Chapter 11 - The Gala of Hostages

The ballroom erupted in panic.
Guests rushed toward sealed exits. Federal agents drew weapons, but the mansion's security system had been replaced by Northstar contractors years earlier. Steel panels covered the doors. White noise flooded communications.
On the screen, Diego struggled against plastic restraints. Blood marked his collar. Natalie sat rigidly beside him, her face bruised but alert.
Cross stepped onto the staircase landing.
"No one needs to die," he said. "Valerie will sign a beneficiary release, Victoria will confirm the Blackridge loans, and the Carter family will retain enough to live comfortably."
Valerie looked toward Victoria.
The older woman's shock appeared genuine.
"You promised they would be protected," Victoria whispered.
Cross smiled. "You have always confused usefulness with protection."
Victoria's perfect posture broke. For the first time, she saw herself as Cross had always seen her: replaceable.
Valerie demanded proof that Natalie was alive. Natalie responded by reciting the name of the childhood dog she had never told reporters about. Her voice remained steady.
"Do not sign anything," she added.
Cross muted the feed.
He ordered Valerie to the library, where documents waited. Two armed Northstar operatives moved from the shadows. Blake could not fire without risking dozens of guests.
Valerie walked willingly.
In the library, the same table that had held forged deeds now held a beneficiary release, a confession, and authorization for offshore transfers. Cross placed a pen before her.
"Your father believed truth had moral force," he said. "It does not. Truth is only valuable when someone has the power to enforce it."
"Then why are you afraid of my signature?"
His expression hardened.
Valerie delayed by reading every page. Cross grew impatient. Behind him, Victoria entered under guard.
"Tell her to sign," Cross ordered.
Victoria looked at Valerie's scar.
"I spent my life preserving a name that never protected me," she said quietly. "I will not beg you to preserve it now."
Cross struck Victoria across the face.
The sound echoed through the library.
Valerie did not look away.
"That is what your empire is," she said. "A room where everyone eventually becomes the victim."
Cross reached for the pen and forced it into her hand.
At that moment, the mansion fire alarm activated.
Sprinklers burst overhead. Water drenched the documents. Emergency shutters lifted automatically under fire code. Federal teams breached the doors.
Samuel Price had triggered the alarm from the basement.
Chaos followed. Northstar operatives exchanged gunfire with agents in the service hall. Guests crawled beneath tables. Blake tackled Cross near the staircase, but Cross produced a concealed blade and escaped through the hidden library passage.
Victoria grabbed Valerie's arm.
"The passage leads to the old carriage tunnel."
They ran after him with agents close behind.
In the tunnel, Cross reached a waiting vehicle. Edward stepped from behind a stone pillar and blocked the path.
The two men faced one another for the first time in nine years.
Cross raised a gun.
Edward did not.
"You took my life," Edward said.
"You surrendered it."
A shot rang out.
Victoria moved between them.
The bullet struck her below the shoulder.
Agents opened fire, hitting Cross in the leg. He fell beside the vehicle and was arrested. Victoria collapsed into Valerie's arms.
"Why?" Valerie asked.
Victoria struggled to breathe. "Because I already let one husband die."
Paramedics carried her out alive but critical.
Cross refused to reveal the hostages' location. The screen feed had been routed through multiple servers. Diego and Natalie could be anywhere within two hundred miles.
Then Valerie remembered the train schedule found beneath Diego's floorboard. One departure had been circled: the old coastal line to Rockport, no longer used for passenger service.
Edward knew of a Northstar training site beside the abandoned tracks.
Agents arrived at the site forty minutes later.
They found Diego's chair empty, restraints cut from the inside.
Natalie was gone.

On the floor lay a phone playing a recorded message from Diego.
"I am sorry, Valerie. I could not let Cross tell you everything."
