Chapter 9 - The Lake House Bargain
Valerie refused to meet Diego alone.
This time, he accepted her conditions. He instructed her to bring Claire to an abandoned ranger station two miles from the Cross estate. Federal agents established surveillance, but a snowstorm reduced visibility and disrupted aerial support.
Diego emerged from the trees wearing a heavy coat and carrying no weapon. His face was bruised. A bandage wrapped his left hand.
Claire stepped forward. "Where is my father?"
"Inside the estate," Diego said. "He thinks I still have the ledger."
"Why hasn't he killed you?" Valerie asked.
"Because I told him the real ledger is rigged to release online if I die."
"Is it?"
"No."
For the first time, Valerie saw how fear had stripped Diego of arrogance. He looked like a man discovering that power borrowed from crueler people always came due.
He offered to wear a transmitter and draw Cross into confessing. In exchange, he wanted federal protection and consideration at sentencing.
Valerie did not control either.
"Then why ask me?"
"Because they will believe you if you say I helped."
"They will believe recordings, documents, and witnesses. Not my mercy."
Diego flinched.
He apologized for the plate.
Valerie looked at him for a long moment. "You are sorry that it exposed you."
He had no answer.
The operation began before dawn. Diego entered the estate through a service tunnel leading from an old boathouse. Claire guided agents to a maintenance road while Valerie remained in the mobile command vehicle with Blake.
Through Diego's transmitter, they heard Cross greet him calmly.
"You always were Victoria's blunt instrument."
Diego demanded safe passage in return for the ledger. Cross laughed and admitted that the ledger no longer mattered. The families named in it had been compromised, discredited, or bought. What mattered was the master file connecting those operations to him.
Diego asked about Thomas Bell.
Cross said Thomas had mistaken knowledge for protection.
"Did you order Mercer to push him?"
Silence.
Then Cross said, "I ordered a problem resolved. Mercer selected the method."
Blake signaled the agents.
They moved toward the house.
The transmitter erupted with shouting. Diego accused Cross of destroying his family. Cross replied that Victoria had done that willingly.
A gunshot sounded.
The feed went dead.
Agents breached the estate. Valerie watched body-camera images flicker across monitors: marble hallways, empty bedrooms, overturned furniture. They found Diego in the library, bleeding from his shoulder but alive.
Julian Cross had escaped through a hidden elevator.
Claire knew nothing about it.
The elevator descended to a tunnel beneath the lake shore. At the far end, agents found an empty snowmobile and tracks leading onto the frozen lake.
The storm erased them within minutes.
In the library safe, agents recovered the physical server. Claire opened it using her access credentials, but the master file was encrypted with a second biometric key.
Cross's fingerprint was required.
Diego had taken something during the confrontation: a whiskey glass Cross had used. Technicians lifted a partial print, enough to open one directory.
Inside were videos.
Thomas's murder.
Edward's boat sabotage.
Blackridge operatives threatening elderly beneficiaries.
Diego arranging the false signing session.
Victoria instructing Morales to retrieve Valerie's blouse from evidence.
And one recording made in the Carter mansion three days before the dinner.
Victoria and Diego stood in the library arguing.
Victoria said, "If Valerie refuses the deed, make her afraid enough to sign. But do not leave marks. The amendment activates if she proves abuse."
Diego replied, "I know how to control my wife."
Valerie watched without speaking.
There was no misunderstanding left to preserve.
The server also contained a folder labeled Fourth Beneficiary. Inside was Valerie's birth certificate, the DNA analysis, and a legal opinion confirming that she was Michael Calder's only child.
She held a direct forty percent beneficial interest in the trust.
Natalie and Diego each held twenty percent. The remaining twenty belonged to a charitable foundation.
Victoria had no beneficial interest at all.
Every crime she committed to protect her claim had been committed for wealth she never owned.
The revelation should have ended her power.
Instead, Victoria's attorney filed an emergency petition claiming Valerie was the product of fraud and therefore disqualified. The petition included a sworn affidavit from Helen stating that Michael Calder was not Valerie's father.
Helen denied signing it.
The signature appeared perfect.

And this time, it had been notarized that morning inside the federal safe house.
