniel accepted the accusation.
He removed one glove and held out a small black drive.
"This contains names, accounts, locations, and thirty years of recordings. But it is locked to a biometric key taken from Adrian Vale's first successful subject."
Marcus stepped from the vehicle despite Ortiz's shout.
Daniel looked at his brother.
"You should have stayed inside."
Marcus walked closer, tears on his face. "Were you trying to close it?"
Daniel's eyes filled, but his voice remained controlled.
"Every year."
A shot cracked across the water.
Daniel jerked backward.
Blood spread across his coat.
Police returned fire toward the tree line. Andrew caught Daniel before he struck the dock.
Daniel pushed the black drive into his hand.
"The first subject," he gasped. "Not me."
"Who?"
Daniel looked past Andrew toward Marcus.

"Your mother lied about which son entered the program first."
Then the boathouse exploded.
