Chapter 10 - The Traitor Behind the Locked Door

Only nine people knew the location of the safe house.
Blake locked down the building and separated everyone for questioning. The notary seal on Helen's false affidavit belonged to Miriam Shaw's junior associate, Evan Pike, who had visited two days earlier with divorce filings.
Pike was found in his apartment, unconscious from an overdose. Paramedics saved him. When he woke, he admitted that Northstar had blackmailed him with gambling debts and photographs of illegal activity. He had provided document templates and access codes but insisted he had never entered the safe house after the first visit.
The affidavit was created from data already stolen.
The true breach was more dangerous.
A transmitter was discovered inside Natalie's suitcase.
She swore she knew nothing about it. Edward believed her. Claire did not.
Tension erupted. Natalie accused Claire of leading Cross to them. Claire accused Edward of preserving secrets until they became weapons. Helen confessed that she had met Michael Calder twice after Valerie's birth and accepted money to remain silent, a choice she had hidden from Thomas.
Valerie listened until every voice became noise.
Then she placed the bloodstained deed on the table.
It had been returned after forensic testing. A small brown stain marked one corner, her blood from the dining room.
"This is what they want us to do," she said. "Fight over shame while they move the assets. Every secret becomes a rope they pull. We stop helping them."
She demanded complete disclosure from everyone.
Edward admitted Samuel Price, the investigator who rescued him, was still alive and working inside Northstar under another name. Claire admitted she had warned Cross about a federal inquiry years earlier, believing she could protect employees. Helen admitted Thomas had maintained a second family trust account for Claire.
Natalie admitted she had met Diego secretly after his first message.
She had given him cash and a car.
"I thought he was trying to escape Mother," she said. "I did not know he would go to Harbor Point."
Her guilt was real, but so was the damage.
Blake removed her from the protected location and placed her under supervised release as a cooperating witness.
The family fractured, but the truth became cleaner.
Samuel Price contacted Edward through an emergency channel. He claimed Cross had returned to Boston and was preparing to liquidate Blackridge's remaining assets through an offshore exchange. The transfer would occur during a private charity gala at the Carter mansion, which Victoria still controlled through a temporary court order.
The gala was scheduled for the tenth anniversary of Edward's supposed death.
Victoria had arranged release on home confinement after providing evidence against several Blackridge employees. Prosecutor Kim suspected the gala was cover for a final transaction.
Valerie proposed attending.
Blake opposed it. Kim called it reckless. Miriam said no court would require Valerie to place herself in danger.
"They are using my house, my trust, my identity, and my blood," Valerie replied. "I am done waiting in rooms chosen by other people."
The plan relied on the trust's governance clause. As a newly verified direct beneficiary, Valerie could demand an emergency accounting in the presence of trustees and creditors. The gala guest list included Blackridge lenders, shell-company directors, and public officials. If she served the demand during the transaction, anyone who continued moving funds could be charged with knowingly violating a preservation order.
It was not merely a trap.
It was an audience.
On the night of the gala, Valerie entered the Carter mansion wearing a simple black gown. The scar near her temple remained visible. She refused makeup over it.
Conversations stopped as she crossed the foyer.
Victoria stood beneath the chandelier in silver silk, an electronic monitor hidden beneath her hem. She smiled as though welcoming an inconvenient guest.
"You always did enjoy drama."
Valerie handed her a sealed notice. "You taught me the value of witnesses."
At nine o'clock, Julian Cross arrived through the front doors.
He wore a tuxedo and no disguise.
Reporters gasped. Cameras turned. Cross lifted a glass of champagne and said he had returned voluntarily to clear his name.
Blake's agents moved closer.
Then every light in the mansion went out.
Emergency shutters sealed the windows. Cell signals vanished. The front doors locked.
Cross's voice sounded through the ballroom speakers.
"Now that the beneficiaries are together, we can settle the trust permanently."
A screen illuminated above the staircase.

Diego appeared live, bound to a chair in an unknown room.
Beside him sat Natalie.
