Chapter 3 - The Name Rafael Remembered

Rafael Ortega had worked at the Aurelia Grand for thirty-four years.
He remembered every important guest, every family scandal, and every secret agreement made in the private conference rooms.
He also remembered Miriam Vale.
Twelve years earlier, Miriam had arrived at the resort as an independent financial investigator. The property’s original owner had hired her after millions of dollars disappeared from employee retirement accounts.
Within three weeks, Miriam discovered that the missing funds had been moved through companies controlled by Victor Hart, Evelyn’s late husband.
Rafael had been the assistant manager then. Miriam came to him because she needed access to archived guest records and security logs.
“She wasn’t afraid for herself,” Rafael later told Lena. “She was afraid for you.”
Miriam had found more than financial theft. She discovered that Victor and Evelyn were preparing to seize control of the entire resort through forged debt agreements.
Daniel, only twenty-five at the time, had already begun working for his father.
He had attended the secret meetings.
The night Miriam planned to deliver the evidence to federal investigators, she came to the resort carrying a leather folder and the silver locket.
“She said someone had followed her,” Rafael explained. “She asked me to hide the original documents.”
“What happened to her?” Lena asked.
Rafael looked toward the police officers questioning Daniel across the lobby.
“She disappeared before sunrise.”
Lena felt the old wound open inside her.
“Then she really left me.”
“No.”
Rafael’s answer was immediate.
“She left because Daniel’s father threatened you.”
Rafael explained that Miriam had arranged for Caroline to keep Lena away from their house that night. Then she placed the evidence somewhere Victor Hart could not legally access.
Before leaving, she gave Rafael a message.
When Lena comes here with the locket, tell her the truth.
Rafael had waited twelve years.
Then Daniel brought Lena to the resort as his bride.
“That cannot be a coincidence,” Rafael said.
Lena turned toward her husband.

Daniel was no longer pretending to be concerned.
He was watching the locket in her hand.
