Chapter 8 - The Sister With Two Fathers

Claire's claim sounded impossible until she explained it.

Her mother had been married to Julian Cross, but Thomas Bell was her biological father. Cross knew and raised Claire anyway, not from generosity but because her existence gave him leverage over Thomas. Years later, Thomas learned that Helen had conceived Valerie during a brief separation, after a relationship with Edward Carter's younger half brother, Michael Calder.

Michael died before Valerie was born.

Thomas married Helen, gave Valerie his name, and protected the secret.

Claire handed over DNA reports linking Valerie to preserved samples from Michael Calder's military records. The probability of a parent-child relationship exceeded 99.9 percent.

"How did you get my DNA?" Valerie asked.

Claire looked ashamed. "A glass from a fundraiser. Blackridge collected samples from anyone who might challenge the trust."

Blake wanted Claire taken into custody, but she offered immediate cooperation. She had served as Blackridge's compliance director for eleven years. She knew which shell companies held stolen assets and which judges, notaries, and investigators had been bribed.

"Why betray Cross now?" Miriam asked.

"Because he ordered the attack on Thomas. Because he ordered Mercer to kill Edward. And because yesterday he told me Valerie would not survive the week."

Claire's evidence filled three encrypted drives. But the most important file required biometric access from Julian Cross himself.

It contained the master list of beneficiary targets.

Valerie's name was marked priority red.

Diego's name was marked expendable.

Victoria's was marked controlled asset.

Claire explained that Victoria had entered Blackridge's system believing she could use it to preserve the Carter fortune. Over time, she became trapped by loans and crimes Cross could expose. She was guilty, but she was not the architect.

"And Diego?" Valerie asked.

"He helped forge documents. He recruited the body double. He authorized surveillance. But after the dinner, he tried to trade the ledger for immunity. Cross decided to eliminate him."

The distinction did not absolve Diego. It only revealed how many predators could exist in the same chain.

Federal agents prepared coordinated raids. Before they could act, Blackridge's Boston office burned.

The fire began in the records room and spread through three floors. Sprinklers failed. A night guard died from smoke inhalation. Claire watched the news with horror.

"The drives prove the shell companies," she said, "but the master file proves the murders. Without it, Cross will say rogue employees committed fraud."

Julian Cross left the country on a private aircraft before authorities froze his travel clearance. Flight data suggested the plane landed in Nova Scotia, but surveillance lost him near a marina.

Valerie's divorce hearing proceeded amid the chaos. Diego remained missing. His attorney requested delay, claiming he feared for his life. The judge granted Valerie exclusive possession of Harbor Point and barred any transfer of Carter assets.

Then a courier delivered a package to the courthouse.

Inside was the cream silk blouse Valerie had worn during the assault.

It had been removed at the hospital and sealed as evidence.

Now it was folded neatly, blood still dark on the collar.

Pinned to it was a note.

The first blood was his warning. The next will be yours.

Blake launched an internal investigation into the evidence breach. Only six people had access to the blouse. One was Officer Morales, the patrol officer who had responded to the mansion.

Morales disappeared before he could be questioned.

The corruption reached inside the case.

Valerie was moved to a secure apartment with Natalie, Helen, and Claire under federal protection. The arrangement was tense. Helen mistrusted Claire. Natalie distrusted Edward. Claire distrusted everyone.

Valerie trusted evidence.

Late one night, she studied the digital copy of the ledger and noticed a recurring number beside several fraudulent loans: 11-7-24.

It looked like a date, but the entries spanned twenty years.

Claire recognized it as an internal access sequence. The master file was not stored on Blackridge's network. It was held in a physical server at Cross's private estate in Vermont.

The estate stood beside Lake Calder.

Edward knew the property.

It had once belonged to Eleanor Calder Carter.

More importantly, Diego knew how to enter it.

At 3:14 a.m., Valerie received another message from him.

I can give you Cross. Come before Victoria gets out.

Attached was a live photograph of Julian Cross seated beside a fireplace.

Behind him, through tall windows, snow fell over Lake Calder.
