Chapter 5 - The Gift That Required a Husband

Rafael led Lena and Detective Brooks into the resort’s private records room.

Behind a row of old accounting books was a steel box secured inside the wall. Rafael entered a code Miriam had given him twelve years earlier.

The box contained one envelope.

On the front was Lena’s full name.

Inside was a letter from her mother and a copy of a trust agreement.

My dearest Lena,

If you are reading this, the Hart family has finally brought you to the Aurelia Grand.

They may tell you that they love you. They may offer you protection, luxury, and a future. Do not believe them until you understand what they need from you.

Lena’s hands began to shake.

The trust agreement revealed that Miriam had legally purchased thirty-eight percent of the resort using money recovered before Victor Hart could steal it.

She placed the shares in Lena’s name.

However, the shares could not be transferred, sold, or controlled by another person until Lena reached thirty-one. There was one exception.

A legal spouse could gain temporary financial authority if Lena signed a specific marital asset agreement.

Lena remembered the documents Daniel had placed in her bridal suite that afternoon.

He had called them routine estate-planning forms.

She had nearly signed them.

Rafael turned to Detective Brooks.

“Once Daniel controlled her shares, the Hart family would own a majority of the resort.”

Lena continued reading her mother’s letter.

The locket opens the second box. Rafael knows where it is. Inside, you will find the records that can return everything they stole.

Lena looked down at the locket.

The decorative edge was not merely decoration. It concealed a tiny metal key.

Rafael brought them to the old wine cellar beneath the ballroom. Behind a loose stone, they found a second steel case.

The locket key fit perfectly.

Inside were account ledgers, signed instructions from Victor Hart, photographs of forged documents, and audio recordings stored on several memory cards.

There was also a sealed envelope addressed to federal investigators.

Daniel had not married Lena for love.

He had married the only person who could destroy his family.
