THE NIGHT HE CAME HOME EARLY / Chapter 2 / 16

Chapter 2 - The Second Notebook

Principal Elaine Hart had always seemed composed at school functions. She wore navy suits, spoke in measured sentences, and remembered the names of children whose parents donated nothing. That night, standing under Andrew's porch light, she looked ten years older.

Detective Ortiz showed her badge before Andrew could ask why they were there.

"May we come inside?"

Andrew glanced back at Valerie. The child had stopped crying, but her face had gone blank in the way children sometimes disappeared while remaining physically present.

"Yes," he said. "But Sophia stays away from my daughter."

Ortiz's eyes sharpened at the name.

"Is Sophia Bell inside?"

"She's my fiancee. She lives here."

Principal Hart closed her eyes briefly.

That reaction frightened Andrew more than the badge.

They entered the living room. Sophia descended the staircase with deliberate calm, one hand sliding along the banister. By then she had fixed her hair and changed her expression.

"Detective," she said. "I assume this is about the school misunderstanding."

Ortiz did not answer her. She looked at Valerie.

"Would you feel safer sitting with your father in the kitchen?"

Valerie nodded.

Sophia stepped forward. "She should be in bed. She has an exam tomorrow."

Andrew moved between them.

"She is not going anywhere with you."

For a second, hatred flashed across Sophia's face. Then it vanished beneath a wounded smile.

"Andrew, you're upset."

"Correct."

He took Valerie into the kitchen and wrapped her in the soft gray blanket from the couch. Principal Hart placed the red notebook on the table but kept her hand on it.

"This was found in a locked cabinet in the academic enrichment office," she said. "A teacher discovered it this afternoon after hearing a student crying behind the wall."

"Behind the wall?"

Hart swallowed. "There is a small observation room connected to the testing suite. It was built years ago for language assessments. I did not know it was still being used."

Detective Ortiz opened the notebook.

Its pages contained charts nearly identical to Sophia's punishment record. Student initials. Scores. Infractions. Corrective actions.

V.M. appeared on dozens of pages.

Andrew recognized the pattern at once.

"Valerie Mercer."

Hart nodded.

"There are other children too."

Sophia remained in the doorway. "This is absurd. Those initials could mean anything."

Ortiz turned several pages. "Your name appears here as External Compliance Coordinator."

"I volunteered for tutoring."

"At midnight?"

Sophia's lips parted.

Ortiz placed a printed access log beside the notebook. "Your security code opened the testing wing fourteen times between eleven p.m. and two a.m. over the last six months."

Andrew stared at Sophia.

He remembered evenings when she claimed to be visiting her mother. Weekend conferences. Charity meetings. He remembered Valerie sleeping late on Saturdays and Sophia explaining that gifted children needed extra rest.

"You took her to school at night?"

Sophia looked directly at Valerie. "Tell him why."

The child shrank beneath the blanket.

"Do not speak to her," Andrew said.

Ortiz closed the notebook. "Ms. Bell, I need you to remain here while we clarify several matters."

"Am I under arrest?"

"Not yet."

A patrol officer appeared behind the detective.

Sophia laughed once, softly. "You people think this is about bruises and grades. You have no idea what Hart has been allowing in that school."

Principal Hart went pale.

"What does that mean?" Andrew asked.

Sophia pointed toward the red notebook.

"Ask her who funded the observation room. Ask her why every child in that book has a parent with access to something valuable."

Andrew looked at Hart.

The principal's fingers trembled on the tabletop.

Before she could answer, Valerie spoke from beneath the blanket.

"The Quiet Teacher said Daddy would lose his company if I got a B."

Andrew knelt beside her.

"Who is the Quiet Teacher?"

Valerie looked past him toward the dark window.

"The man behind the glass."

Detective Ortiz and Principal Hart exchanged a look.

"What glass?" Andrew asked.

May you like

Valerie raised one shaking finger and pointed at the red notebook.

"He watched us from the room where the mirror isn't a mirror."
