Chapter 9 - Evelyn Hart’s Final Bargain
Evelyn refused to accept that she had lost.
From the interview room, she offered Lena a private settlement.
She promised twenty million dollars, the Hart family’s coastal home, and a public apology if Lena withdrew her assault complaint and refused to cooperate with federal investigators.
Lena agreed to meet her once.
Evelyn sat behind a glass partition in a plain detention uniform. Without diamonds, stylists, or loyal guests surrounding her, she appeared tired rather than powerful.
“You could walk away wealthy,” Evelyn said.
“I already own part of the resort.”
“Shares are not money. I am offering freedom.”
“You kept my mother from me.”
“Your mother endangered everyone.”
“She exposed you.”
Evelyn’s mouth tightened.
“My husband made mistakes. Families survive by containing damage.”
“You mean hiding crimes.”
“I mean protecting what belongs to us.”
Lena leaned closer to the glass.
“That is the difference between you and my mother. You destroyed people to protect your family. She gave up her family to protect people.”
Evelyn’s expression finally broke.
“You think the employees will thank you? They will take your money and forget your name.”
“I don’t need them to remember me.”
Lena placed the unsigned settlement agreement against the glass.
“I only need them to remember what you did.”
She tore it in half.
In the months that followed, Evelyn was charged with assault, obstruction, conspiracy, and destruction of evidence. Daniel faced fraud charges, conspiracy charges, and attempted coercion related to the marital documents.
Several former Hart executives agreed to testify.
The stolen retirement funds were traced through offshore accounts and recovered.
For the first time in decades, the Aurelia Grand no longer belonged to the Hart family.
